Halo Anniversary Series 2 a more detailed look: Master Chief

This all-new version of John-117 shows the hero as he appeared in the 2010 animated movie, Halo Legends, and is our first figure inspired by the Halo “expanded universe” of animation, novels, and comic books. Figure comes with Assault Rifle, Frag Grenade, and the globe piece of the UNSC Logo. (text from Spawn.com)

Thoughts from HaloFanForLife:
This is an excellent sculpt of Master Chief from the Legends cartoon. Since Legends is considered canon to the Halo Universe timeline, I’d have to assume this is an earlier version of the Mjolnir armor, possibly Mk III. Regardless, it’s well done and I look forward to owning it.

Mega Bloks shows off some cool stuff at Nuremburg Toy Fair.

Nuremburg Toy Fair in Germany is going on now and Mega Bloks was kind enough to post some images of their display.

Wow, the Gold Ascetic Elite and Gold Elite General are awesome. Can’t wait to find out when and where these will be available.

The Brute chopper is a neat little set and comes with the new Brute Chieftan and Gravity hammer! I hope to acquire 8 of those hammers as I want to make a Griffball set.

The full display of their die cast line is nice to look at. Looks like a huge battlefield!

Woot, more to come soon and more to come in less than two weeks when HFFL goes to New York Toy Fair!

McFarlane Halo Micro Ops sets pictured!

We finally have some pre-release images of McFarlane’s Halo Micro Ops line!

The prices for each set are as follows (at normal retail):
High Ground Bunker – $17
Falcon – $`17
Ghost Vs. Wolf Spider Turret – $9
ODST Drop Pod Two-pack – $9
Banshee – $9
Warthog and Mongoose set – $9

Each set comes with 2 or 3 minifigs (non articulated as far as I can tell (though I’ll see these hopefully at Toy Fair in less than two weeks).

I am looking forward to seeing these in person. I’m likely to buy multiples of the small sets like the Warthog/Mongoose and Ghost/Wolf Spider Turret to help fill out diorama set.

McFarlane Halo Anniversary Series 2 figures and box set.

These just released photos are of the upcoming Anniversary series 2 figures and box set.

I’m very happy with McFarlane making 343 Guilty Spark. I’m ecstatic with Keyes being made. I’ve personally wanted more campaign unique characters like him made. Glad to have Mickey. I’m not so thrilled with the White/Blue Spartan, though I know it’s a nod to former license holders of the Toy Line.

The new take on Master Chief (from the Legends cartoon) is fine. I do like the box set of Spartans too.

I’m looking forward to seeing these in person at Toy Fair.

Mega Bloks 2012 lineup? Leaked “prototype” images.

The images in this post were gleaned from the following link (note that these have been stated as prototypes and may not be the actual product to appear on store shelves later this year): http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=495022

Of this photos, I’m most looking forward to the Sabre set. It’s well designed and I’m very glad it comes with playset pieces besides the ship. Though that will drive the cost up. Next the Rhino is welcome. Though it’s an obscure vehicle from Halo Wars, it commands to be played with. Bigger and more powerful than a Scorpion tank and with two extra tread sets, it’s a behemoth on the battle field.

I already have two Wraiths, though I know I’ll get another of these in this newer format. The Seraph is the counter to the UNSC’s Sabre and looks well made. The only suggestion I would have had was to make more of it in the wine/burgandy color bloks like the recently release Revenant was. The Orbital Banshee screams for multiple purchases and with the added AA cannon, I know I’ll be getting a few of them.

I’ll get all of the figure sets of course and will look to build up a small army of Elite Flood. The Brute Chieftan with Chopper is cool. Now if I can just get my hands on 8 more of the Gravity Hammers that come with that set so I can make a cool Griffball set…

Well, since these are “prototype” pics, I’ll enjoy them for what they are. More to come though in a few weeks when HaloFanForLife goes to New York for Toy Fair!

McFarlane Toys to Create Halo Avatar Figures

From www.halowaypoint.com:
http://halo.xbox.com/blogs/Headlines/post/2012/01/20/McFarlane-Toys-to-Create-Halo-Avatar-Figures.aspx

Unique Partnership to Bring Inexpensive, Stylized Figures to Halo and Xbox 360 Fans

This fall, McFarlane Toys, Xbox LIVE and 343 Industries are joining forces to bring Halo fans an all-new series of unique collectibles: Halo Avatars. While our standard 6-inch figures are based on the Halo video games themselves, Halo Avatars are based on the stylized representations of the Halo characters that are available on the Xbox 360 console itself.

