Halo Toy Review: Mega Bloks Series Charlie Minifigures

MB grey logo

Series Charlie of the blind pack figures is now out and many a Halo Mega Bloks collector is racing to their local stores to find them. I happened to be fortunate to find most of these yesterday (as of this writing), so i figured I’d share reviews with you of the ones I found.

Below is the insert sheet that comes with each blind packed figure. As you can see there are 5 common, 2 rare, and 2 ultra rare. Not pictured are also two completely translucent figures. There is a green spartan and a smoke (I want to say EVA, though In could be wrong…)

The ultra is the same figure with exception to a few coloration of pieces. It’s a phasing Jackal. There are right and left phasing variant. Sadly, these were the two of the pictured figs that I didn’t find. Ah well, I’ll get them eventually…MB S-Charlie insert

So here are 7 of the 9 pictured ones though. Note the huge difference in height now. The Elite is by far taller! Click pics to make bigger!)MB S-Charlie Lineup

Speaking of the Elite, here it is with the Grunt. Quite a large height disparity here and that’s a GREAT thing! I’m SO glad that Mega has finally given us a properly scale Elite. It towers over the UNSC figures and dwarfs the Grunt. The color choices for each of these is good. Now we have another Gold figure to add to our repertoire of Goldies! The Elite comes with a Beam Rifle, while the Grunt comes with the new style Plasma Pistol.MB S-Charlie Elite-Grunt

Next up is an Orange Centurion armored Spartan and a Green Grenedier. These are also referred to in collector circles as Orange Fred and Green Jorge as that’s the armor each of those Spartan’s wear, but in different color. Normally I’m not a fan of the orange color. Of course it works for a Grifball set (which we have yet to have seen Mega produce…hint hint), but it looks good for this figure. As for Green Jorge, I’m ALWAYS a fan of green color spartans, so this is a nice addition to my collection. ‘Fred’ comes with a shotgun, while strangely, ‘Jorge’ comes with a Plasma Pistol. I do wish that characters from a certain faction would be released with weapons from their faction. Jorge should have had a UNSC weapon in other words.MB S-Charlie Spartans Orange-Green

Here we see Cyan Soldier and Steel Orbital Spartans. I really REALLY like the cyan fig. That color just POPS! The Steel Spartan is excellent but for that pink visor. Ugh… I think that’s the first time we’ve got an actual pink visored fig. That detracts from an otherwise stellar figure. I may need to get a second one of these to custom color that visor. The Cyan spartan has a shotgun, different from the Orange spartan, while the Steel Orbital has a Pistol.MB S-Charlie Spartans Cyan-Steel

Lastly we have the UNSC Arctic Pilot. This figure is one of the few army building figures in Series Charlie. However…it has one major design flaw. The armored fig looks good, but the issue is that it utilizes the spartan chest rather than the standard UNSC chest for non-spartan figures. Since the chest armor is a one-piece slip over, it’s VERY tight on the spartan chest itself. This also dramatically hinders the head movement. Intact, you may find it a bit hard to get the helmet completely snapped down onto the neck stub. MB S-Charlie Pilot

It’s a mistake that I’ve read is bothersome to other collectors as well, so I’m not the only one. This to me was the one figure I was most looking forward to (to army build). I will still get a few of it (4). But I was really looking forward to getting about 8 of these. If there happens to be a Spartan figure that gets a UNSC chest instead and it’s black, well, then that’s an easy fix by swapping parts. I won’t expect that to happen any time soon though.MB S-Charlie Pilot chestThe pilot comes with a pistol that is a different shade than the one with the steel spartan.

All in all the choice of figures is fine. The Elite is definitely the best, IMO, due to it’s new super possibility and removable armor. The Spartans are standard fare at this point. Color choice for those was decent. Again, the Pilot would have been the other best figure, but for the chest piece mistake. And yes, it is a mistake that this was chosen to be used.

Still, I give this series a 9 out of 10 medals. One point off for the Pilot-Chest error.

Good selection of different characters. Covenant, UNSC, Spartans.
Okay selection of weapons.

As for the Phasing Jackals that I do not have yet, you bet I’ll get those. I am a little strange when it comes to phasing figs like these. I both like and don’t like them. Of course I like the phasing aspect. But I find it strange that we’re getting left and right sided phasing figures. If Mega stopped making phasing figs like the Jackal form this series and the Brute from series past, I’d be okay with it.

As for those two fully translucent figs….UGH…I really want to get those. Totally translucent toys are an obsession with me, LOL.

  1. Great review Sal!

That BEAUTIFUL sangheili is something that I want to add to my collection thirty times over. I wish that he came with a storm rifle though. He is my personal army builder in this set, and I don’t want a bunch of beam rifles…..

It stinks that the pilot has a spartan chest. Maybe its something that Mega will fix in new batches? And that pink visor. I was under the impression that it was red. Ugh.

That cyan spartan soldier is pretty snazzy though!

All in all, I think that this is a pretty good set.

And I know what you mean about translucent figures Sal. Even though my translucent Sangheili Honor Guard that I have is probably the only gummy that I’ll ever need. 😉
