Sarah Palmer done in retro style

This is the third of my wife’s retro styled (think Jetsons cartoon) Halo characters series.

I really like how this one turned out. She did all the design. I just asked for a few color changes to reflect more of her character. Note the teal nearly surrounding her face. That was a changed I asked for as it’s closer to her visor color. As well, the background went from being a plum color to the silver you see now. Again this is indicative of her armor.

I definitely think my wife got just the right amount of attitude in Palmer’s look.

So who do you want to see next? Looks like Lasky and the Arbiter are the top two picks, any others you’d want to see? Reply below and let me know.

Also, due to the amount of spamming account, I’ll need something more as proof that you’re a real person. XBOX Gamertag would be great. If you provide that, I’ll send you a message over LIVE to confirm. If other than that, make sure your preferred user name is the same as what you are referring to for proof. Again, apologies for that, but spammers kind of messed that up for everyone else…

A REAL forged Halo sword!

It slices, it dices, well, it slices anyway…

Okay, so it’s not made of energy, but it is really FORGED which in itself is very cool…or is it very hot? Anyway, check out the video below.

Now quite accurate, but still I would love to have it. I think it’s interesting how metal when heated to different temperatures will produce different colors. I learned something new to me. Achievment Unlocked! LOL

Master Chief done in retro style

This is the second of my wife’s retro styled Halo characters artwork. It’s also a slight take on the Jetsons as well.

retro-halo-chief

She’s asking me what character to do next. I’ve suggested Tom Lasky and Sarah Palmer. What character might YOU want to see her do in retro style? She’s thinking an alien, maybe a Jackal.

Cortana done in retro style!

My wife was creative this weekend and made this for me.

retro-halo-cortana_smI think it’s pretty cool. Definitely something that says ’50s/early ’60s style or something out of the Jetsons cartoon. She made another one with a different character of which I’ll show tomorrow.

Fan Custom model: The Spirit of Fire

First, before I get into the article, I want to thank HaloBungie.org for tweeting the original link to this, via their website. I followed that link and found a better one that had many more pics and text from the creator of the model, which I’ve reposted much of in the following article.

I chose to showcase this model for a couple of reasons. Not only is it the ship by which HFFL’s podcast “The Spirit of Fire” is named after:

Spirit of Fire Podcast LOGO_R-sm
It’s also going to be referenced to, if not actually shown in issue #5 of the Halo: Escalation comic book by Dark Horse.

Okay, on with this amazing custom model!

This model was created by Mark Kelso. He built this model out of LEGOs. Normally I do not publish works from that toy manufacturer. However, in this case, since it’s a custom and one not likely to be repeated, I decided to post it. (I’m a Halo Mega Bloks fan, through and through.)

Click on pics to make bigger. I’ll be adding Mark’s words (in YELLOW). Any commentary by me will be in BLUE.

SoF Space shot 1stTo whet your appetite, here is the finished model super imposed on a scene in space over a planet.

Now let’s explore how Mark built this, with an explanation in his words what it took to get him here.

Mark Kelso: Once upon a time, some knucklehead (that would be me) had the brilliant (or not) notion of building another Lego SHIP (Significantly Huge Investment in Parts). He thought it sounded easy enough. After all, other builders had cranked out epic, towering monuments of ABS homage.

Psssssh, yeah. What…an…idiot.

Over FOUR *insert explicative* YEARS LATER, we finally come to the end of one of THE most challenging endeavors of my life. Oddly enough, it wasn’t the construction of the ship that turned out to be the biggest challenge, but life itself.

I won’t bore you with the details, but suffice to say the moment I finally locked the final brick in place (January 27, 2014 at 2:07 pm, but who’s keeping track?) was an accomplishment that I’ll never be able to fully put into words.

But, for me it was about having the tenacity to keep getting back up, no matter how many times life knocked me down, to see this bloody project through to its completion! Chris, you were right. This really was my own personal “There and Back again.”

With the heaven-sent help of Heikki Anttila, who was involved with the original ship’s design and 3-D modeling, I was able to render a version of the ship that was far closer to the original design than I ever expected. There are, of course, variations which we’ll lovingly call artistic license. Nevertheless, upon completion, it seemed to me the overall look of the ship really WAS that of the SOF, and I felt it should be referred to as such.

Some Stats:
Height: 85 studs
Width: 70 studs
Length: 297 studs, or 7 feet (which, by the way, is just over the length of your average NBA player.

One of the things I think I was over the moon (pun intended) about with this space ship was the level of detail. The ultimate goal was to eliminate nearly every stud, giving this creation the appearance of a scale model. I’m callin’ it a win. On that point I was happier than the camel on hump day. Between that and the fact this behemoth’s done? Oh, yeah…downright giddy.

