New York Toy Fair Halo Review: Mega Bloks Gausshog and Banshee

Next up in my continuing coverage of Halo Mega Bloks are mid sized vehicles/ships. We have a new Gausshog and Banshee coming! Seems I was misled about the Banshee not being called that, or perhaps there will be a name change and it just couldn’t be said. Regardless, for now, since it looks like a Banshee, that’s what I’m calling it until we know differently. Keep reading to learn more about both sets and see the features they have.

This Gausshog is electronic like last year’s was, but that doesn’t make it any less appealing, in my opinion. Instead we get a hog very similar to the Halo Fest exclusive Warthog from 2010, with the black and yellow theme. That one was the standard chain gun turret hog. As with that one, we again get the Master Chief and the Arbiter. Both updated to reflect their armor in Halo 5 Guardians.Gausshog side
This Gausshog also features the side rails. Note the yellow seats as well. Gausshog top
This shot was from the booth that was on the upper floor of the convention center. Check out the yellow gas tanks. Gausshog side 2
Below we see that we get a shiny metallic green Chief with this set.Gausshog MC
and now on to what I think is the star of this set, the new armored Arbiter.Gausshog Arbiter front
One thing I will confirm now is that he has added articulation. An extra ‘hock’ joint (that’s the proper term, though some will say ankle), and the new style shoulder joints that the UNSC figs got last year.

As well, he has REMOVABLE armor!  (Oh and that one foot doesn’t have a big heel on the end, that’s just a gas tank.)

The Banshee is next. I took care to take the pics of this as if it was swooping down.Banshee side
The cockpit opens. Inside it’s a box like area that the pilot sits in. I had a pic of this but it was a little too blurry for me to use. Apologies.

As you can see the wing detail has changed quite a bit. Gone are the long angular wings, replaced by smaller ones.

The top shell is also different. I think it looks better, though I’m not fond of the markings.Banshee top front
and finally, the pilot. Sorry this one is grainy, but I wanted to let you see that it too, like the Arbiter has the extra joint and removable armor. So let’s call this confirmed that at least Elites in 2015 will have the new articulation as well!!Banshee Elite Pilot

I’m pretty stoked for the Gausshog set. Ill enjoy having it displayed next to my HaloFest one. Hmm, now we need a Rocket Hog in this color scheme too!!!

I’m VERY happy that the Elites will get the new articulation treatment. This was overdue.

  1. I think that’s the new elite from the esculation comics, sali nyon

    • No, it’s definitely the Arbiter. He is in a cut scene in Halo 2 Anniversary with this precise armor.

      • Oh. Well, that’s a generic armor type. It could be, but I don’t think so. We’ll find out sooner or later.

  2. are the helmets removable?? like you can remove the helmets but keep the head on??

  3. The new elite articulation is what i’m most excited about! It also seems that they are taller as well! The arbiter looks great, if not for a little yellow. And I really like that new banshee!

    • Oh yeah, when they are stood up fairly straight they are slightly taller. I too wish the Arbiter fig was Gold and not Yellow. I have a feeling though that we’ll see him released again in Gold.

    • For me, it’s because they are stickers. I’m not a fan of stickers on toys as they always peel off for me.

  4. I’m a bit disappointed in the Gausshog. Personally, I would have liked it to come in the regular UNSC colors. The Arbiter looks kinda strange to me as well. (BTW, the Halo Fest Warthog had a rocket turret)

As for the “Banshee”, I’m so happy Mega Bloks finally updated it or at least made a vehicle that looks pretty much like the Halo: Reach/Halo 4 Banshee. There’s way too much gray on the sides though. I’m assuming this is the Halo 5 version since it has those strange circles on the tip of its wings.