First introduced in 2008, avatars are the online representation of a gamer’s Xbox LIVE profile. Players can select from thousands of unique bodies, hairstyles, clothing, and accessories to create their own custom characters. Through the online marketplace, gamers can add themed avatar gear from dozens of video-game licenses, including Halo. From Halo-themed t-shirts, to Spartan helmets, to full suits of character armor, gamers can make their avatars look like true Halo fans, or even characters from the Halo universe.

Todd McFarlane, CEO and founder of McFarlane Toys, explains, “Rather than make up our own style of mini-figure, we decided to take advantage of the style that Xbox LIVE has established with their avatars. Since each avatar represents an individual gamer, players have a strong personal connection to their avatars. When you choose a Halo Spartan helmet for your avatar, that helmet becomes more than just a piece of some fictional character’s clothing—it becomes part of your online persona. Avatars have become the mascot of the Xbox brand. To represent the customization options available for online avatars, McFarlane Toys’ avatar figures feature interchangeable heads, torsos, and legs. Collectors can mix and match pieces to create their own custom avatar figures, much like they can with their online avatars. In addition to human characters and apparel, Halo Avatars also include various “prop” items such as Warthogs and Banshees.

Todd says, “Working with both Xbox LIVE and 343 Industries gives us access to a huge new library of Halo characters, with a fun, friendly style that is perfect for casual collectors.”

Each 2 1/2″–tall avatar figure is randomly packaged in a small, Halo-themed plastic cylinder. The top and bottom of each cylinder can be removed, and each piece can be used as a display base. The tubes can even be connected, stacking to form a multi-level display.

“With Halo Avatars,” Todd continues, “we wanted to do something as different as possible from our standard 6-inch figures. Those figures are big, game-accurate, heavily articulated, and serious. Our avatar figures are small, stylized, pre-posed, and playful. With a standard action figure, you know exactly what you’re getting. With an avatar figure, each one is a surprise. And collecting a full series of our standard figures can be a significant investment, but an avatar figure is something any fan can afford.”

The MSRP of a single avatar figure is less than three dollars. “Halo Avatars let fans get a cool new Halo toy for a fraction of the cost of a full-sized action figure,” Todd notes. With Halo Avatars, McFarlane Toys hopes to reach out to a new audience. Xbox LIVE avatars are rated E, for Everyone, so they can be enjoyed by collectors of all ages.

Halo Avatars Series 1 consists of eight random figures:

• Master Chief
• Carter
• ODST
• Flaming ODST Helmet and ODST T-Shirt
• Green Operator Helmet and Reach T-Shirt
• Elite Costume
• Warthog
• Metallic Gold Master Chief

Halo Avatars debut in fall 2012 and continues into 2013. Available at Walmart, Target, Toys “R” Us, GameStop, local comic book stores, drug stores, and other retailers. MSRP is $3.

Here is the full text from HaloWaypoint.com:

New Miniature Toy Line to Offer Wide Range of Small-Scale Figures, Vehicles and Environments from the Halo Universe

McFarlane Toys expands its long-running, best-selling line of Halo collectibles this fall, with the addition of Halo Micro Ops. This all-new series consists of miniature figures, vehicles, and locations from the entire Halo universe, at roughly 1:100/15mm scale.

Todd McFarlane, CEO and founder of McFarlane Toys says, “Halo is known for its massive, larger-than-life visuals. From the towering Forerunner relics, to the enormous military transports, to the Halo rings themselves, everything is designed to make your human character feel small and overwhelmed. That’s awesome for a video game, but it’s a challenge for toy makers! With our standard 6-inch action figures, we found we could release small vehicles like the Ghost and the Mongoose, and medium ones like the Warthog, but that was about as big as we could go. In order to be able to create anything larger—to really bring the rest of the Halo universe to collectors—we had to go smaller. Much smaller.”

