New York Toy Fair Halo toy news: Mega Bloks

New York Toy Fair is set to start tomorrow.

We get our first Halo Mega Bloks preview by way of text:

MB grey logo

MEGA BLOKS Halo® The phenomenally successful building set line is invigorated for 2014 with all-new buildable vehicles and playsets, and the introduction of the new Mega Bloks Halo super-poseable micro action figures with interchangeable armor. With over 20 new items in the range,Mega Bloks Halo offers kids and collectors enhanced play experiences based on the iconic Halo entertainment franchise. The Mega Bloks Halo UNSC RC Attack Mantis features a wireless remote control weapons system with multiple rocket launchers!

HFFL: Okay let’s break that paragraph down a bit.
“line is invigorated for 2014 with all-new buildable vehicles and playsets”
– Should it have said REinvigorated? Regardless, all NEW buildable vehicles and PLAYSETS. Okay, so I’m hoping this means with regards to vehicles, they are redesigns of vehicles already done. One exception though I’d like to see is the newer style Banshee. I prefer the smaller curvier wings to the longer straighter ones of the classic trilogy.
– Playset! YES!!! Now what location(s) could they be? There’s a TOn to choose from. Would these be smal like the Cryo Bay one for last year or larger like the High Ground set from the previous year?

“introduction of the new Mega Bloks Halo super-poseable micro action figures with interchangeable armor”
– NEW super poseable figs w/interchangeable armor? Okay, either my mind is BLOWN, or, we’re still getting the same style figures and not the scale/articulation like the COD figs have. As for interchangeable armor? OMG! YES!!! So this has me thinking Mega might just be doing a new scale size. UGH…While it’s nice to have better figures, changing scale always kills things for me. I don’t want to recollect everything all over again. We’ll have to see how this plays out.

• over 20 new items
– This could be anything from single pack figs, to multi pack figs to vehicles and playsets. Again a wait and see. Regardless, still a nice bit to collect, build and play/display.

PEWWWwwwww….
– That sound you just heard was my mind being blown away for sure by this next item.

• UNSC RC Attack Mantis features a wireless remote control weapons system with multiple rocket launchers!
– Remote Controlled Mantis!!! O.M.G.!!!!!!!! Built from bloks? I wonder if it will scrunch down and stand tall? Will it walk? Can it move it’s arms while firing the rockets? How much is this going to be?

Stay tuned to HFFL tomorrow all day. I’ll get to the bottom of Halo Toy News coming out of NYTF and pass it on to you good folks as soon as I’m able to.

Halo Toy Review: Mega Bloks Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack

MB grey logo
Mega Bloks Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack: Set #97420

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 10 minutes (includes sorting time as well)
Set Piece Count: 93
Minifigs: Master Chief Mark VI (Halo 4 style) armor
Weapons: Grey Railgun
Accessories: N/A
Price: $14.99-16.99 depending on where you buy it from.
Special Features: Back of helmet can be used as a display stand. Helmet can be used for small storage.
And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER)

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack Package
I’ve said it many times before that I really love the white border packaging. It makes the box look clean and less cluttered. The back of the box shows the other two Micro Fleet sets currently available.

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack SIDE
This side view shows how far out the helmet juts from the box.

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack ContentsHere are the contents of the box. Strangely enough, none of the bags were inside of the helmet. When you look at the box, the portion that is to the left of the helmet is where the bags are located within.

The next two pics show the helmet and attached base.MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack Helmet
MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack Helmet 2As you can see, you need to press down on the top tab to release the back baseplate.

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack SortedAll the pieces sorted out.

This next set of pics shows the build progression of the mini-rocket hog.

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack 2nd steps
MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack FINThis comes together very quickly and I had no issues with the build.

Orthogonal views of the hog.MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack ORTHO

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack 4rnr-baseHere is the mini Forerunner structure included with the set. As I explain in the video, the structure technically can stand on it’s own, but those little 1×1 slope pieces are free floating and not connected to the structure. So, I made a modification to this build as seen below:

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack 4rnr-base alt buildTo the left a mini-Forerunner ship. It kind of reminds me of an A-wing from Star Wars. The only piece not used it that 1X3 slope piece. However, add it to the back and stand it upright as shown to the right and you’ve got a structure that can stand on it’s own without any free floating pieces.

