Toyfair video of Halo Mega Bloks toys!

I didn’t get the chance to go this year, so I was bumming. However, I found the link to his vid via a collector site and just had to post it.

Points to note during the video are:
• Light up sets with sound!
• The Pelican comes with Majestic squad (well, that’s what Annamarie the rep said. (Wow that’s awesome news)
• A first ever light up character, which I have to think is the Promethean Knight showing it’s skull face (can be seen at 4:30 in the vid).
• Commande Palmer fig. (Wow, it’s cool that MB is finally making named Spartans!)
• A neat build a ship theme that spans three sets. Individually the sets are a small set piece, together they build the Booster Frame from the Halo Legends cartoon.
• One of those minifigs is a Halo 4 Medic!! (As a side note, we can have fun with Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter here as they did voice-over in Halo 4 with these being the characters they were made to be)
• Four versions of the Cyclops Mech-Jungle, Desert, Arctic, Stealth
• Halo 4 grunts, Brute Stalker (YES), variant color Elites from Halo 4
• Hornet set with Vampire Hornet lights up and makes sounds. (I do wish the Hornet was made available by itself.) The Vampire again? Yikes, that ship is barely known and not ever in the FPS games. This is the only ship I questions being made again. (This would have been a better opportunity for the Anti-Air Wraith to have been made instead.)
• The new “Cobra” set lights up and “transforms” from vehicle to turret positions.
• Engineer Spartan (seen at 6:25)
• Several Promethean fig/armor sets (army building sets!)

All in all some great set coming out. And I do very much like that they are smaller sets. Makes it that much easier to collect for both kids and fans alike.

New York Comicon Cosplay!

Some I’ve already posted, but not all of them. Enjoy!

Sorry for the orientation of some. Stupid gallery settings won’t allow me to change that….

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 6 Homeward Bound

So here it is Sunday. I check out of the hotel and my friend Andrew picks me up and we go over to his house. I spend hours sorting out Mega Bloks. I was fortunate enough that the night previous, one of the Mega Brands folks did get a half a tub of bloks for me after mine had been taken. So there I was sprawling my bloks out on my friend’s parents living room floor sorting pieces. Some good conversation with his folks about all types of things from gardening to cultural history and more.

Andrew’s mom makes a fantastic Chicken and Potato dinner. MMMM MMM Good! Around about 11pm, I’m finally off to go back home. After a lay over in Harrisburg, PA for about 4 hours, I finish the trip and get home. Exhausted, but having had a lot of fun, despite the failed events of the previous day.

I made plenty of new friends within the Halo community, met my Halo heroes from 343 and Mega Brands and did manage to get at least some Halo swag.

One thing I know, I’m going to solemnly swear to get in shape for this next year!

Stay tuned for an article on Cosplay at the con. And later today my serval part review of Forward Unto Dawn Episode two, with a graphic novel to follow. (Likely tomorrow).

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 5: A Comedy of Errors.

Okay, this article is likely to be long. Some parts will be funny, others may be considered gross, but it ALL happened to me, and in the interest of reporting the whole truth as I recall it, it’s all in there.

So without further ado, what can only be described as epic fail after another in a comedy of errors, here is my Saturday experience of New York Comicon…

Midnight. After having had chili at my friends house just an hour before, we get to the hotel. I ask the attendant to please give me a wake-up call at 5:30 am. We had to be at the con by 10am for something special. (You’ll read this alter.) I settle in after about a half hour to get some sleep. Oh but wait, the “guests” above me decide to play STOMP THE YARD on their floor/my ceiling. I try like hell to ignore it, but FOUR hours later after some VERY choppy sleep due to their stomping, I couldn’t do it anymore. I called the attendant to contact them to tell them to stop making noise. And as any immature party goers would do, they stopped for a couple minutes then stomped more and starting tossing things on the floor to make yet more noise.

