Toy Review: Mega Bloks UNSC Hangar Deck

Mega Bloks UNSC Hangar Deck: Set #97133

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 3 minutes
Set Piece Count: 53
Minifig: Metallic Teal EVA Spartan
Weapons: All three are “smoky” translucent: Magnum, SMG, Shotgun
Accessories: N/A
Price: $10

And on with the pics!
MB UNSC Hangar Deck Box
As I’ve commented on, I love the new white packaging design as it makes it stand out more from other dark toy packaging.
MB UNSC Hangar Deck contents
Here are the contents. As you can see, the directions (second from left) are used for part of the graphics for the box. The white “tray” holds it in place. The actual piece bag is small and only takes up roughly 25% of the inside of the box. So why is the box so tall then? Simple enough to answer.
In order to not only show the second set of three, the box had to be taller to show off the combination set of all three into the Booster Frame set.
MB UNSC Hangar Deck sorted
The pieces are sorted out. It’s important to note the not including the minifig, there are actually 47 pieces. This confirms from the C&C console review that MEGA does indeed count the minifig as 6 pieces. I’d have to break those down into: Head, Left Arm, Right Arm, Left Leg, Right Leg, Body.
MB UNSC Hangar Deck finished
The set completed. This one reminds me more of a mini Factory, with it’s silos included. It isn’t really anything game related. Stlll, it’s a neat little set.
MB UNSC Hangar Deck weapons
Here are the weapons included. As with the C&C console set. I’m still a little perplexed towards the decision to make the weapons translucent. Again though, it’s not really an issue with me.
MB UNSC Hangar Deck minifig
Also, as with the C&C set, the Hangar set’s gem is it’s minifigure. The Teal metallic deco of the spartan literally makes it shine. We’ve rarely seen teal as a color of choice and it looks great here.
MB UNSC Hangar Deck alt build
You who may not want to display this on the base provided. So, I’m showing you an alternate build. You can see by the graphic above how I attached each of the split off pieces. This still retains the look of the set as if it were on a base for the most part. Yet now you can place it anywhere without the need for the base. I’m saving up these base pieces to make a large battle diorama. That is in large part my motivation for doing the alternate builds.

Summary: This is the second of the three Booster Frame sets. It’s a neat little set on it’s own, though doesn’t really resemble anything in the game. The minifig’s metallic deco really helps to make this a good set!

Overall Rating: I give this set 8 out for 10 medals. Of the three individual Booster Frame sets, this is my least favorite. Mostly because the mini-set doesn’t resemble anything from the game and on it’s on looks out of place. However, the saving grace is that minifig!

That said, if you intend on building the Booster Frame, you’re going to need this set. Since it’s affordable at $10, I definitely recommend getting it.

I need to once again thank my wife for getting me this. Another early Birthday present. As I’ve been saying, she’s the best!

Toy Review: Mega Bloks C&C console

Mega Bloks C&C console: Set #97131

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 3 minutes
Set Piece Count: 60
Minifig: Marine Medic
Weapons: All three are “smoky” translucent: Assault Rifle, DMR, Railgun
Accessories: N/A
Price: $10