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack MinifigIf you do not have a “Master Chief” figure, then this is a good choice to get him. While not the same as the one in the Forward Unto Dawn set (which has different markings), it’s close enough.

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack Shrunken Hog“Honey, who shrunk the warthog?”

MB Micro-Fleet Warthog Attack Complete setA neat little set.

Here’s the video review:

Summary: A quick set to build. I think there was a misprint in the number of pieces though as it’s less than 93. I’ve been asking Mega for years to make mini vehicles and ships. This is a great start. Might there be more Micro Fleet sets to come in the future? I’m betting on it.

Overall Rating: I give this set 9 out for 10 medals. If it were a little less in price it would have got a 10. NOTE: I did receive this free from Mega. So while the price didn’t affect me here, I’m still giving my honest opinion.

You can see this set and more at Mega Bloks Halo product page HERE.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think of the review. If you have this set yourself, please give me your thoughts on it too!

Tom Lasky done in retro style

This is the fourth of my wife’s retro styled Halo characters series.

retro-lasky_sm

I like this one. It’s a little different from the others. Feels a little bit more Johnny Quest than Jetsons. The simple font for “Tom” I think was a good choice as Lasky doesn’t seem to be the type to have an outlandish signature.

If you want to repost the graphic, please give my wife credit it your post as “Emily from HaloFanForLife.com”.

So who do you want to see next? Looks like the Arbiter is the top pick for next now. Any others you’d want to see? Reply below and let me know.

If you’re not already registered with the blog to reply, well, it’s FREE and easy. Send me an e-mail at sal@halofanforlife.com letting me know you want to subscribe, give me your preferred username and password. Also, due to the amount of spamming account, I’ll need something more as proof that you’re a real person. XBOX Gamertag would be great. Halo Toy Review Valentine’s edition: Mega Bloks Metallic Series ODST (Red)

Today is Valentine’s Day, so what better color set than a RED set to review!
MB grey logo

Mega Bloks Metallic Series ODST (Red): Set #97420

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: N/A
Set Piece Count: 11
Minifigs: ODST (Metallic Red Highlights with Black Under Armor) The red is really more rust/copper in color.
Weapons: Silenced SMG
Accessories: 2X4 Blok with Metallic Red “Halo” printed on on of the long sides.
Price: $4.99
Special Features: Two-part Drop Pod mold (Not a buildable drop pod)
And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER)

MB Metallic ODST Pod RED Package
The packaging is the drop pod itself, which is a two-part mold. There is a thin sheath of clear plastic that surrounds the pod to keep it intact while hanging on pegs, while waiting to be bought. I just like how they look like hand grenades! Though this one looks more like a piece of fruit, with it being red. LOL

MB Metallic ODST Pod RED Contents
This pic shows the contents of the pod, as well as the pod separated into it’s respective two pieces. The minifigure does not come assemebled. It takes no time at all to put it together though.

The insert sheet shows all four of the sets.
ODST Pod COMMON Poster

Finally here is the minifig close-up.
MB Metallic ODST Pod RED Minifig

It has a great metallic sheen to it. I really like the teeth markings above and below the visor. The blok the fig stands on comes with it and is imprinted with the word “Halo” on it, in Metallic red ink to match the minifig’s detail color. The red on the figure is more of a Rust/Copper color than straight red. I like it!

Here’s the video review:

Summary: No time needed to build this as it’s just the figure, weapon and its’ stand.

Overall Rating: I give this set 10 out for 10 medals.

For the money, this is a good deal. Consider that the single blind pack minifigs are $3-4, for the same or maybe a dollar more, you get the two-part drop pod. If you’re a fan of ODSTs then these are the sets for you!

You can see this set and more at Mega Bloks Halo product page HERE.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think of the review. If you have this set yourself, please give me your thoughts on it too!

My latest Halo Pinterest finds!

Here are this week’s Halo Pinterest finds:

White Heretic Elite sligarthetiger deviantartVery nice concept art. This was done by “Sliger the Tiger”.