With its smaller size, Halo Micro Ops covers the Halo universe, from the tiniest Grunt to the largest Scarab. With such a wide range of product sizes to cover, Micro Ops is available in four different packages. Small carded sets include small vehicles like the Warthog and Ghost. Larger carded sets offer bigger vehicles such as the Falcon, or small buildings like the Bunker from theHalo 3 multiplayer map High Ground. Larger buildings, including the Tower or Gate sections of High Ground, are packaged in small boxes, while large vehicles such as the Elephant will be packaged in an even larger box.

“When you turn the scale down, you turn the possibilities up,” Todd explains. “With Micro Ops, we’re pulling the camera way back, and looking at a bigger picture. Our 6-inch figures are a great way to bring the individual characters of Halo to collectors—from Master Chief, to Noble Team, to the Elites and Grunts of the Covenant. But the Halo universe is so much bigger than that. Vehicles like the Pelican, the Falcon, the Phantom—they’re all important pieces of the universe. Environments like New Mombasa, High Charity, or The Library; these are all as memorable and important as Master Chief himself. With Micro Ops, we can now begin to bring the full scope of Halo to fans.”

Halo Micro Ops delivers the whole package, with all of the amazing detail and game accuracy that McFarlane Toys is famous for. With Micro Ops, Halo fans are able to collect the breadth of the Halo universe, with all the pieces perfectly in scale with one another, and without taking up too much space.

Recreate your favorite moments from a Halo campaign, multiplayer or firefight, or create your own custom scene. Collect your favorite pieces, or build a massive army and stage an epic battle for the fate of the galaxy. With UNSC, Covenant and Forerunner forces, the entire Halo universe is yours to command. The only limit is your imagination.

The initial Micro Ops lines cover the Halo trilogy, Halo 3: ODSTHalo Wars, and Halo: Reach. Later lines will add figures, vehicles, and environments from Halo 4. Series 1 includes:

Small Carded Sets
• Warthog and Mongoose
• Banshee
• Ghost vs. Wolf Spider turret (pic of turret below)

• ODST Drop Pods

Large Carded Sets
• Falcon
• High Ground Bunker with Shade turret

Small Boxed Sets
• High Ground Gate with Warthog
• High Ground Tower and SAM Launcher

Large boxed sets will be available in 2013.

Halo Micro Ops debuts in August 2012 and continues into 2013. Available at Target, Toys “R” Us, local comic book stores, and other retailers. MSRPs range from $8 for the small carded sets, $18 for large carded sets and $29 for the small boxed sets.

McFarlane Toys Halo line-up for 2012 PREVIEW

Here’s the official link from HaloWaypoint.com:
McFarlane Toys to Create Halo 4 Action Figures

Here it is in full text (my thoughts to follow after initial post):

Long-Running, Best-Selling Figure Line Continues in 2012 with All-New Figures from the Latest Halo Video Game

This fall, Microsoft Studios and 343 Industries are releasing Halo 4, the highly anticipated video game expected to be one of the top entertainment launches of 2012. McFarlane Toys is proud to announce that its best-selling line of Halo action figures continues this fall as well, with figures from Halo 4.

Halo 4 brings back the most popular character of the Halo universe, the Master Chief, and kicks off an all-new trilogy of games. Dubbed the “Reclaimer Trilogy” by 343 Industries, these new games explore the characters of the Master Chief and Cortana, expand the Halo fiction in bold new ways and bring even more of the innovation that the Halo series is known for to the gaming world. McFarlane Toys Halo 4 action figures bring the all-new characters, weapons and vehicles of Halo 4 to video-game fans and action-figure collectors worldwide.

“Each new Halo game is a significant entertainment event,” says Todd McFarlane, CEO and founder of McFarlane Toys. “Halo 4marks the return of the Master Chief and Cortana, plus the introduction of new characters, weapons and locations sure to excite long-time fans.”

Action figure collectors can expect the same quality and attention to detail in the Halo 4 line that they’ve come to expect from McFarlane toys. “We’re really excited to be working with the all-star team of 343 Industries,” Todd notes. “Microsoft has assembled an incredible group of developers to ensure Halo‘s continued place among the top entertainment franchises. 343 Industries is pushing the envelope with the visuals, storytelling and gameplay, and we can’t wait until fans get their hands onHalo 4.”

The Halo 4 figure series continues in the 6-inch size introduced with their Halo: Reach figures. They’re also introducing a series of larger, boxed figures. These deluxe items are in scale with their 6-inch figures, but include larger accessories, such as Master Chief’s Cryotube.

