The 12 Days of Halo Toy Reviews: Day 3; Mega Bloks ODST Customizer set

Today is the third of 12 consecutive days of Halo Toy Reviews. Over the course of these days, I’ll be reviewing Halo Mega Bloks, Mattel Halo figures, Prop weapons and more.

Also, I want to make note that Mega Bloks has changed it’s name to Mega Construx. For the sets I’m reviewing that still have the Mega Bloks logo, that will be present in them. The sets that are now Mega Construx will have that logo instead. With a possible one or two exceptions, starting in 2017, all Mega reviews will be Mega Construx instead of Mega Bloks. Same company, different name.

And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER)

This set is pretty elusive at the moment. I’ve only seen it ONCE at stores. So if you’re on the fence about buying it, get it, before you can’t find it again.

Some folks are big time ODST fans. This set is most certainly one for them!
The box displays the pre-built figures as well as all the accessories, with exception to the 2 figures stands within the crates.mb-odst-customizer-box

Here is the tray of figs and pieces without the package in the way. There really isn’t a need for the instruction insert, but it’s nice it’s there for some who might need or want it.mb-odst-customizer-tray

This shot shows all the pieces removed from the tray as well as the two stands and minus the crates.mb-odst-customizer-contents

Let’s take a closer look at the figures. Below shows the pre-buit silver figure. Notice the scope on the helmet.mb-odst-customizer-ortho-silver

With a few swapped armor pieces and helmet, you’ve got a new ODST. There are SOOOO many combinations that I’m only showing one here.mb-odst-customizer-silver-variant

The pre-built dark grey ODST. I really like this one. mb-odst-customizer-ortho-dark-grey

Once again, swap out some parts and helmet and bam, a new fig. This one is sporting a recon helmet.

The two crates provided have PLENTY of storage room for all of the accessories included in the set.mb-odst-customizer-crates

And finally, here is my choice of armor for the figs. From the pre-built Silver ODST, I used the standard ODST helmet and the dark grey matching shoulder armor from the other figure. For the dark grey ODST, I decided to make it a Veronica Dare variant. No shoulder pads and the Recon helmet. The only major difference between this fig and the in-game character is the visor. Dare’s visor is gold. (I might just paint this one to match???)mb-odst-customizer-fin

Summary: This set is ready to go out of the package. No sorting time. Easily removable armor pieces make for a lot of fun, mixing and matching parts.

Overall Rating: I give this set 9 out for 10 medals.

Why did I give it a 9 out of 10?
• The only issue I have is the second helmets. I’d have preferred a Blue standard one for the silver figure instead of the standard silver. The red armor is slightly out of place as neither figure has a red helmet. But that’s me being a little nitpicky. Having the extra sets of armor may come in handy later when other ODST figures will be released. Which is almost a given, as it’s a popular figure/character choice.

Let me break down my opinion of the value of this set. (In US dollars)
The set generally retails for $9, so that’s what I’ll base this break down off of.
• Each figure, plus a weapon, knife, backpack and stand are $3.50. So that’s $7 of the set’s value right there.
• I put each crate with lid at 75 cents, $1.50 total
• 8 shoulder pads at 15 cents each, $1.20 total
• 2 additional helmets 40 cents each, 80 cents total
• 2 additional chest armors 40 cents each, 80 cents total
That brings my estimated value of the set to: $11.30.

Since the set retails for $2.30 less than that on average, the value is very good!

Do I recommend it?  YES! Even if you don’t use the extra armor bits, having an all silver and an all dark grey ODST are awesome to have and considered army builders by some collectors, myself, most certainly included. Those crates will definitely come in handy too.

Again, this set is HARD TO FIND. So if you see it, pick it up! If not for you, then a fellow collector. And please…do NOT scalp them for it. (artificially inflating the price) Be kind to your fellow collector and they (hopefully) will do so as well.

If you have any questions about this set that I didn’t cover in the review, please do not hesitate to ask me. Either reply below or e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think of the review. If you get this set yourself, please let me know your thoughts on it too!

If this review gives you an informed decision on whether to purchase the set or not, please consider a small donation (50 cents) maybe. It’s much appreciated and helps ensure that halofanforlife.com stays active on the internet. Thank You.
