HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #7 Crawler

Is it day 7 already? Wow…. Now I’m wishing I made more of these! Well, there are still 7 more reveals, though only 5 days left of showing them as I’m revealing the last three on the 12th day of this Halo minimalist art project.

Yesterdays sneak peek should have been pretty easy to guess based on the appendages. Why it’s a Crawler of course!

Minimalist Alpha Crawler_sm

I went back and forth with this one. I had got it down to 5 colors, but it was looking a bit washed out. TOO minimalist, if you ask me. So I put in two more colors and BAM, it popped out more. I realize this may not look as minimalist as some of the others.

Here is the first one I did of this with less colors:

Minimalist Alpha Crawler_sm v2

So which do you prefer? The more detailed, more color version? Or, the less detailed, less color version?

The preview for day 8 is definitely a bit fuzzy, intentionally. Do you have a guess as to who, what it is?

day 8 blackened

I have to say that I’ve been enjoying showing these to you all, even if in low-resolution. Again, the reason for them being so lo-res is so that if someone else tries to “steal” the artwork for themselves and post it elsewhere, they’ve only got the lo-res version. I don’t mind if people share, but many won’t give proper credit, not link back to the original site they found the art. So I’m curtailing that as much as possible here. As I mentioned, the hi-resolution versions of these will be made available  (of a sorts) after all have been revealed.

Are you liking this series so far? What has been your favorite? Any guesses as to who/what may be in the rest of the series?

A bigger version of this and all of the other minimalist pieces will be available after they’ve all been shown. Stay tuned for more details on that.

I recreated these in Adobe Illustrator using some fun techniques and refining some of the shapes. I tried to use as few colors as possible yet show enough detail so that each character was instantly recognizable.

Spartan Assault Beginner’s Tips

Halo Spartan Assault Small logo

The following is a direct copy/paste of Prima Game’s beginner’s tips:

Weapons
When you first begin Halo: Spartan Assault, you receive a pair of weapons – an assault rifle and a pistol. Over the course of the game, you’ll have access to your loadout, so you can switch to other weapons like the shotgun, Spartan Laser and others. You can also pick up weapons left over from Covenant aliens, such as a plasma pistol and rifle, just as you could in the classic Halo game.

When it comes to weapon management, remember that you don’t need to use your assault rifle right away. Your pistol is quite handy for taking down smaller Covenant soldiers, allowing you to conserve the ammunition in the rifle for bigger enemies. Use your shots sparingly, and be on the lookout for ammunition to refill in case you begin to run low. You can usually find it around the center of each stage, or near your Spartan base.

As for picking up Covenant weaponry, the Plasma Repeater and Needler are your best bets. They carry more ammunition than your typical pistol, and give off better firing capacity in general. Still, if you’re almost out of ammunition, beggers can’t be choosers. Pick up whatever you can find and stay in the fight.

Vehicles
As the game progresses, you’ll have the opportunity to hop into vehicles, such as the Ghost, Pelican or Wraith – which will definitely be familiar to fans of the series. It’s a must to hop into these and use them whenever you can. Not only do they provide better firepower than you’d find in your typical weaponry, but also superior durability. These things can take several hits before they blow up, and do massive damage against enemy vehicles that stand in your way. Watch your driving and lay down the firepower every chance you get.

Bigger “tank”-like vehicles have better firepower, but also move slower, so be prepared. Smaller ones don’t really hit as hard, but offer better maneuverability, letting you get around a level easier and run over small enemies. Choose accordingly based on your style of play, and go on your run.

In addition, keep an eye on your vehicle’s energy meter, which appears right above it. If it gets down to about two or three clicks, it’s almost done. You’ll want to jump out and make a run for it, even if there’s the possibility of being under fire from enemies. It sure beats being blown to bits.

Turrets
When it comes to overcoming a turret, don’t waste your time trying to remove an enemy with a grenade or firepower. Instead, stay out of their sights and get close, then simply climb up and throw them out. This not only lets you conserve ammo, but also avoids taking unnecessary damage.

Once you’re in the turret, you can go to town on any targets within your firing range. While they’re limited compared to moving vehicles, they provide a temporary assault on any Covenant enemies rampaging into the area. If you see these, don’t hesitate to stop and use them.

Grenades
Along with your assault rifle and pistol, you’ll have access to a few grenades. These are useful if you’re taking on a vehicle while on foot, or clearing out enemies that you can’t necessarily get to with your main weapons. You’ll be able to aim your trajectory by using the right analog stick and tapping the shoulder button. You’ve only got a few on hand (until you refill, that is), so use them wisely. Remember, don’t blow yourself up!

Shield
As with the original Halo games, you have an energy shield that recharges should you take any gunfire damage from enemies. If you find yourself running low on shield, run out of the area and get yourself to cover as soon as you can. Once your shield is gone, you’ll be vulnerable, and could be killed with the next incoming attack from enemies.

The shield only takes a few seconds to recharge, so be patient. While you’re recharging, try to make a dash for whatever ammunition refills are in the area. Conserve your time while you wait, particularly with base defense missions. It’ll pay off once you’re back to full strength.

Playing Defense
Finally, when it comes to defending a point on the map, such as a base or a convoy, keep an eye on your heads-up display to see where enemies pop up. Position yourself in a good spot where you can take out Covenant soldiers in a hurry, but don’t let what you’re protecting get overrun. Clean up the current area, then move back behind your allies, as that’s likely to be where your enemies will strike next. It’s a bit tougher on your own than with others in co-op mode, but if you’re quick enough, you’ll be able to clean house without losing one of your objectives. Keep at it.