McFarlane Toys is part of a select group of licensees with Halo 4 products available at game launch. Halo 4 Series 1 kicks off this August with four carded figures and one boxed figure set, and expands to include even more figures later in the fall.

Todd promises, “343 still has some surprises to reveal, so we can’t give you all the details just yet. But we’ve seen what they’re working on, and Halo 4 will be worth the wait!”

HALO UNIVERSE

In addition to its all-new Halo 4 action figure line, McFarlane Toys is continuing its popular Halo: Anniversary series in fall 2012. Since the franchise’s tenth anniversary has now passed, the line is being rebranded as “Halo Universe.”

Halo Universe continues to bring fans the classic, fan-favorite characters from the earlier Halo games, and even includes “expanded universe” sources such as novels, comic books and the animated feature, Halo Legends. This series also continues the popular “build-a-figure” feature of our Halo: Anniversary lines, bringing collectors an extra bonus item such as the Difficulty Plaque or UNSC Logo.

Todd explains, “Halo 4 brings fans figures from the latest and greatest Halo video game. But Halo is a franchise with over a decade of incredible games, movies, books and comics. With our Halo Universe line, we can continue to offer long-time fans the classic characters they know and love.”

McFarlane releases full pics of Halo Series 6 figures and Deluxe sets!

First I need to give credit for the pics to McFarlane’s website: http://www.spawn.com/news/news2.aspx?id=13807

Now onto the pics (I’ve consolidated them here for quicker reference).

First the single carded figures to scale with one another:

Click on each thumbnail to see a larger version.

Great looking figures as always. I’m partial to the Brute and JFO. For some reason I really like the way McFarlane has sculpted the brutes. I wear the JFO helmet a lot in multiplayer, so it stands to reason I’d be partial to it. I still find it strange though that Walgreen’s got the exclusive for this. Jun and Kat look good and they round out the rest of unhelmeted Noble squad members. (We never saw Emile or Noble 6 clearly without helmets in the game.)

Of the three deluxe sets, I am looking forward to the objective one the most, then the Invasion one. I wouldn’t have bought the Generator Defense one, but McFarlane scored with me by including the JFO.

Mega Bloks Revenant Custom

As promised I took my second set of the newly released Covenant Revenant Attack and customized that Revenant to be more accurate to the in-game model.

So here it is next to the original on the left. I was extremely fortunate during the custom build to have enough pieces left over to make somewhat close mini-sized Revenant.

I ONLY used pieces from the one set to make the custom. NO parts were used from the other set. So you too can make this custom if you just bought one set.

(Click on pics to open up a larger version)

Here is a nice shot of the custom a 3/4 front driver’s side view.

Here is the mini at a similar position:

A comparison front view of the original/in-game/custom model.

A comparison side view of the original/in-game/custom model.

As you can see by the front view I was able to make it slimmer and closer to the in-game model. Also note that the much of the build retains the original build at least from the outside. The rear area had some slight changes to accommodate the large 3×3 curved pieces. I integrated them with the back to better reflect the in-game model with shows more of the wine color armor on top and just to the sides of the seats.

For those wondering, YES, the side wings do indeed rotate, though less than Mega Bloks’s design. I was willing to give up a little bit of that articulation for better accuracy to the look, however my pivot point is much closer to the in-game model than the original.

I’m going to keep both the original and custom versions intact. I do have a couple of ideas for a third version of this set. If it ever goes on sale later on in the year, I’ll tackle this custom again and rework the design.

I hope you like the custom. Let me know what you think of it by signing up for my blog and posting here.

Mega Bloks Review: Covenant Revenant Attack

Covenant Revenant Attack: Set number 96982

Build Time: 5 minutes sorting, 30 minutes build. Total 35 minutes.

Set Piece count: 281
Minifigs: Elite Ultra, Elite Minor, Spartan Commando
Weapons and Accessories: Needler, Plasma Rifle, SMG, Long Ammo Crate, Bubble Shield generator
Special Features: Revenant’s front wings pivot, rear mounted cannon deploys

Dimensions: Revenant: approx. 6 in. long X 5 in. X 2 in. high; Bubble Shield: approx 5 1/2 in. diameter X 3 in. high.
Price/Value: $32.99 US

The set has 281 pieces. Most of these are dedicated to the Revenant, while the remaining are shared between the Covenant barriers and bubble shield. The directions are straight forward, with one exception. Step 12 calls for a small curved piece. Be certain you have the smallest size. I put on the one just bigger than that then realized my mistake at the next step.

