Halo 3 LAN/Tournament after report

So I got the opportunity to not only be a reporter for a Halo 3 LAN/Tournament today, but also got to commentate.

The event was held at GameOn Party Planners. The same place I held my LAN on Sept 14.

This was my first ever gig as a commentator. From the commments afterwards, it seems like I did pretty well.

You can go to the following link to watch/hear me as well as watch the gameplay. I start in the stream at 20:54 of the clip, though the real action/FFA  Tourney doesn’t start until 47:37. At first it’s just a scrim going on, then we get into the real FFA action!

http://www.twitch.tv/gameonllc/b/467924270

The tournaments were ran by “EDamite_Warrior” while GameOn was the hosted site. MLG version 8 settings were used for all matches.

First came the FFA tourney. This was a one-game, winner take all match. The whole day I was commentating on Sargoth’s play. You may recall him if you read my articles about my LAN. He was the winner of that FFA tourney.

This time around he was in second place for nearly the whole match. It wasn’t until the last 10 seconds of the match while being 2 down that he pulled it out with a kill, followed up by a double kill for the win. It was an amazing finish.

Next up came the 2v2 tourney. There were three teams competing. So the tourney was run as a round-robin type of set-up with the top two teams advancing to the finals. Each round was best of three. Sargoth’s team won fairly handedly.

After this since only 2 teams were signed up for the 4v4 tournament, the cash prize tourney was replaced with a simple best of 7 scrim. Gametypes included during the scrim were CTF, Oddball, KOTH and Slayer.

Sargoth again ruled the day with his team winning 4-2 winning in 6 games.

The LAN lasted around 4 hours. Plans are for another tournament next month. The owner of GameOn also wants to get a Grifball Tourney going, while I expressed having a Ricochet Tournament some time in November, possibly online instead of as a LAN setting. I’ll keep you all posted as this develops.

I had a good time, though I do wish I had another caster with me to banter with. At times I felt I was repeating myself. Having another to interact with would have made things smoother. The owner invited me back to cast in the future, so this won’t be my only time. Hmm, who knows, maybe this will open a door for me???

I did have the pleasure of speaking with Ghostayame shortly before casting this, where he gave me some pointers.

If you watch the stream form the link above, let me know what you think of my first time casting.

Apologies, Halo Toy reviews delayed for a day. Technical Difficulties…

Had some issues with my phone camera today after updated a program. Took a bit of time to work through that with tech support. Finally did about an hour and a half ago.

I DID take all the pics needed for the McFarlane Halo figs as well as the Custom Halo Mega Bloks Covenant Corvette after this. However, that is more than 100 photos that I need to touch up and make ready for their respective reviews. That’s going to take awhile, so I’ll have the reviews up starting tomorrow.

Apologies to those that specifically were looking to see these today. It was my sincere intent to bring them to you. It irks me when tech stuff stops me from doing what I need/want to do.

I promise you, they will be worth the wait. (Especially the Didact figure! Wow is it amazing!!!)

Several things planned for tomorrow!

I’ve been a little quiet for me in the past few days. So tomorrow, I’ll be making that up a bit and bringing several things to the blog:

McFarlane Series 2 Halo 4 action figures reviewed. These to include:
• Storm Jackal
• Elite Ranger
• Purple CIO Spartan
• Orange Scout Spartan
• The DIDACT!!!

As well a custom Halo Mega Bloks ship.
• Custom Covenant Corvette (as seen in Reach)

There will also be a contest question for a weapon skin. This skin being the ‘Engage’ Skin for the Covenant Carbine that comes with Storm Jackal.

The Spirit of Fire Podcast for 9.29.13

Spirit of Fire Podcast LOGO_R-sm

This week, we welcome back Zach who wasn’t able to make it to last week’s podcast. He has a special segment in this week’s podcast where he discusses pro Halo players swithcing to Call of Duty for money. I’m splitting the podcast into two parts. There is a specific reason for this.

While the first part is our usual ‘Week in Halo’ portion and includes as well Zach’s topic of discussion being Halo pro players switching to Call of Duty for money, it’s the second part that is much more ‘controversial’.

