Toy PRE-view: Mega Bloks Halo UNSC Hornet vs. Covenant Vampire

MB grey logo

Coming to major retail stores like Wal*Mart, Target, and Toys R Us is the Mega Bloks Halo UNSC Hornet vs. Covenant Vampire. Both have been released before, but never together. If I’m correct, these are both revised builds from the previous releases.

Hornet vs Vampire

The set includes:
• Buildable UNSC Hornet with in-game lights and sound
• Buildable Covenant Vampire
• UNSC Troops: Spartan in Recruit maroon, Spartan in Engineer green, Spartan in Soldier green
• Covenant Troops: Elite Storm in copper, Grunt Storm in copper, Elite Zealot in silver

Here’s the toy description: The UNSC Hornet is a versatile UNSC aircraft with a nose-mounted heavy auto cannon. The sound of the Hornet turbines roar to life as two Spartans prepare for take-off. Engage the heavily armed Vampire and strafe its Covenant assault unit with the new UNSC Hornet, now with motion-activated lights and authentic in-game sounds!

Getting SIX figures in a set is always cool. Three being Spartans? Better yet! I like that we also get a Storm Grunt, Copper Storm Elite and a Zealot Elite (especially that it’s in silver). I don’t really have a need for another Vampire though. Personally, I’d rather have had the Covenant Sniper tower instead with a Jackal or two. Still, for those who never got the Vampire (which was only previously available in the ODST Scorpion/Vampire set), then this is a good alternative.

Toy Review: Mega Bloks UNSC Ammo Pack I

My wife and I were out today for a memorial day drive. (I being in the Navy formerly.) She decided to take me for a drive and a very informal dinner at Micky D’s. We stopped by a Wal*Mart and I found this. She bought it for me, “for Memorial Day.” Isn’t she a peach!

UNSC Ammo Pack I: Set # 97037

Minifigs: Halo 4 style Marine, full goggles (Black/grey deco)
Weapons: Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, Rocket Launcher, 2X Frag Grenades

And on with the pics! (Click to make bigger)

97037 UNSC Ammo Pack I BOX
Sorry about the flash there. I like these ammo packs. Compact enough and you get to see almost everything that comes with the set through the “window.”97037 UNSC Ammo Pack I BOX back97037 UNSC Ammo Pack I ContentsAbove shows you everything that comes in the box. The bag is hidden from view. When you open the box, it’s within a white cardboard sheath at the bottom of the box.97037 UNSC Ammo Pack I TrayAll the stuff that was in the tray. I really like that the weapons are painted in this set. Plain black or grey weapons are just that, plain.97037 UNSC Ammo Pack I BagAbove shows the contents of the bag. To note you get a traffic cone, which has been a source of humor and frustration for years in Matchmaking. Getting a kill with a cone or being killed by one is always film clip worthy! I also like the small baseplate. It can be placed along side larger ones seamlessly. (I’ll try to get a pic of that up later.)97037 UNSC Ammo Pack I FinalFinally, here is the complete set built. Not much to building this. The Rocket Launcher is too large to place in one of the holes as the set is built, though you can easily reconfigure this to accommodate that if you so choose.

Summary: The set is quick to build and can be displayed nearly anywhere. The weapons are better than average due to being painted. The figure is excellent even though it’s mostly an overall black/grey deco. There is just enough variation in the paint application on it. The cone is a nice little addition and the baseplate is good.

So is this worth $6? (I got mine at Wal*Mart for $6, I think it’s $7 at TRU) I have to say a resounding YES. Think of it this way, were you to get one of those blind pack minifigs, you’d get a fig, one weapon and either one blok or plate to stand it one. So for the additional $3 for this set you get 2 more weapons, 2 frag grenades, several blok and tile pieces and a very cool baseplate. Were you to compare the cost at custom minifig weapon sites, you’d easily pay $1 for each of the weapons, so that’s $2 of the $3 right there. For that last dollar you get the nades, baseplate, and bloks. Oh…AND THE CONE!

Yeah, this set is WORTH IT!

Overall Rating: I give this set 10 out of 10 medals. For the price, you’re getting a nice set. I definitely recommend getting it. No complaints what-so-ever!

Toy PRE-view: Mega Bloks Halo UNSC Pelican Gunship

MB grey logo

Coming to major retail stores like Wal*Mart, Target, and Toys R Us is the ELECTRONIC Pelican. YES, I said electronic!

