Toy Review: Jada Toys Mongoose

jada_toys-logo
For Easter, my wife got me nearly the whole line of Jada Toys Halo line. Only one I didn’t get was the Hornet (and it’s variant).

Here are the four sets she got for me:
Jada 4 setsFirst, let me state that I hadn’t intended to buy this line. I didn’t want to start collecting yet another line. However having finally seen these in person, I was excited to open these up and see what the sets had to offer.

Below is my review of the Mongoose set.

This set comes on a small card and costs $8 (price may vary depending on store).
Jada Mongoose front
Jada Mongoose backThere is also a variant of this set that has Blue Spartans instead of Red. Also, of not, on Jada’s website, it say that the red set is a “gloss” finish, while the blue set is a “matte” finish.
Once I removed the bubble from the cardback, I was greeted to this nice graphic:
Jada Mongoose Cardback bubble off
Now that I had the outer packaging removed, I found this:
Jada Mongoose stand assembled on cardTurns out the base is screwed in. In order to remove it from the cardboard, without destroying the cardboard you have to unscrew it.
Jada Mongoose stand disassembledOkay then… I did find this step unnecessary. I understand this was likely done to keep the toy in place in the packaging. A good thing for those who collect stuff and keep it mint in package, but I’m not one of those folks, normally.
After fumbling with the figures a bit to try and make them fit on the mongoose, I finally got this pose:
Jada Mongoose 3:4 front
Jada Mongoose 3:4 back
And here are the minifigs themselves:
Jada Mongoose minifigsNow, I want to make note of several things here that will resonate among my forthcoming other Jada Toys reviews. Do NOT buy these for the minifigures. While their sculpt is decent for their size, and even the articulation is ok. The joints used are either flimsy or too tight. Not uniform at all.
Be very careful when trying to articulate these minifigs. I had a heck of a time trying to get the hips to bend. In the case of the figs above, I didn’t get it to work and didn’t want to break them, so I stopped trying to force the issue. Hence why the driver is off the seat.
The rider couldn’t hold the crossbar and I had to kind of squeeze him into place.
The vehicle itself is nice, though the handlebars and rear view mirrors are a flimsy plastic.
That brings me to another point. When a toy is touted as die cast metal, I kind of expect the whole thing to be so, or the overwhelming majority of it. That wasn’t the case here. I’d say it was about 50/50 metal/plastic.
I’m trying not to be overly critical here, so let me end this review on a positive note. The paint is good on the vehicle. The size makes it easy to display anywhere. Great for your desktops at work. For the price of about $8 I think it’s worth it. Though I’d have designed the figs a bit differently.

New Halo Play Arts Kai figures!

I showed you both the Spartan Soldier and Commander Sarah Palmer at New York Comicon. They were unpainted at that time…

Now though…BAM! Wow, these look amazing. I think I’m going to have to get the Palmer figure.

Yeah, these figures are a bit expensive. It’s the main reason why I don’t collect them. But I’ll make an exception in Palmer’s case.

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 3: The Thursday War.

Comicon, finally!

At this point it was about 10am. Not many people there yet and the con doesn’t officially start until 3pm. So I sat here in the lobby for 5 more hours…

I did have one 343 sighting. I ran into Sotaro Tojima (Sound Editor Extraodinaire!). I introduce myself and thank him graciously for his work on Halo 4 and can’t wait to talk with him again at the after party.

I run into “Mister Chief.”

I’m lucky enough to get into the right line that I’m in the Halo booth immediately after the con opens!

They were giving away this awesome shirt to the first 100 players:

Hmm, I may or may not have an extra one of these…if so, you may want to stay tuned for a contest that could possibly happen to win this, possibly…

Oh, I should make note that I got to play Slayer on Ragnarok. And hells yeah, I played with the Mantis! In it I destroyed another Mantis, a Banshee, 2 ghosts, and about 15 spartans. Yeah, it just KICKS THAT MUCH ASS! I never even noticed that the Scorpion was missing. Believe me, you won’t either. The Mantis moves fast. Much faster than the Scorpion. It’s dexterous. You can turn in it much easier than the tank. It won’t topple over when hit with heavy firepower. It won’t trip up if it goes over a cliff. It just falls straight down. Something to think about while using during gameplay. Does this vehicle get my approval? Um, Does a bear sh…er nevermind. HELL YEAH it does. I’m excited to play with this again!!!!!!

I’m a HUGE Iron Man fan, so when I saw this display I had to take a pic. (It’s actually two pics merged together as I didn’t have room to get it all in one shot.) The pathways were freakin’ narrow.

It’s only Thursday and I wanted to take it easy since I still had two more days of Convention to enjoy. So I hit the only other booth I really wanted to see that day. Mega Bloks! (Sorry for the fuzzy pics on some, sigh…)

Now here’s the thing…the Forward Unto Dawn set was supposed to have a blue Storm Elite now it has a Gold Elite General? I think that was a mistaken figure put up. But I’ll ask.

Interior work stations.

Cryo Tube bay

Fully stocked armory!

The cryo bay in the FuD set can also be purchased separately, though not with a light up Cortana.

Grr, my only shot of the Mega Bloks Mantis didn’t take well, but here it is anyway:

Believe me folks, that set is AWESOME! Some very cool unique parts. I got to “play” with it for a little bit.

I got to build something on the Mega Bloks build wall, so I chose my logo (albeit in the wrong colors and the colors I needed weren’t available):

I decided to hit one more booth. The Square Enix booth and found these:

These look great. Much better than the Reach figures. Chief (Halo 4 version) is available next year. I’m not collecting this line, but I WILL get Master Chief.

After this I meet up with a friend for a bit then head off to the hotel on Long Island that I’ll be staying at and so ends the first day of Comicon for me.

Globe Celebrates 10 Years of Halo with a Commemorative Cruiser Skateboard and Shoes

Reposted from HaloWaypoint.

Okay while the skateboard looks nice, I’m TOTALLY into those shoes. I want a pair of them. Porblem is I can’t find it anywhere on the Globe’s (the manufacturer) website. I’ve sent an e-mail looking into it. If any of you find a link, PLEASE forward it on to me.

UPDATE! Jen Taylor (Cortana herself) has helped me find a link to the shoes!

Halo shoes!!!

Sideshow Collectibles to produce a Master Chief Premium format figure!

Sideshow Collectibles is well known for producing high quality, if expensive, figures. They’ve finally had the opportunity to make something from Halo and their license starts with who else but the Master Chief himself in his Mark V armor.

Sideshow Collectibles Master Chief

This si likely going to be out of my price range, but it does look sweet. If any of you buy it, please take a lot of pics and forward them to me, so I can do a write on it. (You’ll get credit for the photos of course)

Halo 4 Swag.

Spartan Ops designer on Halo 4, David Ellis tweeted the following pic of some new Halo 4 swag:

It’s not yet known if these will be available on the official HaloWaypoint.com store, though it’s very likely.

I especially like the water bottle.