Folks, don’t forget that this is a SEVEN foot long model. It has THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of pieces in it. It’s not something we as consumers will ever get. However, if we ask nicely, maybe we can get a scaled down version from Mega Bloks. It never hurts to ask!

I salute Mark, his talent, and his incredible recreation of the Spirit of Fire.

Sweet, I have an article on a piece of my artwork at Halo Waypoint!

During nearly the first two weeks of this month, I released an image a day of minimalist artwork. Not minimal in detail so much as minimal in color. Once done, I talked with BS Angel about the artwork appearing there. She put up the full poster I made of all of the characters. Here’s the link on Waypoint.

Here again is the poster (click on it to make bigger):

Minimalist Compilation group shot v2_smI released one each a day in low-resolution. This poster shows them in much higher resolution though.

Here are each one in there lo-res format (click on each to show full image):

Custom Halo Mega Bloks mini Scorpion

GoodwillHunter (GWH) is back yet  again! Following up his Vulture from earlier this week, GWH brings us his version of a mini Scorpion.

Here are his pics and word on the mini-project:

I knew I had to do a Mini Scorpion, but this build was on life support until I rethought an important element. I tried a half dozen approaches to reducing the treads, and even considered cutting up an actual tread before going back to some of the guide images I used to do my original Scorpion rebuild. Looking at the renderings, I realized that black angled bloks might be the best way to simulate a reduced tread. Combined with some flat plates, I think they make for a pretty good tread pod. Building them from scratch also allowed me to make the rear pods shorter than the front ones as they appear in the games. GWH mini-scarab 3-4 side front I originally wanted to do green, but for the bloks I needed and had on hand, gray was the only way to go. GWH mini-scarab 3-4 side backI used peg and hole bloks to allow the tread pods to rotate, but they aren’t loose like on the original Scorpion. The turret also rotates and moves up and down…after the treads, this was the trickiest part of the build to figure out. GWH mini-scarab 3-4 side back TURRETHere it is next to my figure-scale Scorpion for a size comparison.GWH mini-scarab COMPARISONGWH’s attention to detail, even in these mini builds is amazing.

Custom Mega Bloks mini Halo Wars Vulture

GoodwillHunter (GWH) is back again with another awesome mini custom Halo Mega Bloks build. This time it’s the UNSC Vulture from Halo Wars.

For those who don’t know what this ship looks like, see the graphic below:
PORTFOLIO_VULTURE_LAYOUT_01

Think of it as the Mammoth of the skies and space. It’s bigger than a Pelican and packs much more of a punch.

So, GWH took it upon himself to build a mini version of this spectacular starship. Here is his custom and his words on it:
mini MB vulture 3-4 front

GWH: I really enjoyed building the mini Scarab, so I decided to try another reduced scale build. Looking at the bloks I had available, the Vulture seemed like it might work best, so that’s what I did.

mini MB vulture front

GWH: The cockpit and missiles determined the scale of this build. I started with a cockpit that was only 1 peg wide, but it became clear pretty quickly that it wouldn’t be in scale with the other elements of the ship.

mini MB vulture side

GWH: I wanted to keep as many features as possible, including removable missiles and the rotating front guns and rear launchers. At this size, however, a small grid plate had to stand in for the launcher’s projectiles.

mini MB vulture 3-4 back

GWH: I went back to the original 4-engine design at the back of the Vulture, which actually turned out pretty well at this scale.

mini MB vulture comparison

GWH: It came out to about half the length of my figure-scale Vulture, so it probably wouldn’t qualify for the Micro-Fleet, but was a fun build nonetheless. I think this Mini/Micro stuff may be addicting!

Here’s another look at his full sized (mini-figure scale) Vulture:
Vulture

You can see this and more of his custom Halo creations in an interview I did with him previously. Check those out HERE!

Now what I don’t understand is why Mega Brands (parent company of Mega Bloks) hasn’t hired him yet??? He’s got some MEGA talent, fer sure! (Canadian pun there fully intended)

My Halo Minimalist Art Project Characters Poster.

Okay, I decided to go with a compilation of the characters in relative scale (scale might be off a little, don’t judge….LOL).

This is a FREE download. However, if you choose to donate to the blog, I would very much appreciate it. Donations can be made via the donation link to the right on the main page (via Paypal).

Minimalist Compilation group shot v2_sm

I went back and forth with what color to use for the background given that I had different background colors for each character. In the end, I kept coming back to white. It’s simple, and clean, yet allows the characters to be the main focus. I did add a slight gradient as you see, just to differentiate the ground from the rest, to give a slight bit of depth.

If you do share this on another site, PLEASE give me credit for the graphic. If you would put a “by-line” as: Artwork by Sal at Halofanforlife.com. That would be appreciated as well.