Prima promises more advanced and co-op tips later this week. When they post them up, I’ll post them here for you.

HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #6 Promethean Knight

We’re up to day 6 now. Man, these days are flying by FAST!

You probably guessed what today’s art piece was from the large “winged” back on the blacked out preview from yesterday. Yep, it’s a Promethean Knight!

Minimalist Knight_sm

I got this one done in 6 color, yet there is a lot of detail. It was important for me to get just enough of the orange and yellow detail in there to give some vibrance to the Knight who would have otherwise been just greys and black.

Here’s the preview of the day 7 character. Can you guess what it is? I don’t think it takes much guess work for this one, LOL.

A bigger version of this and all of the other minimalist pieces will be available after they’ve all been shown. Stay tuned for more details on that.

Halo Mega Bloks Mini Scarab custom!

Hello folks. I came across this custom on one of the Mega Bloks fan forums (apologies I can’t remember which one, ATM). It’s done by GoodWillHunter, of whom I interviewed here on the blog previously.

This is his take on a scarab in miniature form, ala the new line of Halo mini Mega Bloks coming to stores soon.

Mini Scarab front 3-4Here he uses a Halo mini fig for scale. So as you can see, it is indeed an even smaller version of a scarab and not to scale with the minifigs themselves.

Mini Scarab sideHere’s the side view. I love that he made use of the new style joint system. That was first introduce with the Mantis set (which I reviewed here).

Mini Scarab BackGWH (as we sometimes call him), even incorporated a detachable back piece to show the Scarab’s vulnerable core. That’s EXCELLENT detail!

And lastly, the pic below shows the mini Scarab with GWH’s other custom Scarab, that one to scale with the minifigs.

Mini Scarab comparisonI tell you, Mega Bloks really needs to hire this guy. His designs are awesome and inspiring!

Oh and just incase you want to see yet more of his mini Scarab, here’s his video of it!

Great stuff!

HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #5 Hunter

Well, we’re halfway through with today’s posting of my Halo minimalist art series. It’s day 5. Did you guess who the character would be?

As I’m sure you could tell from those large spiky things, it is of course an imposing HUNTER!

Minimalist Hunter_sm

I had to go a little bit more with color here, since the hunter has that fuel rod cannon array on it’s left “arm”. So this one has 7 colors. The lightest blue I could have maybe exchanged for the darker blue, but it just didn’t look right when I tried it. I felt the added highlighting helped, so I kept it in.

Here’s the preview of the day 6 character. Can you guess what it is?

HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #4 Grunt

This is the fourth of a series of 14 minimalist artwork of Halo characters. I recreated these in Adobe Illustrator using some fun techniques and refining some of the shapes. I tried to use as few colors as possible yet show enough detail so that each character was instantly recognizable.

So did you guess who the fourth day’s character would be? It’s a Grunty GRUNT!!

Minimalist Storm Grunt_sm

I was able to get this done with only 5 colors.

A bigger version of this and all of the other minimalist pieces will be available after they’ve all been shown. Stay tuned for more details on that.

Here’s the preview of the day 5 character. Can you guess who it is? Kind of easy from the silhouette huh?

HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #3 Storm Elite

Here is the second of a series of 14 minimalist artwork of Halo characters. I recreated these in Adobe Illustrator using some fun techniques and refining some of the shapes. I tried to use as few colors as possible yet show enough detail so that each character was instantly recognizable.

So did you guess who the third day’s character would be? It’s a fearsome Storm Elite!

Minimalist Storm Elite_sm

I used 6 colors for this particular character. While I did try to take this to only 5 colors, it just wasn’t looking right. I’d lose too much detail. So I stuck with 6 colors and I think it came out pretty good.

A bigger version of this and all of the other minimalist pieces will be available after they’ve all been shown. Stay tuned for more details on that.

Here’s the preview of the day 4 character. Can you guess who it is? Kind of easy from the silhouette huh?

Whew, okay, I’m caught up now. Hopefully I’ll stay on track for the rest of them!

HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #2 Cortana

Here is the second of a series of 14 minimalist artwork of Halo characters. I recreated these in Adobe Illustrator using some fun techniques and refining some of the shapes. I tried to use as few colors as possible yet show enough detail so that each character was instantly recognizable.

So did you guess who the second day’s character would be? Why it’s Cortana of course, everyone’s favorite Halo Smart A.I.!

Minimalist Cortana_sm

As with Master Chief, I only used 5 colors to flesh the lovely Cortana out.

A bigger version of this and all of the other minimalist pieces will be available after they’ve all been shown. Stay tuned for more details on that.

In the meantime, here’s a preview of the day 3 characte. Can you guess who it is? It’s pretty easy….

Since I’m already a day behind….you’re going to get this character later today, so I can catch myself up.

HaloFanForLife’s Minimalist Halo Characters: #1 Master Chief

This is the first in a series of 14 minimalist artwork of Halo characters. I recreated these in Adobe Illustrator using some fun techniques and refining some of the shapes. I tried to use as few colors as possible yet show enough detail so that each character was instantly recognizable.

So then, who better than to kick off this art project than the Master himself, Master Chief!

Minimalist Master Chief_sm

In the case of Chief here, I only used 5 colors to flesh him out.

A bigger version of this and all of the other minimalist pieces will be available after they’ve all been shown. Stay tuned for more details on that.

p.s. I would have had this up sooner, but had hurt my back (again), so that’s why it’s being posted so late…