In the second part of the podcast I go off on tangents regarding my displeasure with 343’s handling of the Halo franchise. It starts with me finding out theater HAS been encoded into Halo 4 all along and that 343 basically lied to us about it not being in the game (they just hid it from us). Thankfully a Halo 4 modder found this though. From there though, I go into detail about what I feel 343 did WRONG in Halo 4. Specifically things like unnecessary aesthetic/visual changes, audio changes, long established storylines, etc.

BE FOREWARNED, there is some ‘colorful’ language in the second portion. It’s one of the reasons I split the podcast into two sections. More importantly though, I wanted to give 343 the opportunity to listen to that portion I feel which expresses what MANY Halo fans, certainly those of us who had been with the franchise for a LONG time, feel about Halo 4 and how it’s deviated so far off course from what made Halo, HALO. BS ANgel tweeted that she wanted to know what we though 343 did right and wrong, so Jessica (BS Angel) here is my reply to that. (Next week, we’ll discuss what 343 did right.

I know that I’m likely not going to be on 343s ‘Christmas’ list per say after this recording, but that doesn’t concern me at all. If I wanted to be a yes man to 343, I could easily say all the ‘good’ things or the things they WANT to hear, versus what they NEED to hear. And yeah, I might have benefitted from that by being invited to events and such, but again, those of you who have followed me for some time know, I’m NOT that guy.

Like all of you am a consumer. We bought into this game thinking 343 understood what Halo was. What we got at launch proved very differently and it’s taken the full length of time since launch for 343 to catch up to where the game should have been on release date. In fact, I think they still have a way to go.

Okay, I could go on and on in written format. However, instead just repeating everything that was said in the podcast, I may as well just let you all listen in, right?

So here’s the first part. Again this is the tame news portion that has the week in Halo, and then the important pro player discussion of some of them switching to Call of Duty from Halo for money reasons.

Or right click the following to download. SoF 9-29-13 Week in Halo-Pro Players portion

The following is the second part. Again, I will warn you that it contains language I would not allow in replies on the site here. So if you’re under 18, PLEASE either do NOT listen to it or get permission first.

Click the arrow to play below:

      SoF 9-29-13 Cover Band portion

Or right click the following to download. SoF 9-29-13 Cover Band portion

And PLEASE, give me some feedback on this. Whether or not you agree with me on what I said, I want to hear what you all are thinking as well.

On the second part, I do want to add that I want 343 to understand what I meant by saying they are a cover band or stewards of Halo. We all know Bungie isn’t coming back to Halo. So it’s not like 343 is holding something in place until Bungie returns. However that also does not mean 343 should ‘change the kingdom’. Halo has long been established and many of the changes 343 made, especially those aesthetic ones were done to make Halo their one and to separate it from Bungie’s Halo. As you’ll hear in that portion of the podcast, I’m VERY much against that. I went through this sort of discontinuity with Star Wars, a franchise I supported for 35 years. I absolutely hated having to explain to other not-so-hard core fans about the issues with continuity. I do NOT want to go through that again and with Halo.

It most definitely should not be on the fans to get the Halo universe straight or explain away things that seem out of place. 343 you have a DUTY to ADHERE to what came before. While some SLIGHT visual changes can be made to what has been established to show better computer power or that you as well can design good aesthetics, to completely change aspects of the game that have been long established is a disservice to the community that you hope will remain with you as it had also supported Bungie for it’s 10 year run on Halo.

You had the perfect opportunity to steer the boat back into the right direction. However you chose to go FURTHER off course and took Halo in even different directions that take away from the core of what Halo is. If you need for me or others to spell that out in words specifically detailing what we mean, then that is a testament that shows we the community that you in fact do NOT understand what Halo is and what it means to we fans (and CONSUMERS).

You have had your one and only pass. Halo 5 (or whatever you decide the next Halo game will be call in the series) MUST be a success that far surpasses anything done previously.

To do this you MUST consider other successes. You MUST consider giving yourselves enough time to FULLY develop the game and NOT take shortcuts. We WILL wait. Providing the game we get at launch is something well worth waiting for. Just take a look at what RockStar did with GTA V as an example of it’s fans being patient and rewarding the developer. There is NO way you can compete with a Billion dollar selling game, even if on multi-platforms. SO please do not try to spin words to say otherwise.