And on with the pics!
MB UNSC CnC console box
As I’ve commented on, I love the new white packaging design as it makes it stand out more from other dark toy packaging.
MB UNSC CnC console contents
Here are the contents. As you can see, the directions (second from left) are used for part of the graphics for the box. The white “tray” holds it in place. The actual piece bag is small and only takes up roughly 25% of the inside of the box. So why is the box so tall then? Simple enough to answer.
In order to not only show the one set of three, the box had to be taller to show off the combination set of all three into the Booster Frame set. You’ll see all three sets together in another review along with the packaging side by side which will make more sense then.
MB UNSC CnC console sorted
The pieces are sorted out. It’s important to note the not including the minifig, there are actually 54 pieces. So I guess MEGA is counting the figure as six pieces? Though truthfully it’s made up of several more component parts. I count 14.
MB UNSC CnC console finished views
This is an easy build. Here’s the set completed. It actually reminds me more of a “mixing” table, as in DJ table, than a command console. On it’s own, it’s a nifty little set piece.
MB UNSC CnC console weapons
Here are the weapons included. Here’s the only part that I’m a little perplexed. Mind you I LOVE translucent toys. However, in this instance, it just doesn’t fit. Why give a solid painted figure translucent weapons? What’s funny is that the railgun on the packaging is shown in solid black. This is minor to me, though I’ve read posts on collecting forums of people bashing MEGA for this choice. Really folks, if you want a solid weapon, either spray paint these or just get some weapons packs for those extra weapons. This is a non-issue with me, just a strange decision by MEGA, IMO.
MB UNSC CnC console minifig
Now THIS is the GEM of the set, IMO. The minifig is AWESOME!. Paint detail is fantastic. This is the Medic version of the Marine. As I was a Hospital Corpsman in the US Navy, this figure holds a special little place in my heart. What’s better is that it’s an “Easter Egg” figure of a sense. Conan O’Brien and his sidekick Andy Ricter did some funny voice over work for Halo 4. Their characters were these very same Medics. So….I’m going to have to get TWO of this set at least! Gotta have my CoCo and Andy! LOL.
MB UNSC CnC console off-base
Finally, for those of you who may not want to display this on the base provided, I’m showing you a slightly alternate build. Here I show some of the pieces on the sides of the console that are then combined and attached unobtrusively to the back of the console. This way you can display flat without the base. As well all of your pieces are accounted for and in one place.

Summary: This is the first of the three Booster Frame sets. It’s a neat little set on it’s own, though doesn’t really resemble anything in the game. With a quick build, good weapons include (if odd choice for being translucent), and a knock-out minifig, this is a great set!

Overall Rating: I give this set 9 out for 10 medals. Again, the weapon color is minor to me, but I’ve read enough complaints by others to know it is a big deal in the collecting community. So that is the only reason this didn’t get the perfect 10 from me.

I need to once again thank my wife for getting me this. Another early Birthday present. As I’ve been saying, she’s the best!

Toy Review: Mega Bloks Last Man Standing Zombie Pack

Mega Bloks Last Man Standing Zombie Pack: Set #97199

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: NA
Set Piece Count: 40
Minifigs: Blue Security Spartan, Glow in the Dark: CQB, EOD, Recon, EVA
Weapons: Shotgun, 4 “Glow in the Dark” green translucent energy swords
Accessories: N/A
Price: $15

And on with the pics!

MB Last Man Standing Zombie Pack packageThe dark inner graphic of the cardback helps to highlight the GITD figures. The only thing hidden from view are the figure stands.

MB Last Man Standing Zombie Pack figures
In light on top and after exposed to light for 15 minutes below. The GITD feature isn’t very prominent, but it still works.

Summary: A good figure pack for the price. I’m a fan of GITD toys, so this was a must buy for me. It is an exclusive to Target. Depending on your desires, you might want to wait on this for a sale. Target is usually good for that. But I wouldn’t wait too long. I suspect this set will sell fairly well.

Overall Rating: I give this set 8.5 out for 10 medals. If the GITD feature was “brighter” it would have scored higher. Also, while I respect the idea of the green swords to coincide with the color of the Zombie Spartans, I’d rather have had game accurate blue ones. That’s not a complaint, just a preference.

I need to once again thank my wife for getting me this. Another early Birthday present. As I’ve been saying, she’s the best!

Toy Review: Mega Bloks UNSC Attack Cyclops

Mega Bloks UNSC Attack Cyclops: Set #97108

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 2 minutes
Set Piece Count: 54
Minifig: Covert Ops Marine (“Shark Grey” color)
Weapons: Sniper Rifle
Accessories: N/A
Price: $15-17 depending on where you buy it from.

And on with the pics!

