And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER)

The front of the box shows the set in a great action sequence with the Rocket Hog and additional armor mode shown. The back of the box shows the hog in it’s Gauss Hog variant.mb-dual-mode-warthog-box

You get an instructions manual, a REQ code for Halo 5 Guardians and several bags of parts.mb-dual-mode-warthog-contents

Here are the parts all sorted out. Took me about 15 minutes to do that.mb-dual-mode-warthog-sorted

Okay, let’s get into the build!

The pic below shows the beginning sequence of this hog. It’s NOT the same build as we have been accustomed to for some time now. It’s MUCH BETTER!!! For one, we get the actual piping on the underside of the hog. That is INCREDIBLE! The suspension is less than previous versions of the hog, but LOOKS much better. mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-1

Here you see that we get a nicely printed tile with the hog on it. The other pieces with the red/black boxes is also a printed piece. Nice touch!mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-2

When you get to the tow cable, it’s the real deal! You build this and can use it to get other vehicles out of any mud they may get in. The set came with both the thin and thicker strings. You only use one of these for the set. It’s your choice. I went with the thicker string.mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-3-tow-cable

Next up we start building the body. ONly small portions of this are like previous hog builds. The engine detail is where it takes a different approach and it’s glorious! It’s something that when completed you’ll never see unless you take it apart. But knowing it’s there is super awesome!

With exception to the wheels, this is the base form of the hog. Neither Guass not Rocket variant just yet. You can just as easily put a machine gun turret on this from a different hog, if you so choose. I’m diggin’ the brown (I’m assuming leather) seats.mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-5

In this truncated/cropped pic, you see the suspension. Those reddish pieces act as the shock absorbers.mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-6

Next we build the Guass cannon. And I mean BUILD! No longer do you get that big one piece mold. Nope, now you actualy build the cannon. I’m very happy about that as I wasn’t a big fan of the one-piece modle.mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-7-guass

Attach that and the wheels and you’ve got the Guass hog version!mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-8-fin1

To ‘upgrade’ your hog to the Rocket hog version, you take off certain pieces (LEFT). You then add on buildable pieces for addtional armor, as well as the buildable rocket launcher.mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-9-dual-modes

BAM! Upgrade!! I’m especially keen on the Hornet printed slope pieces. Why? Well, that was the emblem I and my first Halo gaming group used. So it brings back some nice memories for me.mb-dual-mode-warthog-steps-10-fin2

Here’s the rocket hog in orthogonal views.mb-dual-mode-warthog-ortho

You get a magnum, hydra and two stands for the figures.mb-dual-mode-warthog-accessories

Here are the extra pieces I had leftover. Into the parts bin…mb-dual-mode-warthog-leftovers

Next are the figs. I am a BIG fan of this stone color. There is some slight speckling in the armor that makes it appear as having exrtra texture. Really a great choicce here!mb-dual-mode-warthog-figs-ortho

And finally, our Spartans are ready to roll and take out some bad guys!!mb-dual-mode-warthog-final

Summary: This is an easy build. The swapable parts between the gauss and rocket variants are easy to switch out, making the replay value of this set high. Great choice of figures and color for this figs helps to round out a fantastic set!

Overall Rating: I give this set 9.5 out for 10 medals.

Why did I give it a 9.5 out of 10?
• The ONLY thing I would have changed in this set are the brown pieces (not the seats, but all the other brown parts). I’d have made them either black or silver. They kind of stand out and not in a good way. Really though, this is minor by comparison to the whole set.

This warthog desing is a refreshing change from the norm and a definite upgrade from previous warthogs of the past. I hope Mega continues with the base build of this hag for future warthog sets.

Value: The price of $33-35 is right on par with the piece count. With the ability to make this either a gauss or rocket hog, the value shoots up. For me, the choice of spartan armor and color is a bonus and adds some value. So I give value for this set an A+!

Do I recommend it?  Yes! By far one of if not THE best warthog design to date. The base model of the set before putting on the weapons and additional armor really is near perfect. You’d be remiss not to buy this one folks!!

  1. So there’s no actual suspension? Huh. It does look better though.

I’m not too keen on the “upgrade”; besides the color it doesn’t look bad but it just seems kind of pointless IMO.

I think a better “multiple mode” Warthog set would have all the different turrets available and/or give the option to change it into the troop transport configuration.

    • There is some slight suspension. Just nowhere near as much before. Honestly, I don’t mind that change.

  2. Excellent review, like you, I like the color choices on the figures. Also i like the prints on the set.