Carter by Iuza tumblr
A very well done Carter by artist “Iuza”.

Noble squad conceptYou’ve likely seen this art before. It’s a concept of the Noble characters before their final faces were rendered. What’s important to note is that the previous Noble 6 is in this pic! He’s next to Jorge from the right.

The next three are Noble concept or fan art.Noble concept 2
Noble concept 3
Noble fan art

Covenant Army conceptThis is a fantastic piece of concept art showing the might of the Covenant forces. The blueish hues make them seem more dark and ominous!

Yes, I know this week’s was pretty Reach focused. Say what you want about Reach, I LOVED it. I thought the campaign was a lot of fun and absolutely loved playing Firefight to pass the time.

So did you know that I have a Pinterest page? It’s in the blogroll on the right of the homepage. In case you didn’t see it, here’s a direct link to it. Browse, repin and enjoy!

Halo Toy PRE-view: Mega Bloks series 9 blind pack Halo minifigs!

MB grey logo

Whew, series 8 has barely been out and now we have pics of series 9!!! I want to thank Russell and Kevin, readers of the blog for passing me the link to these.

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6908

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6971

So let’s talk about these individually, shall we?

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6972Ah good another Brute Stalker. Honestly, I wanted more of the blue version seen with the UNSC Cobra set (I previously reviewed HERE). However, I’ll take this one for sure! Nice color AND it has a gravity hammer. YES! Now I should be able to easily collect those hammers so I can finally make a Grifball diorama!!!

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6973I am always up for more Grunts! I like the color of this little fella. Nice to have another wine color Needler as well.

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6974HOLE EEEE SH…shucks!!! OMG, this is FANTASTIC!!!!! I LOVE Skirmishers. I’ve been asking and asking Mega to make these again. Now to have an Active Camo one to boot?!?
AWESOME!!!! Just a little curious why the weapon isn’t Active Camo as well. Not a detractor at all, just curious is all. I’ve got to have 2-3 of this fig. I’m betting it’s the Ultra Rare of this wave.

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6975Sweet, an Alpha Crawler with the blue highlights. This is an excellent follow up to the regular Crawler and Watcher with blue highlights each in Series 8.

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6976Can we haz Recon? Why yes we can! I’m always game for Green Spartans. Though I do wish this was the “Not-Madsen” color instead. Hopefully we see him done the line.

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6977Wow, we haven’t seen a Flame Marine in a LONG time, that I recall. Nice to have another one. I think it’s quite appropriate that it’s orange too. Kind of goes with the “flame” theme!

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6978Yellow Security eh? Okay, I like the color. I’m just not a fan of the helmet. Too “BUG” for me. Still, I know a lot of fans who DO like this helmet, so it’s a welcome addition to the blind pack series.

megabloks-micro-action-figures-series-9-96978-6979Hmm, a Red C.I.O. Spartan and wait, what’s that he’s carrying???? Another Gravity Hammer. AHHHH YEAHHH!!! Grifball diorama here I come!!!

All in all, this is a very good line up for series 9. Excellent army builders in the Brute, Grunt, and Crawler. A welcome return of the Flame Marine. We get three Spartans. And the gem in the series to me, the Active Camo Skirmisher!

Great selection Mega!!!!

The Halo Bulletin 2-12-14

halobulletinheader 2 12 14_Matchmaking Playlist Update
ugcuserfile-c9bcf305-477c-41f3-acda-d6c6db3c06df-edead075589c0435-full

This coming Monday, something “big” is on the way: our next featured playlist, Big Rumble. The playlist offers action-packed 12-player Free-for-All for the first time in Halo 4 Matchmaking, and will be available until March 3rd. Gameplay will take place on larger maps, and all DLC from the Crimson and Castle map packs will be included in the voting options. The full list of game types are as follows.

Big Rumble Game Types
• Infinity Slayer
• Slayer Pro
• Regicide
• King of the Hill
• Oddball
• Quick Draw

Speaking of Quick Draw…
Thanks to your community votes, the playlist will be the first to feature one of Halo 4 Matchmaking’s newest game types: Quick Draw!
voting_quickdraw

A true test of the trigger, Quick Draw equips players with Magnums, Frag Grenades, and the Dexterity Support Upgrade. If you think you’ve got the fastest pistol in Matchmaking, hop into the playlist to join the action. You should also hope that you don’t run into bs angel in Quick Draw, because she’s been mercilessly beating everyone in our playlab. I call hackz.