MB UNSC Attack Cyclops 97108 packageI really REALLY like the graphics for the packaging. It showcases the contents very well, explains the cyclops on the back, and the inside graphic once you’ve cut away the plastic bubble is great!
MB UNSC Attack Cyclops 97108 sorted
As always the contents sorted out.
MB UNSC Attack Cyclops 97108 articulation
I don’t recall doing this for the previous 3 iterations of the cyclops, so here is a front and back shot of it showing it’s articulation.
MB UNSC Attack Cyclops 97108 weapon
This is how the shoulder mounted gun is assembled.
MB UNSC Attack Cyclops 97108 finished
The finished set with the Marine standing in the cockpit. He’s holding the sniper rifle. With the other three Cyclops, I was able to put both the backpack and the respective weapons in the cockpit with the marine and close it. The sniper rifle is a bit too long for that, so…
MB UNSC Attack Cyclops 97108 finished side snipe
…I put it on one of the forearms, using the side peg on the weapon to attach it.

Summary: This now is my favorite of the 4 versions of the cyclops. For one, I really love this color. As well, the shoulder mounted guns are much more impressive that the other three cyclops weapons. The sniper rifle is well detailed with paint.

Overall Rating: I give this set 10 out for 10 medals. Given that I got this at Target for $2 cheaper than Toys R Us, I felt better about the price. I still wish these cyclops sets would have included a UNSC technician figure though.

I need to once again thank my wife for getting me this. Another early Birthday present. As I’ve been saying, she’s the best!

The reviews are:
• Zombie infection set
• Heavy Assault Cyclops
• All three of the Booster Frame sets

The names above are not the official names, I’ll have those for the reviews.

The Halo Bulletin 8.7.13

halobulletinheader_8-7-13

This week’s bulletin starts off with talk of the Champions Bundle pack. Specifically five of the medals you can earn by playing Ricochet.

goal-defense2 Goal Defense: Kill an enemy ball carrier within 25m of your goal without them scoring.

ball-clear2 Ball Clear: Throw a ball 40m away from your own goal.

rejection2 Rejection: Intercept a throw within 25m of your goal.

fast-break2 Fast Break: Scoring a goal within 15 seconds of a ball set without a turnover.

HFFL: I have to say, I can’t wait for this gametype. I’m so excited for it, that I’m thinking about starting up a Ricochet League.

Next up the weekly news on the Halo 4 Global Championship.
Three of the four finalists from week one have been confirmed. These are:
garigraiko39
T15 Carnopy
xStr8 Sick

There has been some delay in confirming weeks 2 and 3 as 343 continues their investigation into network manipulation and boosting. I’m VERY glad to hear this!

Here are week 4’s current top 4 as of 8.7.13 at 4:20pm:
wk 4 top 4

No surprise at the top spot there. Naded is a pro-player. I can’t see him being taken out of the running this week. It’s his spot to lose at this point.

We next move on to the Matchmaking Playlist Update. The bulletin goes on to list the settings for the final online weekly competition for the Halo 4 GC. Listings show Legendary Rumble and Legendary Rumble BR.

Spartan Ops Matchmaking missions are as follows:
Mission 4, Episode 1: Hairy Call
Mission 4, Episode 3: Random Transport
Mission 5, Episode 3: Everything Has Gone Wrong
Mission 5, Episode 4: The Cauldron Base
Mission 5, Episode 5: Spartan Thorne

Lastly, 343 will be removing “Sarge’s Lab” from the Girfball map rotation as the map undergoes some lighting optimization. A refreshed version (and more) will be included the next time we update the playlist.

In further Halo 4 GC news, we have the gamescom qualifier.

Text taken directly from HaloWaypoint:
Gamescom, the world’s largest trade fair and event for interactive games in Cologne, Germany will be the last chance to qualify for a spot in the Halo 4 Global Championship finals. We can’t wait to check out the competition in Germany and are now able to share some details with you.

The Gamescom Halo 4 Global Championship Qualifier will be taking place from August 22nd – August 24th (Thursday – Saturday) and each day will be an individual tournament, meaning that competitors need not make a weekend-long commitment in order to participate. Due to the size and format of Gamescom, the tournament will be walk-up only. Arrive early each day if you’d like to get a spot in the competition, as we cannot guarantee anyone a spot. For the same reasons, we cannot guarantee that all attendees will be able to compete (that would be awesome but may also take several months) and estimate that we will be able to accommodate at least 1,500 competitors over the course of the weekend.