Core gameplay MUST return. Social and Ranked playlist MUST return. Theater MUST return. Core playlists and game types MUST return, whether you or Bungie created them. By trying to cut out much of what Bungie established in Halo, you ARE shooting yourselves in the foot as well as SHI….ing on the Halo community. If you think we fans feel entitled, well YES WE DO. If it were NOT for we fans buying into this game for MANY games prior to what you inherited, Halo would not have continued to exist.

You MUST do better to do right by the Halo community. We by word of mouth, via the net, social media, face to face and otherwise will take care of the rest. Put out a HIGH quality game that adheres to established core mechanics, while providing new things (in separate playlists) will put you squarely in the right mindset of Halo fans. Refuse to acknowledge that for the next game and continue with your ignorance of such or your rock star attitudes and “we know better than you” thinking and you will kill this franchise.

Okay, I had to get some of that off my chest folks….

Populate HFFL 2nd anniversary

One person wasn’t accounted for that actually played. However since Waypoint does not show this, I will go by their stats as official. Yes, I had to paste the image above together to show all who played. Following the link above will show these same people.

The TOTAL kills for this one hour period were: 1,202.

While it wasn’t a huge number of gamers that played, that wasn’t the only goal. The main goal was to get this started. Then the hope is that other Halo communities will pick the banner and go for the record of most gamers in a one-hour custom game of Halo. (Come to think about it, most kills too!)

I did follow some specific rules, so if you want to try this out and want to use the same rules/settings I used for this, send me an e-mail at sal@halofanforlife.com. I HEARTEDLY invite any and all Halo communities to top this number and keeping trying to top each other. THis is meant to be a fun bragging rights kind of thing.

Hopefully this is just the START of something cool!

Populate HFFL time has changed!!!

I’m making a late change here from before being 7-8 pm NOW being 9-10 pm.

A few reasons for the change:
• Agents of Shield (new Marvel series on ABC) is on from 8-9pm my time and I do not want to miss a second of it)
• Some of my gaming group guys won’t be able to make it until later.
• Other friends/fnas have asked for a later time so they can make it too. This accounting for the time difference between east and west coast.

So join me at now 9pm EST until 10PM for the Populate HFFL event. For more info go here.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause anyone.

Populate HFFL! A Special Daily Challenge!!! REMINDER

hffl for sal On Sept 24, 2013, HFFL will turn 2 years old. To celebrate this, I invite you to a special daily challenge.

From 7-8pm Eastern time HFFL will be looking to start a new record. Most gamers to play in one specific Halo game in one hour. To do this gamers will only be allowed to game for a maximum of ONE MINUTE during the whole of the hour if the 16 person partyl is full. If not full, you may continue to play. Once the lobby is full, I will ask someone to leave to make room for an other gamer. No guests will be allowed as I can’t account for them being separate gamers by gamertag during this event.

Please do not come back into the game so we can allow for more gamers to participate. The potential for this is 960 gamers in the same one-hour game of Halo if each gamer plays only one minute’s worth of time.

Now given the dropping out of the game when we reach the 16 person limit and I ask someone to leave to make room for another, it’s likely we’re going to experience LAG. How that will affect the time played, I’m not sure. So the game will be ended at 9pm regardless of actual playing time. To do this, I will be handicapping the potential amount of gamers by being the ONLY one to stay in this game the whole time. This is to also facilitate booting people out of the game if they are staying longer than they should be…

So with all that said, PLEASE get the word out! Message your friends on XBOX, text, tweet, facebook, e-mail, call, skype and whatever other method reasonable you can to tell them about this event!

I’ll have the party open during this game, so you can join in freely.
Search for gamertag: HaloFanForLife1 at that time and put yourself into the queue to join.

Let’s see what kind of record we can set!

(I’ll be honest, it doesn’t matter to me how many show up, though the more the merrier of course. This is an event that hopefully will start a chain of repeated events of this that other Halo communties will attempt to top.)

HFFL’s 1st ever LAN Recap!

