Halo Spartan Assault Soundtrack: A song by song review.

Halo Spartan Assault Logo

This review comes from me as a person who has not played the game as yet. In this respect, I am solely reviewing the music and not its relation to corresponding missions. You will find that many of the songs have recurring themes and I make note of that throughout this review.

1. Legacy – Has hints of Marty’s  classic Halo theme. This is kind of like a transition to Halo 4

2. Stark – An airy song. Reminds me of the recent Malukah Cortana Tribute

3. Who’s There? A mix of digital and drumbeats

4. Bridge Too Far – Starts out soft then brings us familiar sounds in the drumbeats finishing off with strings piano and the drumbeats getting heavier

5. Hunted – Definitely gives off the feeling of it’s namesake. Like the first Predator movie o that setting

6. Ready or Not – Starts off as an a cappella of tenor and soprano voices then with an intro of techno drumbeats

7. Wolverines Return – A heavy metal type of vibe, it works for it’s name sake.

8. Rising – Gentle strings and choir voices give way to horns in the distance. Then add piano. Much like the morning sun rising, hence it’s name. Halfway through it transitions to a heavy drumbeat as if awoken by an alarm. Violins come in to a somewhat hurried pace.

9. Survive – Right away this song makes you feel like there is danger. It is definitely aptly named. Strong horns and violin themes with a heavy drumbeat propel this song forward. About halfway through it makes a sudden transition to a techno sound with violins. The pace gets faster, then with about 30 seconds left, a piano comes in. It’s gentle even with the techno music being hurried.

10. Prelude – Piano and a lone female voice start this song out. Then more voices come in. It’s a very light song similar to #2’s ‘Stark’

Spartan Assault landscape poster

11. Breaking the Code – Heavy digital music and ‘beeps’ open this song, with violins in a serious tone. You get the feeling something important is taking place. Perfect for ‘Breaking the Code’

12. The Big Guns – A rhythmic heavy drumbeat is then accompanied by gentle sounds of a choir and piano. All blending quite well together. Then guitars are added in for an even heavier feeling

13. Quiet Giant – Voices and the occasional piano note with a soft far off rare drum beat open this song. The drums start to take more prominence then with a guitar chiming in. Those soften to allow the piano and voices to come back. This is the second longest of the 27 tracks in the album.

14. Guns in the Dark – A heavy drumbeat but somewhat slower than previous songs. There is a recurring theme of specific notes in this one to start. Quickly this gives way to a more complex series of drum beats that then quickly end.

15. Epic Evolution – Another of the airy choice tunes, the addition of a piano then guitar add a gentle touch. A violin is added for even more harmony. Then song start to then transition from airy to drums. With about 20 seconds left the drums stop. Evolution indeed.

16. Eliminate the Resistance – Synth and voices start this song off. Then an annoying singular voice cries out briefly. Midway through the music becomes more militaristic then ending with a calm sound.

17. Night Dreams – The echoing choir and alternating digital piano open this song. Strings come in with a rhythmic guitar double note. A feeling of dreaming while sleeping. The choir then becomes more prominent with drumbeats added in. This adds a subtle complexity to the song.

18. Wolverines Reborn – Very similar in sound to it’s counterpart #7’s Wolverines Return. A guitar screams out with very heavy drumbeats.

19. Regret – The choir once again opens a song. A beautiful blend of male and female voices in varying tones.  It’s the shortest of the 27 tracks.

20. Castle Defense – Guitar and choir mesh together with crashing cymbals. This quickly moves to strings crescendoing. Bringing back in the choir. There is a somewhat hurried pace to the music, while the choir itself is not hurried.

21. Simple Mystery – This has an eerie feeling to start. It’s ‘mysterious’. Heavy drumbeats add in then guitar comes in with strong chords.

22. Intimate – Soft piano keys strike, then a synthetic sound emanates from within.

23. Onslaught – This has a ‘jungle-like’ feeling. That’s the best way I can describe this with the very specific drum beats. Female voices add in an airy feeling. Synth chimes in. Different in tone to #5’s Hunted, it feels like it’s from the same area.