The game types that will be featured at Gamescom are identical to the ones used at RTX, and the map rotation will be Haven, Skyline and Onyx. We’ll have additional details regarding the format of the show in the near future. If you’re looking to compete, head to the Xbox booth on Thursday morning to get in line. If you’ll be at the show, we’ll see you there and are looking forward to see who of Europe’s finest will earn a trip to the finals in Seattle the following weekend!

Finally, the Screenshot Spotlight this week. It’s all about the Monitor.

HFFL’s first ever LAN EVENT – updated details!!! Special Guests and more!

Since I’m getting a good response so far from this, I’m changing the name from LAN Party to LAN Event.

Before I get too far into the updates, here again are the specifics again for the event:

DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 14. It will be a 3 hour event, from 5-8pm.
COST: The cost is $15 per person. This will include pizza and a drink as well as use of the gaming equipment. I will also be holding a FFA tournament within this LAN for prizes. Prizes TBD. (More on that soon.)
LOCATION: Game On Party Planners LLC
1105 Rochester Road
Pittsburgh, PA  15237
(Across from Sir Pizza, behind Fischer)

The event will be streamed on Twitch.. Live video/commentating as well. Oh yeah, I guess I should mention this….

podtacular-logo
I am happy to report that the HFFL LAN Event will have at least two special guests. DustinDust StormPettigrew, host of the longest and most popular Halo podcast on the net Podtacular.com, will be in attendance. It’s his Twitch channel we’ll be streaming the event through.

GH057ayameAlso, EricGH057ayameHewitt, former National Halo Champion and current Halo commentator, will be there. Not sure if I can get him to commentate the FFA mini-tourney here, but we’ll see…

So here’s a chance to meet two important Halo community members in both Dustin and Eric.

If you plan on attending, I will need a few things:

• E-mail me at sal@halofanforlife.com with your intention to come to the event.
• You must be 18 years of age or older. ID will be checked. If you don’t have ID you will not be allowed in. [UPDATE] I’ve had a few requests from those 18-20 to attend the event. I am now opening this up to those ages as well. However you MUST sign a waiver, stating you will NOT drink alcoholic beverages at the event.
• Payment must be in cash at the event location.

Since this is an adult event, you are permitted to bring alcohol, however you MUST sign a waiver absolving both the gaming center and myself from any alcohol related actions. This is mandatory. If you don’t/won’t sign it, then please do not attend. Neither the business nor myself can afford a lawsuit, which I hope you all understand. Again, under 21 will NOT be permitted to drink alcohol, nor will you be admitted if it’s suspected you were drinking alcohol before the event.

[UPDATE 2] I have decided to bring some rare collectibles for viewing. Beyond the already discussed Mega Bloks Forward Unto Dawn set and custom Covenant Cruisers I’ve built, I will also have on display:
3 foot tall Halo 2 Master Chief
• McFarlane’s Master Chief Vs. Hunter statue from the “Forward Unto Dawn” series. This is one of only 500 produced and you’ll have a chance to see it in person.

[UPDATE 3] There will be some time set aside during the event to showcase Halo collectibles. So if YOU have something unique/rare/or just something directly Halo related you’d like to show-off, PLEASE bring it! Also, if you have some kind of Halo attire, be that shirts, hats, pins, please wear them to the event. Represent HALO!
This isn’t mandatory of course, just something neat for a Halo related event to show on the stream as well as have in pictures.

I do want to mention that by coming to the event, you agree to have your picture taken. This may or may not be posted on the blog/twitter/facebook. No reimbursement either. This is just a fun event folks.

As I get news on prizes or anything else new for the event, I’ll continue to post updates for the LAN.

Hope to see you there!!!

The Arbiter in the next Halo game?

Thel_'VadamThe Arbiter in the next Halo game?

This has been a question I’ve been mulling over and have discussed with friends and other gamers.

When last we left the Arbiter in a Halo game, he was at the memorial for fallen soldiers on Earth. In the novels however, he’s been written into the current Kilo-5 trilogy of books. With the last one still to come out, it seems apparent he will once again have a role in the trilogy.

The questions becomes, is Thel Vadam (the current Arbiter’s real name) killed in this lastest book? If so, then this event sets it up nicely for Jul M’dama to take over as the new Covenant leader.