HFFL logo LANstravaganza

This weekend marked the first ever HFFL LAN. After what seemed like forever in planning (which was actually only about 6 weeks prior), the LAN event came and went TOO quickly.

It’s started this past Friday with the arrival of my good friend Zach, aka PGL Rick Grimes. He’s also one of my co-hosts on the Spirit of FIre podcast. He flew in early Friday. After we checked him into his hotel, we headed straight for Primanti’s. For those NOT local to Pittsburgh, Primanti’s is one of our most famous sandwich restaurants. They served sandwiches with an array of meats with cheese. But the thing that makes them unique is that they also slap on a good portion of fries and coleslaw on the sandwich, which is between two large cut slices of Italian bread. There’s a reason for this. Primanti’s sits in an area called the ‘Strip District’. No NOT strip clubs. Rather it’s a strip of land that house wholesale business. The story goes that truckers and train operators would stop into Primanti’s for a quick bite to eat. In order to help get those men back on the road/rails quicker, and help the guys get a full meal instead of only finishing part of it, Primanti’s put all of the food platter into the sandwich. This way if the guys didn’t have time to finish or could only buy the sandwich and run, they got a whole meal they could take with them. It’s since become a Pittsburgh favorite and a must stop for anyone visiting Pittsburgh for the first time. Wile in the strip district we visited several other shops included ‘Penn Mac’. That shop is known for it’s selection of imported cheeses and Italian meats. I love it for the food smells when you walk in. Just smells of Italy to me!

After this we took Zach up to ‘Mt Washington’. The view is remarkable for being mostly above the building tops so you get to see the city from a view high up, without having to fly to see it. My wife took the following panoramic view of it:

A view from mt wash

After this for there we passed through the Southside on Carson street, known for it’s MANY bars and pubs. Great place for a Bar crawl if you ever make it here. Then off to Oakland to see the majestic Cathedral of Learning, the worlds 4th largest educational building in the world and the tallest in the states. This is on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh, where I worked last.

CathOfLearn

Finally we came back to my place and hung out a bit. I showed Zach some of my collection, then he sat in on a Halo Mega Bloks build with me, helping me sort pieces. (That review will be coming later today!)

Zach is from Chicago and had I realized it earlier, his Chicago Cubs were in town to play my Pittsburgh Pirates. However, since we didn’t know this, we did watch the game on TV. Good fun. BTW, if you’re ever in Pittsburgh, try to take in a game at PNC Park. It’s absolutely one of the most beautiful baseball parks in the states. The view of the city from within the park is absolutely striking:

pnc-park

(That pic just doesn’t do it justice, trust me!)

We (my wife and I) took Zach back to his hotel room then went home ourselves. It was a long day and I got some decent sleep.

Saturday! The BIG day!! Finally the day of the LAN was here. I picked Zach up form the hotel and before going back to my place stopped at the ‘Original Oyster House‘. This at 10am…YES, Oysters at this time is perfectly acceptable here in the ‘Burgh.

original-oyster-house

Folks, this place is an ‘institution’! As you can see it’s been around since 1870. My family actually has some history with the place as my mom was the first barmaid they ever had, back in the late 1970s. Back to my place to get things ready for the LAN. As we were packing the vehicle, we all quickly realized we were running out of room and had to secure the cooler to the roof. I still didn’t have enough room to bring everything I wanted to. In fact, one of the rare hiccups of the day was that I forget the small trivia prizes I meant to bring. (Though I did NOT forget the door prizes or the tournament prizes, thank goodness)

On to the LAN!

2013-09-14 19.33.20_sm

As seen here on HFFL, some of my custom Halo Mega Bloks sets along with the official Forward Unto Dawn set, a McFarlane ODST Drop Pod, a nameplate I made from spare Mega Bloks, spelling out my gamertag. (I had one given to me by MEGA back at New York toy fair last year, but it went missing.) To the far right is a nerf gun that looks very close to a Spartan Laser. The plan is to paint this up to look like the one in the game!. Of special note, there is an enclosed case showing the Halo Mega Bloks Cryo Tube. This was given to me by Paul ‘StunkPK’ Knaack, a good friend and fellow Halo Mega Bloks collector. It’s electronic too!  There is a button switch under the case that when clicked turns on LED lights that light up both the Cortana micro figure as well as the insider of the Cryo tube! THANK PAUL!!!!

