In the interest of transparency, I received this set from 343 as part of a package for my LAN last summer (2017). After I built the set, it was given away as a prize at the LAN.
And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER)
The fours sides of the box show the sets twice, an in-game helmet and other Kubros in this series.
When you open the box, you’re welcomed to some neat graphics within.
Here are the contents of the box. An instruction manual and 5 bags of parts.
Everything sorted out, ready to build!
The theme of the Kubros line is that the character has a relatively cubed head. Below, the Recon helmet fits this theme well. Of course some liberties were taken. Again though, given this is a specific theme, I’m cool with that.
The body comes together pretty easily. The back thrusters did pop off a couple of times while I was completing the build, but otherwise, no issues.
The arms are short little things that when connected to the body swivel at the shoulder.
Here’s the buildable sniper. They aren’t meant to be game accurate. It’s a stylized set. So again, I’m cool with that. There’s enough representation here of the sniper for me.
Orthogonal views of the set, sans sniper.
I had a few extra pieces left over. (This is typical of Mega, so no worries folks!)
A partil top down view of the helmet reveals a few details.
And the full set in “action pose” (baseplates not included).
Summary: This set is a short build that can be done over a lunch hour. It’s a stylized version with it’s own look. Ease of building makes it great for just about any age kid/collector. The package calls for ages 10 and up.
Overall Rating: I give this set 8.5 out for 10 medals.
Why did I give it a 8.5 out of 10?
• The limited detail is one of two things that keeps this from being a 10.
• The other being limited articulation.
Let me break down my opinion of the value of this set. (In US dollars)
• The set piece count is 153. The collector guideline of 10 cents per piece would put this at $15.30 US.
TOTAL: $15 (before tax and in U.S. dollars)
Given that the set cost $15 U.S. before tax, the set is right on par with value. You can however find these and many of the other Kubros sets for $10 or less if you wait a little. Since they are stylized versions of characters, it speaks to a specific crowd.
Do I recommend it? If you like stylized characters, sure. If you like the Spartan Recon Armor, then yeah.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of stylized figures of any brand. This is of no fault to Mega. They did a good job here. It’s just my personal preference.