If however, he is not killed in the next book, then does he have a place or reason to be in the next Halo game? Beyond long time fans have a bit of nostalgia for the character, is he necessary to the story? Before answering that, we need to look at what 343 has done with the story of Halo since they took over for Bungie.

Before Halo 4 came out, it was becoming increasingly clear that 343 decision makers wanted their own take on the Haloverse. They made some significant changes in the direction of the story as well as the look of certain elements, the Forward Unto Dawn for example. Not to mention the curiously absent Brutes. Yes, I know, there was the Great Schism in the Covenant after the end of the human/covenant war. Still there could have been a place for Brutes. That’s not the crux of this article, but it is worth mentioning.

Thel_`Vadam_TranparentSee, 343 wants to not only make their mark in Halo, looking from the outside in, it seems they wanted Elites to take the forefront again as enemies in Halo. This leaves no room for the Arbiter to appear in the next game. Why? Well simply put, if he’s aligned with the UNSC then where would he be inserted into the game? A cut scene maybe, but that certainly would not quell long-time fans thirst to PLAY as him in the games again.

Also, let’s take into account that the Storm faction of the Covenant, of which Jul M’dama leads, was not the main enemy in Halo 4. Rather that was the Didact and his army of Prometheans. While Jul did take center stage during the events of Spartan Ops, with Spartan Ops all-to-early demise, the likelihood of Elites becoming the main enemy again is decreased. This doesn’t mean it won’t happen, just that if the story is taken along an expected route, they won’t be as big of a factor in the next game. This further demonstrates why the Arbiter won’t be in the next game.

Personally, do I want to have “Arby” back in a Halo game? An emphatic YES! However, giving this some real thought, seeing the direction of the story in Halo 4, reading the events of the Kilo-5 trilogy and now better understanding 343’s plans for the franchise, as much as I don’t want to say it, I do not expect the Arbiter to be in the next game. Certainly not as a playable character.

At this point, any argument I could give for the Arbiter to be in the next game would be skewed by nostalgia, rather than a real need to have him in the game. That is unless Jul M’dama becomes the NEW Arbiter…hmmm….

What are you’re thoughts on this? Would you like to see the Arbiter back in the next game? If so, give me your reason(s) why he should be in. Hit that “REPLY”. If you’re not yet signed up for the blog, then please register so you can reply. All you need to do is send me an e-mail at sal@halofanforlife.com with your desired screen name AND a password you want to use for the site. I’ll get you registered pronto and you can start replying.

Halo 4 Global Championship….VERY skewed…

First, let me say that I love 343 for continuing on the Halo franchise. However, that doesn’t mean I need to agree with everything they do. So with that said, I’ve got some real issues with the Halo 4 Global Championship going on right now.

I know 343/Virgin gaming had good intentions for this and by all accounts the tournament is being played a lot. That however doesn’t mean it’s been set up right.

Now, I’m not going to say I know everything there is to know about a tournament. NOONE does. However, I’ve noticed and have had friend tell me about things that are just plain WRONG with how the tournament is being run.

My own argument aside for why I feel pro players shouldn’t be in this (long story and I won’t go into it), why wasn’t there a cut off date to register BEFORE the competition? I’ve had MANY a friend tell me they are playing against gamers with VERY low CSRs yet HIGH K/Ds. Folks, that’s playing on an alternate account. It’s NOT in the name of sportmanship. I even asked HaloWaypoint about this. Here’s their canned response (I’ve seen the same answer to this from another tweet):

Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 9.39.28 PM

I’m sorry, but no matter how this wants to be spinned that is down right DIRTY play. MS makes the money on those multiple accounts, so they can turn a blind eye. But really, 343/Virgin Gaming, if you want a tournament to be respectable, you’ve GOT to eliminate this from the competition. Personally, I’d have had some STRICT rules for this, especially given that there is $200K on the line for first place!

Here is just some of what I’ve had done with this:
• You must have been a GOLD member for at least 3 months prior to the event start
• Registration ENDS the day BEFORE the competition begins. NOT each week.
• Blatant alternate accounts will be banned and may suffer a permanent XBOX ban.

