The official XBOX twitter account tweeted the following text along with the pic from the latest HUNTtheTRUTH campaign pic:
Okay, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, if 343 kills off Master Chief, I’m going to be pissed. He IS Halo!
If they concoct some ridiculous story that the man in the armor has never been that ‘John’ but someone else, again, they will have made a huge mistake.
Changing long standing ‘history’ in your franchise for the sake of moving the story along in a different direction is appalling to me. It slaps the collective fanbase in the face by saying you THOUGHT you knew the true story but didn’t. Fact is, 343 didn’t know the ‘true’ story either. If they change the history of John/Master Chief, then it becomes revisionist history.
Again, 343 are NOT the creators of Halo, they are now the current stewards of the franchise. Mucking about with, or even off-handedly commenting about this history (through channels such as the XBOX twitter feed) is a dangerous prospect. They risk losing even more of the fanbase than has already left.
Many of us very much into the lore of Halo do not want to see it changed for change sake. There is so much more that can be told of the Master Chief without having to change one iota of his past.
I’ll say this much, if 343 does change Chief’s history, I simply won’t buy any more of the comics/novels that have Chief in the story.
If we can’t believe what has already been written, how could we then believe what has yet to be?
I don’t mind the HUNTtheTRUTH campaign on the whole, just so long as what has been written is not being rewritten into something else.
What is your opinion on this? And I’ll ask that if you don’t care either way to refrain from commenting. I want to hear from those who either want Chief’s story to remain intact (and he live) or those who want the story to be rewritten with him dead.

That would be awful if 343i changed John’s story. Not a very appealing idea. I agree with you 100% on this.
And if he dies, it should be in a glorious flash of self sacrifice for the greater good, or something similar to that. Even though it would be very sad…….
its referring to how John is the Master Chief but he died at 6 so how can he be Chief if he died. Thats what the two fact thing means

I hear ha. While I love to speculate on things about Halo, I’d much rather have the actual answers.
Its seems as if in the next few years halo would be different. They changed the rocket launcher for gods sake. I respect 343 for taking over halo, but there making it their halo and not the halo we loved for 10+ years. Their just doing it hiw they want it. I miss the green military feel, heavy drums and the chants in the music from halo ce-reach. Now its all futuristic and techno
Yeah, 343’s Halo is different from Bungie’s. I know they want to put their own mark on the franchise. however, they didn’t need to do it’s heavy handed as they did with Halo 4. If they go the direction of killing Master Chief, they will have gone a bit too far for me, I’m also concerned about the massive skew towards pro/competitive play for multiplayer. Yes, it’s needed, but casual play still,need to be there too. Balance is important. Halo 4 was too casual. They do not need to make up for that by making Halo 5 uber pro/competitive.
Again, I really doubt that 343i will actually kill the Chief. The Tweet is probably referring to John’s clone especially since it refers to the HUNTtheTRUTH campaign which so far has been more or less concentrating on the clone.
As for changing the original John’s backstory, I also have doubts. The Halo lore has been consistent (except for the fall of Reach) with no retcons that I can remember.
It seems to me you didn’t quite understand the tweet as someone above pointed out – it’s reffering to John having obviously become the master chief – yet how he “died at 6” in reality he did both. 343 are not going to change anything
I don’t see why they decided to change so much! The aiming would have been cool if it had been added way earlier. The abilities give it a cod/Destiny feel. It doesn’t even feel like Halo anymore.
I agree with a couple of the comments above that the tweet you mention is in the context of the Hunt The Truth campaign and not necessarily an indication of where they are going with the series. That being said, I would be disappointed if they killed of John-117 now. In a couple of games, maybe. It would mostly depend on how it happened. I think most people expect him to die in battle rather than growing old and telling old war stories at the VIW (Veterans of Interplanetary Wars) hall! 🙂 That would be fine with me, but I hope they come up with a really unexpected way for him to go out. I don’t know what it might be (if I did it would not be unexpected), but something that made you go “OH! I didn’t see that one coming!”