Additionally, we’ll be slightly modifying the join-in-progress parameters for several playlists and game types come Monday. These updated parameters should provide for more optimal join-in-progress scenarios in Halo 4 Matchmaking. We thank you for your feedback, which has led to the newly optimized settings.

Lastly, if you’re still looking to master any of Halo 4’s vehicle commendations, be sure to head into the Heavies playlist before Monday. Completing the Splatter commendation will unlock the Verdant visor, mastering the Wheelman commendation will unlock the Aviator BOND helmet variant, and completing all vehicle commendations will award you the Air Assault VERG Armor. If you’ve got your eye on any of these, jump into the playlist and start doin’ some damage!

HFFL: This section has dowloadable Halo themed Valentines. I’m choosing to only show one of them, ATM. It’s of course the most inappropriate one…

Gamers for Giving Recap
gfg banner

This past weekend I (Bravo) flew over to Michigan, where they’ve had too much snowfall and it’s entirely too cold. Luckily, the snow slowed down a bit for the weekend, and hundreds of gamers from the Midwest were able to make their way to Eastern Michigan University to compete in a variety of games while contributing to a great cause. For the past few years, Gamers for Giving has been an awesome gathering of Midwest Halo players, and it’s safe to say that this year was no exception. From well-known players like Walshy and Strongside to dozens of eager competitors, the event was packed with top talent and energy for Halo 4.

The Halo 4 action kicked off with some major upsets, as professional players dropped games to up-and-coming amateur players and new names rose to the top. Halfway throughout the tournament, I started to hear murmurings about a team that hadn’t lost a game yet. That team was VwS Cryptic, a group of emerging players who made their mark on competitive Halo this weekend with a first-place victory, taking down several more decorated and veteran rosters along the way.

After the event, I had a chance to meet the team and set up an interview. I was among the many who watched this weekend and were curious about who the players on this team were and exactly how they managed to kick so much ass. Read below to learn a bit about their history and get to know the players.

Hey, guys! Congrats on the big win this weekend, and thanks so much for joining me today. Tell me, did you guys come into the tournament expecting to take first place?

Sargoth: Thank you, Bravo! We put in a lot of practice for this event and we knew, considering how we were playing online and meshing together, that we were gonna win the way we did.

Tragic: We expected to take first, you have to come into every tourney expecting to take first. Taking it in the way we did was definitely amazing.

WinntuR: We were one of the few teams that were willing to put a lot of practice going into the tournament. With our practice and experience as a team, we thought we had a solid chance of taking it all.

Cryptic-Sargoth GFG14 WIN
One of the coolest things about this weekend was the fact that I had never seen your team play together before. For those out there who haven’t seen you guys play before, tell us a little bit about when and how you got into playing Halo competitively.

Sargoth: I started playing Halo at a pretty young age when tournaments were starting to get big. There was a local MLG event and I decided to go and loved every second of it!

WinntuR: My first time competing was in Halo: Reach at Columbus 2012 where I placed 17th. It was a great experience from a competitive aspect. I then continued to compete in small Halo 4 tournaments and really enjoyed the competition.

Svspector: My Halo career started toward the end Halo 3, and I mainly played the MLG Playlist. I started to get competitive with Halo toward the middle of Reach, however I didn’t go to my first tournament until Halo 4.

Tragic: I’ve been gaming competitively since the middle of Reach. I was solid but never really put the time into it or went to tournaments. The first tournament I attended was AGL Chicago and I think my performance stood out, which helped me get onto better teams.

Before we get into the tournament itself, how did you guys come to team up with each other, and what advice would you give to skilled players who might be looking for teams but not know where to start?

Sargoth: My advice to other gamers is to just be humble to everyone you come across. You never know who will shine at the next tournament!

Svspector: WinntuR, Tragic, and I have gone to previous Halo 4 tournaments as a team, however our original fourth teammate (Nemassist) couldn’t make this event. We were running games with some other players, but nothing really clicked until we picked up Sargoth.