Beyond these rules, here are some other things I would have had in place: Players who qualified from events, RTX for example are NOT permitted to play in the online portion or later events. Why? Because for instance there is a certain competitor who qualified at RTX and who IS playing in the online competition. WHY? REALLY? SO you want to wreck people’s hopes BEFORE they even get to Seattle? Totally NOT fair gameplay at all.

Also, NO frackin’ way I’d invite people in to play that didn’t participate in the competition. If you’re going to invite pro-players (which already scants the competition to a pro winning it all), AND inviting 4v4 teams instead of straight up FFA (some where some were not), then where do you stop inviting people? Community leaders may say they would like a shot too. Do you allow them in? What about those smaller groups/sites/etc (like me for instance) that while not as well known, put their life into Halo? See where I’m going with this? Regardless that those pros being invited have to pay to get Seattle, the point is they did NOT work for it in the ACTUAL competition. Or even if they had and not qualified, then maybe they should be going…just sayin’.

Look, I know this is about finding the BEST or the BEST in Halo 4. I also know I’m no where near that. But I DO have friends that are pretty damn good at the game. They won’t have a chance at this, especially with all the opportunities given to pros and alternate accounts.

Here is how I see this. You can’t clone yourself in sports. Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey…No clones there. So why is a tournament that has so much money on the line allowing people to make these multiple accounts and let them use it?

I was excited to just play in this tournament. But after the first DAY seeing that someone had racked up 60+ 1st place finishes, no losses, I figured, why even bother. Now to have these invited people? AND allow alt accounts? Sorry, but no way I’m playing this. Unfortunately, this has also caused a large number of my friends (again some who are VERY good) to not even play in it. Others were discouraged after the first week, and still others after the announcement of the invites for pro-players.

I think another thing to possibly have instituted was a set number of players. Yes, that could number in the thousands. However, add to that a MAX of two players from the same console. This would also help to eliminate alt accounts. There can’t be THAT many possibilities out there where more than two DIFFERENT people on the same XBOX will play in the competition AND have an actual chance of getting in the finals. So it really would be a moot point for those relative few. In turn though, it would promote FAR more fair play for the vast majority of the rest of the competitors.

Here is another rule I’d like to see but I know would be WAY to extreme for some, especially pro players:

Since this competition in in Halo 4, a requirement would be to have at least 500 gamerscore in the game from the original achievements in the game. This would FORCE all players to play more than just Multiplayer. In fact of the 1000GS available from the original achievements in Halo 4, only about 170-180 of them can be had through multiplayer.

So yes, this would mean those of you who just play Halo for multiplayer would have to get your hands dirty in the campaign, and in the case of Halo 4, Spartan Ops as well. Who knows, you might even find you like the story too….The fact is, MANY of these achievements are EASY to get. SO getting a 500GS in Halo 4 is NOT hard at all. In fact you can achieve this in ONE DAY if you just play it. So there is NO excuse here.

As a person with more than 15 years in marketing and advertising, and seeing the abysmal dropoff numbers for people playing Spartan Ops (and it’s cancellation after just one season when many of us though this would continue well on past that), at the least making achievement score tied in with a pre-qualifier would get people to play those other portions of the game. Again, it might just get people to like them too… 343 has said they wanted to be more story centric. So this is one way to get players to buy into that. Would having such a restriction piss some people off? Sure. But how about the blatant “cheating” going on right now with alt accounts? You don’t think that pisses off other fans as well? I’d have loved to see this competition be more for the Halo fans than just multiplayer fans. I’m not saying multiplayer only gamers aren’t fans, but they certainly are not as deep into the lore, story, etc. as those who play campaign and Spartan Ops.

Whew, okay, I better just stop here. This whole thing just has me upset that the everyday fan really had NO shot from the beginning of this AND that pro-players were given more than enough opportunity to get into the finals. Again, I knew that I wouldn’t make it into this. That would have been a pipe dream. But the rules I’ve suggested would have made it at least more fair. And the rule at the end would have brought in HALO players, not just matchmaking players.

We now return to your normal HFFL blog…