Pelican

The set includes:
Buildable UNSC Pelican Gunship with in-game lights and sound
Promethean Knight Battlewagon that lights up just like in Halo 4, w/Binary Rifle
UNSC Troops: Spartan Operator Covert Ops (Steel blue color), Spartan Pathfinder Covert Ops (Steel Blue color), Spartan Scout Silver (This one could be a stand in for Spartan Commander Sarah Palmer!) The two Covert Ops Spartans can easily stand in for Spartan Hoya and Spartan Grant of Fireteam Majestic from Halo 4’s Spartan Ops!!! (Now here’s hoping we get the other three from that team.)
Weapons: Shotgun, DMR, M6D Pistol x2, Frag Grenade x2, M6C Socom x2

Here’s the toy description: The Pelican Gunship is a multipurpose space-to-surface UNSC gunship with a new sleek design and enhanced weapons. The Mega Bloks version of the UNSC Pelican Gunship now includes light-up auto cannons, in-game sounds and comes with a light-up Knight Battlewagon figure! With an opening hatch for interior play, hidden weapon compartments and dual opening cockpits, the Mega Bloks UNSC Pelican Gunship lets kids build the battle like never before!

Dimensions in Inches: 24.0L x 30.0W x 14.0H (I think the width listing is incorrect. I just copy/pasted it here)

There’s all sorts of cool stuff going on with this set. Not only does the Battlewagon Knight light up (which is AWESOME), but the Pelican itself has sounds and the forward guns rotate. There’s plenty of other moveable parts on the ship like the dual cockpits, wings, etc. I’m excited to see this set! The Pelican is one of my all-time favorite vehicles/ships in Halo.

Toy PRE-view: Mega Bloks Halo UNSC ONI REAP-X Light Assault VTOL

MB grey logo

Coming to major retail stores like Wal*Mart, Target, and Toys R Us is one of Mega Bloks new Halo sub-line. This is the REAP-X Light Assault Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL).

REAP-X VTOL

The set includes:
• Buildable ONI REAP-X Light Assault VTOL
• UNSC Spartan in MK VI navy blue with DMR
• Covenant Jackal w/Yellow energy shield and Beam Rifle

Here’s the toy description:
The UNSC Light Assault VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) craft is a heavily armed, full mobility combat flier designed to operate in confined environments. It has three turbines that allow the vehicle to quickly and deftly navigate narrow spaces. Below its flanking turbines hang twin autocannons (GAU-10/A HAC) and a pair of rocket pods (M302 Class-1 GMLS), both of which are extremely competent arsenals when providing ground support or engaging in air-to-air combat.

Dimensions in Inches: 12.0L x 2.0W x 11.5H

I’m very happy that this set has the Halo 4 style Jackal. The red visor on the Spartan throws me off a bit as it’s the first Spartan mini fig to have a red visor. Then again, this is a sub-line, so some liberties have been taken and that visor color is in Halo 4.
I for one am excited to see what else this sub-line is going to bring us. New and fantastical designs. Will these be part of a new game? Perhaps part of the newly announced Halo TV show for XBOX One? Regardless, look for this and other REAP-X MEGA BLOKS Halo toys soon!

Halo Mega Bloks series 7 insert sheet!

I was able to get my “hands” on a virtual file of the insert sheet (thanks to sharkfinboy1-a fellow MB collector).

I reported just Friday an article of the  “Halo Mega Bloks Series 7 blind pack preview“. Glad to see I was indeed correct in my preview.

Anyway,  without further ado, here’s the insert sheet believed to be coming with the minifigs (click to make bigger):

Halo Series 7 Commonality sheet

I’m VERY agreeable with which ones are common, rare, and very rare. Mind you this sheet doesn’t show the four translucent minifigs.

Happy hunting! Oh and when you find them, snap a pic and send it to me at sal@halofanforlife.com and I’ll share it here on the blog!

Halo Mega Bloks Series 7 blind pack preview

MB grey logo
As was revealed at Toy Fair in Febraury, we will soon see the next series of Halo Mega Bloks blind packaged minifigs. This series doesn’t contain the normal 8 figure count. Nor does it contain 3 translucent figures. Nope…It contains a WHOPPING 16 minifigs AND 4 translucent minifigs. That’s a total of TWENTY minifigs in one series!

