And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER)
The front of the package shows the set in a fun action shot. The back displays the action feature as well as alternate build.
In the box you get an instruction manual, 2 MCX bags and 4 figure bags.
Here are all the pieces sorted out. Note the new multitool. As well, bottom right corner is a new piece. This acts as the main body piece of the mongoose. Those grooves are for the axle pieces also new to this set. The axle pieces can be see at left middle with the tiny ball in the middle of them.
Okay, let’s get into the build!
You start by adding pieces tp the main strut. Then build up the front armor section, then add both the front and rear seats.
Next we add the axle pieces. In the instructions it says to add the wheels too. For the purposes of this review, I wanted to specifically show just the axle pieces and how they connect. The ball is inserted in between the grooves of the main strut. This locks the axle into place. However, there is plenty of room for it to wiggle, which allows for some cool suspension and turning of the wheels!
Let’s take a look at the figures in this set!
Grunt Minor I REALLY like this version of Grunt. Traditional and I like the skin color. Great army builder!
Orthogonal views of the Grunt Minor
Elite Minor: Another fantastic army builder. This is the penultimate Elite Minor, IMO!
Orthogonal views of the Elite
UNSC Marine (Brown skin): Yet one MORE army builder! The only difference between this and the other marine is the skin color and that this one has shoulder armor.
Ortho views of this marine. Inset is shown the Marine’s head without the helmet. This head is standard with most Marines. The main difference is either skin color or facial hair printed on.
UNSC Marine w/Goatee: I’m only showing an action shot and insert here, because again, it’s the same figure as the other, sans shoulder armor.
Will the marines survive this encounter?
Thankfully these are friendly aliens.
Okay, now let’s have a look at the alternate build for this set.
You need to either download the app for your smart device OR you can go to the website and follow the interactive directions there. Below is a screenshot from the website.
You choose between directions for building the figures or the alternate speeder build.
There are 9 simple steps for the alternate build. I’m only showing the first and last here.
Below shows the speeder in real life as compared to the above pic from the app.
Now this is a good alternate build. There are a few leftover parts. Apologies, I didn’t take a pic of those. However, I did want to incorporate those into this alt build. So I did!
First I moved the seat one stud forward. This allows for the figure to be more snug in the seat, which I prefer. The small curved sloped parts that were extras are now put into the build next to they’re slightly longer counterparts.
I like my version of the alt build. It’s very close to Mega’s version. It’s just that it includes ALL the parts so you don’t lose any.
Summary: The set’s build time is VERY short and can be done in one sitting, easily. A new axle/suspension system really adds maneuverability and playability to the Mongoose. FOUR figures, all of which are army builders really add great to the value of this set.
Overall Rating: I give this set 10 out of 10 medals.
Why did I give it a 10 out of 10?
• The only minor thing with issue I have are that the axles look a bit bland. But the play factor definitely outweighs that. So no points off.
Here’s my opinion on the break down of the value of this set. (In US dollars)
• The Warthog I place at $8 given it contains nearly all the parts of the set..
• Each figure with weapon and stand I put at $4 each for a total of $12.
TOTAL: $20 (before tax and in U.S. dollars)
Given that the set costs $20 US before tax, I find this set to be right on par with the piece count and figures included.
Do I recommend it? Absolutely! I’m ecstatic that this set has all army builder. This is a GREAT way to build up BOTH your UNSC Marines as well as Covenant armies. This was a multiple purchase for me. In fact, I bought three of this set so far!