24. Elevated – Male voices open this song. Then the rest of the choir comes in. This is NOT the monk chant we are used to from classic Halo, but rather a light blend of male and female voices. Nearly all a capella

25. Knock Knock – This song opens with a foreboding sound as if something is about to break in.

26. Night Guards – A very hurried pace opens this song. This is another of the songs that mixes in strings of paces with the main sound. This adds to the richness of the song which ends all too soon.

27. Finishing the Fight – Lastly, drums and guitar usher in subtle voices and piano. You get the sense this is the end of something. After a minute clear drums and synth add a rolling distinct sound. Choir and violins add in. With one minute left this all gives way to a dramatic drumbeat. Then with 30 seconds left the airy choir and violins come back. Finally ending with a quick snap of a drum beat.

Spartan Assault lead-in graphic

Throughout the whole album there is continuity of drum beats as well as specific notes by the choir. I find that I can’t single out any one particular song, rather enjoying the whole album. Each song is rather short with the range of times from 42 seconds as the shortest to 3:16 as the longest. As such, I feel the album should be taken in as a whole rather than it’s component parts.

So the question is, should YOU get this album if you don’t already have it? That depends. If you’re looking for a break out hit from it, probably not, even though Wolverines Return is the highest rated among the tracks. Taken in as a whole though the complete album is chock full of militaristic tones, airy vibes, strong strings and heavy drumbeats. As a Halo fan, I definitely recommend it. The only complaint I have is that each track is way to short to enjoy them on their own.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the review. If so please leave a reply below.

I’d like to thank my friend ‘PensHalo‘ for getting this album for me.

Okay folks, first to answer correctly gets a Halo Mega Bloks Convention Covert Ops Spartan Mk VI w/green visor (as seen here), as well as either another Halo Mega Bloks figure OR a McFarlane Avatar minifigure.

[UPDATE] The question has been correctly answered: Crimson, Majestic, Castle. Check back again tomorrow for the next question and articles on the Spartan Assault Soundtrack,  the Halo 4 Essential Visual Guide, and another Halo Mega Bloks Toy Review! (and possibly more than that…)

Halo Initiation #2 comic book: Review SPOILERS!!!

Halo Initiation 2

With this series only lasting 3 books, issue 2 moves at a frenetic pace.

Issue 1 ended with Jun asking Palmer if she wanted to be a Spartan.
Issue 2 picks up with Insurrectionists planning to steal the UNSC Infinity. The next couple of pages show Palmer’s transformation from normal human to super soldier. What’s great about these pages is that they tell some of the story of what those changes actually are. VERY cool!

Palmer and 4 other spartan recruits go through an exercise against marines where 4 of them are taken down. Palmer is the lone survivor, but at a cost. Yes, she completes the mission, but learns a lesson in team support. Thankfully this is just an exercise and all of the spartans are alive and well.

Next we see the newly minted spartans aboard the Infinity. There is a two-page spread showing the Infinity in all it’s glory and it looks outstanding!

The Innies pose as a construction crew and board the ship shortly thereafter kidnapping Captain Del Rio.  He’s such a putz… Alarms sound, we get to see the Infinity’s AI, which at this point is NOT Roland, but one who takes a female form. The Innies take control of the ship. Palmer moves to action selected the now known Scout armor she is seen wearing in Halo 4’s Campaign and Spartan Ops. The last page shows her being harnessed up in the suit.

Okay, so the story is good, but man, there are SO many questions I’d like to ask. One thing mentioned in this issue is that Spartans do not have rank. ‘Spartan’ IS their rank. Um SORRY…No that is WRONG! Master Chief is a RANK, not his name. All of Noble team had ranks. Palmer herself is a Lieutenant in the campaign, then goes on to be a Commander. So um, PLEASE do NOT screw with continuity here! GRR, I really hate when this kind of stuff happens.

The art itself is good. I think better in this issue than in the first.  Though I’m not found of the cover of this one as Palmer looks to “girlie.”

All this said, if you’re into the fiction as I am, this is a MUST buy!

On sale now at a Comic Book store near you! (And I HIGHLY recommend buying from those local shops as they need your support, rather than an online retailer.)