WinntuR: We’ve all been a part of many different teams. Eventually, when you come upon three other solid players, it’s important to realize that you may not immediately be the best team out there. However, if you can stick it out with the same players and put in the practice, the team will learn to play together, and everyone will benefit.

Tragic: Look for four players who are willing to put the time and effort into getting better as a team. It takes a lot of patience to find a good team, but once you’ve got the right group of players, it’s worth it.

Moving onto Gamers for Giving, I believe you guys only dropped two games the entire tournament. To what would you attribute the dominance?

Tragic: Honestly, we didn’t plan on losing at all because we had that much confidence in each other. We knew coming into the event our teamwork was unreal and we had the individual skill to match it. The only games we lost were two Simplex games due to map control.

WinntuR: Coming into the tournament, we actually weren’t very confident in Slayer game types but we also knew we had teamwork that not all teams can match. The Simplex games that we did lose were really close games, and minor mistakes ended up costing us those few games.

What would you say some of your best or favorite game types were this weekend?

Tragic: Unfortunately, both of our favorite game types (Dispatch CTF and Adrift CTF) got taken out. [Laughs.] The game type I enjoyed most would have to be Onyx CTF.

Sargoth: Onyx Slayer and Haven Extraction were my personal favorite game types to play with this team.

Svspector: Our best Slayer game type was Onyx due to our map control. Our best overall Objective game type was Station 9 Extraction, because of the way we rotated before each Extraction point ended and held map control throughout the game.

WinntuR: We were just overall confident in our objective gameplay on all maps.

Tragic: Honestly, we just da best at all the game types. #cryptic [Laughs.]

Outside of competitive multiplayer itself, what are some of your favorite things about Halo?

Tragic: I would say traveling and all the awesome people I’ve met.

Svspector: For me, it would have to be the tournaments. It’s amazing being able to see all the people you talk to online in real life, but also being able to travel around the world to do something you love.

Tragic: This year’s Gamers for Giving was the most fun I’ve had at a tournament so far. I love this team!

WinntuR: Meeting new people who can’t spell, like my teammates. You should see the un-spellchecked version of this interview.

Sargoth: [Laughs.] I’ve met my closest friends at Halo events, and it has changed my life in ways I can’t even explain.

Tragic: Bravo, can I ask you a question?

But of course! Nobody ever asks me questions. Shoot!

Tragic: You would be my hero if you grow your hair out again. Can you do that for me?

[Laughs.] Would doing so really make me your hero?

Tragic: Yes.

Then you got it.

WinntuR: While we’re off topic … to be honest, I really want to compete in Peggle.

Peggle was pretty incredible this weekend. Who’s the best Peggler on the team?

Tragic: WinntuR, of course.

Svspector: Me.

Sargoth: Me.

WinntuR: No competition here.

Thanks again for joining me, guys, and also for contributing to Gamers for Giving this weekend. We all had a blast watching you play. Congrats again on winning the tournament, and enjoy your Deadeye helmet and FOTUS armor!

Thanks again for joining me, guys, and also for contributing to Gamers for Giving this weekend. We all had a blast watching you play. Congrats again on winning the tournament, and enjoy your Deadeye helmet and FOTUS armor!

Sargoth: No problem, Bravo. Thank you so much for taking your time to be with us!

Tragic: Thank you! It was a blast competing this weekend.

Svspector: Thanks for having us here, Bravo. It was fantastic being able to support GFG and everything that they do while playing the game that we love!

WinntuR: Had an amazing time this weekend, the event was run very well. Thanks for having us!

Sarah Palmer done in retro style

This is the third of my wife’s retro styled (think Jetsons cartoon) Halo characters series.

retro-palmer FIN_sm

I really like how this one turned out. She did all the design. I just asked for a few color changes to reflect more of her character. Note the teal nearly surrounding her face. That was a changed I asked for as it’s closer to her visor color. As well, the background went from being a plum color to the silver you see now. Again this is indicative of her armor.

I definitely think my wife got just the right amount of attitude in Palmer’s look.

If you want to repost the graphic, please give my wife credit it your post as “Emily from HaloFanForLife.com”.