Below is a pic I compiled of all 20 minifigs to come in this series. After which, I’ll give my own thoughts on each minifig. I’m going to start left to right, top to bottom…however, saving the translucent figured until the end.

Halo MB s7-wTransFigs
Top Row:
Standard Marine with full goggles: Okay, I’m ALWAYS up for more marines. This figure is great for army building. It comes with an Assault Rifle
Desert ODST: OMG, YES! Another figure worthy of army building. Now we get the ODST in what looks to be a desert paint deco. If it’s white, that cool too. Comes with Assault Rifle.
Black Armored Halo 4 style Marine: OH YEAH! Now I might now have to try and buy multiples of the more expensive Weapons Ammo set. Another good army builder! Comes with…Is that a Railgun!
Black (or is it grey) Spartan Mark 5 [ b ]: I’m pretty sure collectors are going to start calling this “Not-Noble 6.” So let me be the first here. This is certainly a welcomed minifig. I’d love to have the completed Noble Team someday and this is another step towards that. To note, this fig comes with a crimson Plasma Rifle. This can said to be a Brute Plasma Rifle. YES!

Second Row:
Yellow EOD Spartan: I’m not so much a fan of yellow painted Spartans. However, I AM a fan of the EOD helmet. So it’s a welcome addition, IMO. Hard to tell what this one comes with from this pic. Sorry.
White Scout Spartan: The Scout is cool. I like the helmet. This one if crafted to look more like the Halo 4 Scout could be a good one for customizing into Spartan Commander Sarah Palmer. Comes with an Assault Rifle.
Silver Security Spartan: I really like silver painted Spartans. Though I’m not a huge fan of the bug visor Security helmet. Still, it’s a welcome addition. Comes with what looks to be a Brute Mauler.
Grey CQB Spartan: Oh yeah! One of my favorite helmets. Though, IIRC, we already have a grey CQB from a previous set. Not sure, but is that a sentinel beam in it’s hands? If so, AWESOME!

Third Row:
Yellow Grunt: Grunts grunts and MORE grunts! I love ’em Keep them coming! Yellow isn’t really an in-game color (with exception to Halo Wars). So I’ll have to treat this as a commander grunt. Comes with a crimson not-accurate needler.
Green Grunt: See above, just switch out the color for green. Though green is closer to an in-game color which was closer to teal-green.
Dark Blue? Reach Style Grunt Major: I’m VERY glad to see Reach style Grunts come back. This one looks to be a Dark Blue variant. Comes with purple plasma pistol. (When is MEGA going to make game accurate dark blue plasma rifles?)
Blue Mark VI Halo 4 style Spartan: YES! If you’re looking for TEAM color spartans, this is one of them! Comes with a light grey Railgun.

Fourth Row:
Human Flood: I already have more of these than I really need. Still for those who don’t have enough or even one, I’m glad it’s in this series for you. Comes with an Assault Rifle.
Purple Ascetic Elite: Dark purple. And a Carbine. The Ascetic Elite is my favorite armor design for Elites from Halo 3.
Violet Zealot Elite: This Elite is decidedly different in color from the Purple one. I’m VERY glad to have yet more Zealots make an appearance in the minifig line. Comes with it’s own violet colored Carbine.
Crimson Jump Pack Brute: VERY cool color! If you have the Crimson Brute Prowler (exclusive to Wal*Mart), then you already know how cool the brute look in this color deco. This one comes with a black Mauler.

Now we get to the four that I am MOST looking forward to. As you long time readers know, I LOVE translucent toys. I just love seeing how they are put together. Even minifigs such as these are awesome, in my book! Of course, these are going to be the VERY hard to find ones…

Translucent minifigs:
Green Marine: Well, at least I THINK it’s a marine from the pic. Lean Green Translucent Marine! Possibly has a shotgun.
Orange Elite Minor Halo 4 style: Okay, now THIS color is VERY different. It’s the first time we’ve had an orange translucent color minifig. I’m looking forward to it. Comes with a needler.
Gold Spartan Mark VI Halo 4 style: Could be yellow, but looks more gold in color. The weapon included looks to be the DMR. VERY cool fig, IMO.
Blue Zealot Elite: This one, to me is the GEM of the bunch. Why? Well, it just LOOKS like an Elite coming out of active camo. It being a new Halo 4 style Elite Zealot just makes it that much more AWESOME! Comes with a needler.