All in all this is a great set. Cool new minifigs with excellent sculpting and paint application, and a repeat of the blue elite minor, which is a welcome army building enemy.

The Revenant’s color is amazing. It’s a shiny wine/burgundy color that really stands out. It’s VERY close to the in-game color. Hopefully this will mean an Elite Zealot minifig will soon come as those colors are very close.
The bubble shield is a great addition to the Halo Mega Bloks toy line. At first I was concerned how this was going to be created. Having experienced bubble shield from other toy lines (the Star Wars Droideka one comes to mind), I was immediately concerned about safety for small children. Not to worry, not only it the shield so large that there is no way it would not let air in, there are 4 holes created by each of the studs on each of the 5 pieces of the outer bubble shield. This was a WELL executed piece and I highly applaud Mega Bloks for the design and consideration to child safety.
The Covenant barriers are two welcome pieces of set dressing. I always appreciate the extras like these as they bring a subtle yet more filling role to the set and toy line overall.

When I first heard that the Revenant was going to be made I was ecstatic. I consider this the Covenant’s hot rod of Halo Reach. It has the speed of the ghost and half the firepower of the wraith. With it’s sleek curving lines and color it really stood out.

For the typical retail price of $32.99, this set is just slightly overpriced, however I have my theories as to why. I’ve talked with two other collectors about this as well and the theory summarized is that the new color as well as molding had to have it’s costs recouped somehow. Not to mention the amount of paint applications on the minifigs, especially the Ultra, and Spartan. I hold a general 10 cents per part rule when considering price. So at 281 pieces that amounts to just over $28. The set costs $5 more. However, in my opinion, given the great new color and the amazing bubble shield I consider it worth it. An extra minifig would have been great. Since there are extra arms and a helmet for the Spartan that makes up the difference for me.

I’m VERY pleased with this set with one exception. The front wings are one stud too wide. You’ll see in the pics later the comparison between the toy and the in-game model and it will become quite clear. As well Mega actually got the wings wrong as far as the position of where the wing pivots. It should have been further out and not right next to the body. Still it’s close, just not perfect. The only other minor annoyance was that I couldn’t get the Ultra into the set with the peg in the back and had to take that out and just have him holding onto one of the steering grips.

Overall Rating: With this review I am changing my medals to go from 1-10 instead of the usual 1-5. For this set I give it an 8.5 medals out of 10. The front wings were the main reason for it not being a 10.

Now on to the pics (click to see a larger version):

The sticker sheet:

The pieces sorted into the “brickyard”.

Some new and interesting pieces in this set:

Step progression shots:

Alternate views of the finished Revenant (before stickers applied):

Toy/In-game comparison shots. Here is where you can plainly see the error of the front wings. You can see how the front wings are too wide and the pivot point should be out further. I believe this could have been accomplished. I did buy two sets of this, so I’m going to attempt to make a custom one with the corrected wings being more slender and the pivot points being further out. Look for that to come in the near future. Note how the toy is more an inverted “T” block shape whereas the in-game model is more trapezoidal and streamlined. I know the Covenant shapes are harder to create in Blok form, so some leeway is given there.

The amazing bubble shield. A note on this. It was first supposed to be yellow/gold as it was in Halo 3. The color wasn’t coming out right, so Mega opted to do it in blue, hence the health shield. They did however keep the generator in the set. While technically incorrect, I am happy they kept the generator in and look forward to a yellow/gold bubble shield in the future.

The Covenant barriers come together:

Here are the pieces left over (I was actually missing two parts from the build, thankfully those were hidden parts. I’ll be contacting Mega about getting the replacement parts for this):

I always enjoy making “minirigs” out of the left over parts and this is what I came up with.

Here are the minifigs that come with the set:

A close up of the Elite Ultra. Fantastic sculpt and paint apps.

The completed set (sans stickers):

I hope you enjoyed reading this review as much as I enjoyed writing it. I also hope you found it informative.

All in all a great set. I recommend getting it!