And as you can see, there are the different logos representing all the different portions of when HFFL has to offer to the community! From MaC Rounds (the upcoming Web-series), to the Halo Ricochet League, launching later this week, to the Spirit of Fire Podcast, and the HFFL gaming group!

2013-09-14 19.09.30_sm

Almost everyone that attended the LAN is in the pic. My wife took the shot, while there were also three others who for whatever reason didn’t get into the pic. Notice anyone you know? The tall fellow to the back left is POD Dust Storm of Podtacular and yep, that’s Eric ‘Gho57ayame’ Hewitt in the front row, as always with his backward facing hat on! LOL My bud Zach is in the very back peeking behind the fellow wearing the MLG hoodie.

2013-09-14 19.11.51_smThe winners of the HFFL FFA Tourney. Bmoody 2nd place, Sargoth 1st place, and Jet Lethal 3rd place.

2013-09-14 19.51.37_smHere are some of the items Dust Storm brought to show at the LAN. (Thanks Dust for all of your work to stream the LAN!)

2013-09-14 19.51.25_smOne of the few ladies to come to the LAN, Edie Kaye is gaming with Ghost!

The LAN came and went WAY too quickly. I only scheduled it for 3 hours. Amazingly enough, while I thought I’d only get people coming to it from local area, I had folks that came from Chicago, West Virginia, Ohio, Washington D.C. and all over Pennsylvania! This turned out much better than I had hoped for. I would have been happy with 8-10 people given the short notice. Instead, I ended up have 18. There were up to 26 who had registered, but late cancellations brought that number down. Still, I’m VERY happy with the turnout. Especially given it was my first go around with a LAN.

After this I let everyone know that they were welcome to join me at Primanti’s (yes again) in the Strip District. So the AFTER LAN eats commenced!

2013-09-14 21.48.55_smHere are Edie and myself.

Me  and some of the fellows. Sargoth to my immediate left, then Ghostayame then Joe ‘D Town Ninja’.

2013-09-14 22.23.51_smMany of the folks joined us for some good eats!

2013-09-14 22.36.56_smDust Storm, Me, and Ghost. I had to thank both for coming. Again Dust for streaming and both for commentating the FFA tourney. It was exciting to watch the tourney and even BETTER to hear Ghost commentating it. What a rush. He commentated part of Zach’s play, which both excited Zach and made him nervous. LOL

2013-09-14 22.37.21_sm

Dust giving us his best Superman pose, while showing off his Halo4GC Combatant t-shirt!

Primanti's after LANAnd finally a panoramic view of the crew!

We took Zach back to the hotel after and went home. I was exhilarated. I could hardly sleep all night, replaying the events of the weekend.

Sunday

Morning came and we picked up Zach at 11am. Yep…went to Primanti’s again, this time for a Colossal Fish Sandwich. Then off to the airport. I said my goodbyes to Zach. Unfortunately, Zach’s flight was cancelled late and he ended up having to stay one more night in Pittsburgh, but he made it home safe this morning (Monday).

Whew, long post yes…But it was worth reporting on. Such a FUN weekend. Lots of planning. Many folks asking me when the next one was going to be. Halo is ALOVE and well in Pittsburgh!

Ghost made a very nice tweet about it:

Ghosts tweet

BTW, Ghost, the waitress from the previous night said Hi! She misses you! LOL

I think I can deem this a success and definitely will have another one next year, if not sooner. I’ll plan this much sooner and I’m thinking I’ll rent a hall out for it so we can have a LOT more room for MORE folks to come on out.

HFFL Community night in Halo 4 tomorrow (Thursday Sept 12)!

Due to the LAN being on Saturday and I’m having guests early, I’m bumping up the HFFL community night to tomorrow, Thursday Sept 12. Normal time from 8-10pm.

We’ll play matchmaking. The number of people who show up tomorrow will determine what playlist we’ll be going in to. During the latter half I’m going to playtest some new Ricochet Maps I’ve made for the Halo Ricochet League, so come on out and game!