Mega Bloks Full size Promethean Knight – follow up!

This is a follow up with some new pics to the article I posted the other day of the Mega Bloks full size Promethean Knight.

Mega Bloks posted on Facebook that, “We are putting together a giant build of a Halo Knight to be displayed at San Diego Comic Con in July.”

Here are a few new pics from that build:

Pro-headOkay technically this is a cut down version of the head shot from the other day…

Pro-swordWow! Would you look at that SWEET sword! That is a thing of BEAUTY!

Pro-ScattershotSo is this amazing Scattershot!!!

Pro-leg
Here’s part of the leg assembly. As you can see it has an inner metal core to keep it stable.  It’s going to need that too, considering the massive torso, arms, etc., that is to come.

Pro-wingHere’s just ONE of the wing assemblies.

Wow, this is going to be a HUGE set. Simply awe inspiring.

Toy Review: Kai Arts Halo 4 Master Chief

First I want to say thank goodness for tax refunds. I ordered this back in February and it finally got to me yesterday. I have the Sarah Palmer one paid for and waiting for it to arrive too, again paid for with part of the tax refund.

Okay now that that’s done, let’s get on to the review:Kai Logo

I want to be straight up here and say that initially I had no desire to collect this line. There are a few reasons.
1. Fairly expensive: In comparison to McFarlane Halo figures these are about 5X as much. On average McFarlane Halo figures cost $13-15. This Kai Arts (also referred to as Play Arts) figure was a whopping $65 (not including shipping).
2. Not a fan of the slim waistline: It’s one of the biggest reasons I didn’t go for the other figures. I don’t like it when companies choose to use their interpretation when they can easily recreate the character exactly as it is. (Mega Bloks does not count here for instance as they have to really size down their figures.)
3. Exclusivity: There aren’t many figures to this line as it is and several of them were exclusives. I really REALLY hate toy lines that do that. Exclusives to stores, fine. That may make it a little hard for some collectors, but certainly not as hard as trying to get Convention exclusives.

So then, you’re probably asking me, “Why the hell did you get this then?”

I had to really consider buying any from this line. Knowing I’d never have one of each, I had to draw the line somewhere. So I decided to get ONLY Halo 4 Campaign/Spartan Ops figures. I had seen pics of the Halo 4 Master Chief and it actually looked pretty darn good even with the slimmer waistline. Palmer I wasn’t so concerned about since she’s a female character and I can tolerate the slimmer waistline on her due to that.

So yeah, that means I had to pass on the Halo CE Master Chief, the Gold MC, and pretty much all the rest. I had thought about Noble team, but again, these figs are expensive. The waistlines on those characters really take away from them, with exception to Kat, again with her being a female character.

Okay, enough justification, let’s move on to the actual toy review…KA MC Box FrontThe box this comes in is very nice. Some great graphics and they all make sense.KA MC Box sides-backTake a look at these shots put side by side. You can see that the sides wrap around with the front to make a larger image. The back of the box depicts Master Chief in certain poses with weapons. KA MC Box opened flapWhat’s great about the box is that if you keep your stuff in the box, there is this nice flap that is velcroed on that you can open to show the figure, yet keep it minty fresh inside.

Of course, I’m not a mint in box kind of guy (though this one I did put back in the box for the time being). So here are some shots of the contents and the figure and weapons outside of the box.KA MC ContentsWhen you slide out the contents, you get this. It’s a clear tray over a black tray that holds the figure, weapons, and extra pair of hands in place. It’s a nice way to have them displayed inside the box.

Behind that you find what’s below. It’s a cardboard sleeve that also has a bubble glued onto it that holds the figure’s stand in place.KA MC Contents-standAs you can see by the pic (and yes, I photoshopped the hell out of the background), the directions are easy to see and follow. I have NO plans on using this stand. Though I won’t get rid of it either, as you never know… For now it’s back in the box with the figure.

But before I put it back in there, here’s the figure as promised (click to make pic bigger): KA MC Articulated viewsSorry about the high contrast/flash here.

The figure has some pretty good articulation. Ball joints abound everywhere. One thing to note is that the cod piece and hip area is actually a separate piece that sits in place. It’s moveable, but not particularly positionable. The detail on this figure is amazing as is the paint job. The only issue I really have here is that the ball joints aren’t hidden as well as they could have been. It can be distracting specifically at the shoulder area.