And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER) (Video Review at end of article)

MB ODST Battle Unit FRONTFantastic display of figures in the package. No mistaking what’s in there.

MB ODST Battle Unit BACKMB ODST Battle Unit Contents
Here  is what you get in the package. Note the Hunter’s spikes are in a small plastic bag hidden in the package. So dont’ mis that if you open your set. I wish the Spartan Laser has some extra paint detail, but that’s a minor thing. Same with the needler. Again oh so minor.

MB ODST Battle Unit GRUNTThe grunt has a nice mustard gold color to his armor. I do wish MEGA would make the skin color the lighter more game accurate color, but as I’m a Pittsburgh Sports fan, this is a Black and Gold grunt, which is A-OKAY with me!!!

MB ODST Battle Unit ODSTThe painted ODST in this set is AWESOME! You could say this is either the Rookie or Sgt. Buck from Halo 3 ODST (the game).

MB ODST Battle Unit Active Camo ODSTAH YEAH! Translucent figures are ALWAYS a hit with me!

MB ODST Battle Unit GOLD HunterThough not game accurate in color, this is sure to be a prized possession by kids and some collectors alike. Hunters are already in short supply in the Halo Mega Bloks line, so it’s great that they made another one. I consider all gold variants the leaders of their respective races. So this is my Hunter Leader.

MB ODST Battle Unit setThe gang all say HI!

Summary: No real build to this other than the stand if you choose to do that. This set is ready to play with, out of the package. This is great for those among you who are army builders. More ODSTs are always welcome in my book, especially the painted one in this set. Grunts are fun to have in an army too!.

Overall Rating: I give this set 9.5 out for 10 medals. If the set had an active camo back pack and the grunt/hunter were game accurate colors, this would have been a 10 out of 10.

[UPDATE] The questions has been correctly answred. Jorge is S-052. I accepted 052 and would have also accepted Jorge 052 or Jorge-052.

Toy Review: Mega Bloks Brute Battle Unit. Now with Video!

MB grey logo
Mega Bloks Brute Battle Unit: Set #97085

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 1 minutes
Set Piece Count: 37
Minifigs: Green Security Spartan, Marine Sergeant, Dark Grey Brute Chieftan, Active Camo Brute Stalker
Weapons: Assault Rifle, Grenade Launcher, Gravity Hammer, Active Camo Brute Mauler
Accessories: N/A
Price: $12-15 (Price may vary by store)
Special Features: 4×4 Tile has Halo logo printed on it

And on with the pics! (Click pics to make BIGGER) (Video Review at end of article)

MB Brute Battle Unit FRONT
As always the packaging is great. MEGA did a nice job of showing the Active Camo Brute against a black background within the package.

MB Brute Battle Unit BACK

MB Brute Battle Unit SORTEDAll the pieces sorted. I never use these bloks and plates as figure stands. Instead I use them for dioramas.

MB Brute Battle Unit Marine SGTYes, more Marine Sergeants! Hopefully this will come as an African American version as well so we can finally get Sgt. Johnson from the games.

MB Brute Battle Unit Spartan SecurityThough I’m not particularly a fan of the Security armor, I know many fans are. The toy figure looks great, so no knocks there.

MB Brute Battle Unit Brute ChieftanThis is only the second time we’ve seen this come out in an official set. The other being the Brute Chopper. This version is all dark grey. I’d have liked a little more paint detail here. Still, it’s a great figure. The headdress is semi-flexible so it won’t be easy to break.

MB Brute Battle Unit Brute StalkerWoot, woot! An active camo figure! You all know I just LOVE translucent toys. This is the Brute Stalker. The detail in this sculpt is exceptional! Hard to tell from the pics as this is active camo. Just trust me, it’s awesome!.

Summary: No real build to this other than the stand if you choose to do that. This set is ready to play with, out of the package. This has a nice selection of UNSC and Brute forces.

Overall Rating: I give this set 9 out for 10 medals. I’m not a fan of the Security Spartan. Not the sculpt mind you, just the armor in the game in general. As well, maybe a little more paint on the Brute Chieftan and this would have at least a 9.5. Still a great set and I recommend getting it.