KA MC detail-weapons viewsIn the shot above you see how the pistol can attach to the leg. There is also a peg hole in the back for the Assault Rifle. Note the pegs sticking out of the weapons in the bottom right of the above pic. Also, this set comes with another set of hands.

The figure as it is in the package has the more open hands attached to it. This makes it easy to have Chief hold the AR. The extra hands are for holding the Plasma Pistol. Technically you could have Chief dual wield the weapons with the AR in his right hand and the Plasma Pistol in his right. I do think that a frag and/or plasma grenade should have been included with this set. Either to have chief hold in his left hand or to clip onto the left leg. Opportunity missed. Perhaps I’ll custom one…. (likely not).

Okay so there you have it.

What are my final observations on this?

It’s a good figure with superb articulation, excellent sculpting and paint application. It’s presented VERY well in the box. The slimmer waist isn’t as noticeable on this figure as it was in earlier figures from this toy line, so that is a plus in my book. The only thing that detracts from this then is the price. While I do appreciate the extra set of hands, a grenade or two would have helped give more of the appearance of worth. When you compare this to the McFarlane figure, visually it’s better, though only marginally. So again the price is the real issue here. Is it really worth $65 (plus shipping)?

Unfortunately, I have to say no. However, given the rather exclusivity of these figs and that they aren’t as easy to find at brick and mortar stores, therefore making it more of a collectible piece, the price is slightly more justified. Personally, I think the price of this line of figures should be at $35-40 and no more.

So should YOU buy it? Well that’s going to depend on a few things.
Do you mind the slimmer, somewhat out of proportion waist?
Do you mind paying 5X as much for this than say a McFarlane Halo figure?
Are you buying this to keep in package or will you have your kids play with it?

Answer those questions and I think you can come to your own conclusion. Am I happy with the purchase? Well, I don’t have buyers remorse. So that’s a good thing. Though I do think it’s priced more than it’s worth. I can only hope these figures gain value. Though, I’m not in this to resell figures later. I collect to collect.

Articulation: 9 of 10 medals
Paint Application: 9 of 10 medals
Sculpt: 8.5 of 10 medals
Accessories: 8 of 10 medals (include more please  if you’re going to ask that much for these sets)
Overall rating: 8.5 medals of 10

UPDATE

I figured since I mentioned the McFarlane figure a few times within this review that I should show a comparison shot of it and the Kai Arts figure. Click to make bigger.

Kai Arts MC-McF MCOkay, so now seeing the two side by side, you’d think I’d change my position on the cost issue. Well, partially. See, this isn’t quite 12 inches tall. I can get a fully articulated Star Wars figure from Sideshow collectibles for around $50-55 (yes more for certain characters). Anyway, those figures come LOADED with extras. Their sculpt is great as is the articulation and paint application. So adding this comparison as well and the Kai fig not having a bunch of extras, I’ll place it’s worth at $45. Better than the $35-40 I said above.

McFarlane had a 12 inch figure of Master Chief a few years back. Sadly it didn’t sell well at retail. It was VERY well priced at IIRC $30. That was much bigger than this figure and had decent sculpting, though not as great articulation.

So take all this updated info for what it’s worth to help you determine if you are considering buying this figure.

Oh! And if you do, PLEASE send me a photo. I’ll be more than happy to post it up on the blog!

Mega Bloks HUGE Promethean Knight head!

My friend and Vice President of Mega Brands (parent to it’s Mega Bloks division) posted the following pic on Twitter of Mega Bloks next huge build:

Promethean Knight Mega Bloks head

Wow, this is just the head. Imagine how big the whole knight is going to be when finished?

Personally, I’d LOVE to see just this come out as a set to buy. I’m sure it would be expensive, but wow what a set to own huh?

Halo Mega Bloks custom: Covenant Gorgon

The Gorgon was a vehicle in concept for Halo Wars. Hmm, looking at it now, it would have been great to have in Halo 4. Instead of being an Anti-Air mech, it could have gone against the Mantis. Imagine epic battles in Multiplayer.

Halo Mega Bloks customizer starhunter shows us his version of this mech.

Covenant GorgonCovenant Gorgon DetailThe white fins at the top are glow-in-the-dark. Pretty cool. Again, this is something I’d have LOVE to have seen in Halo 4.

Thanks to starhunter for permission to repost his pics.