I called the attendant again and told him he had 10 minutes to get them to stop or I was calling the cops. As it were, I only have about a hour left to try and get some sleep before getting up for the next day of the con. Well, the people above just kept at it and got even worse. So yeah, I called the cops.

About a half-hour later one of the cops came down to my room and explained what they did. It was a marijuana party upstairs. They arrested 3 people. One person had a broken leg. Hmm, maybe form stomping? Anyway, the kids upstairs didn’t want to take him to the hospital because they were high off their asses and didn’t want to get in trouble. (There’s a life lesson in there folks…LEARN IT!)

So at this point I try to get the remaining 30 minutes of sleep until my wake-up call. Oh, but the attendant doesn’t give me that call… No instead I get a text from one of my buds that they are coming to get us at 6:45 instead of 6:30, so we have extra time. But wait…the text was sent at 6:30am. Damn, I had to rush now. I was already tired and now felt ill from the chili. Having to race to get ready sure as hell didn’t help anything. Somehow I manage to be ready in 25 minutes. A little late, but the guys didn’t pick us up until then anyway, so okay…

We get to the train and depart. Now comes the gross part… Before I get to that, let me say that I learned from my first experience in New York 15 years prior that you should NEVER not have a roll of toilet paper handy…

So yeah, the chili kicks in and I have to take a dump…while on the train. Thank GAWD there are bathrooms on the train. My bud Jon shows me where they are. He stays just outside the door as it’s busted. I go in and immediately notice that some jackhole plugged up the toilet. Well, I can’t help it, I have to go. While doing my business, someone tries to enter the bathroom despite Jon trying to stop them. The door opens enough that I know at least 3-4 people got a good sight of me on the toilet. There’s practically no toiler paper, so I give a call to my bud Andrew who’s in the next car over to bring me my roll of TP. He brings the whole back pack. Once again the door opens, this time it’s Andrew. I have to carefully, waddle the 5 ft to the door and retrieve my pack with the TP. Success! And at least the faucet and dryer works. Thank GAWD! We head back to our seats where two others from our group are and ….our seats are taken. I have to stand for awhile. Finally one of the other guys gives up his seat for me, knowing I’m feeling like crap.

We get into Manhattan on time and head for the Con. At 10:30 am Frank O’Conner, Franchise Development Director of Halo 4 at 343 will be signing special Mega Bloks Forward Unto Dawn posters.

I’m about 4th on line. I had also purchased a McFarlane Halo 4 Master Chief the day before, so I had Frank sign both the fig and the poster. No sooner does he sign it that I start to put a rubber band on the poster and RIPPPPP. Damn rubber band caught the end of the poster and tore a large gash into it.

Does it end there? Nope, not by a long shot. I’m tired, sick, pissed off…I need a break and it’s only 10:45 am. So I trek my mesh folding chair down to the VERY crowded lobby, set it up by the windows away from most of the people and just sit. I become the meeting place for my group of friends at the con as they stop by from time to time to check on me and rest themselves. However, twice I had to get up and go to the bathroom, only to get sick both times as well. I know I grossed out a Batman and Robin duo of cosplayers, but heh, haven’t they seen worse fighting the likes of Clayface? LOL

At this point I’m back at my resting area. I don’t even go into the con until near the end of the day. I was lucky enough that I stopped by the Aliens/Colonial Marines video game booth, only to run into none other than Lance Hendrikson himself. He’s known for his fame as the android in Aliens as well as the voice of Admiral Hackett in Mass Effect 3. So this was a great thing. I asked him for a photo and he was all to happy to take one with me.

Very cool guy!

I walk around a little bit more and run into this giant:

It’s Kratos from the God of War series. This statue had to be about 12 feet tall.Impressive!

I went back to the Mega Bloks booth, my bud Sparky from Mega Brands gives me the three wristbands needed to get into a very exclusive Halo 4 343/Mega Bloks LAN/afterparty.

I set up the chair between the two escalators going into and out of the con and do some people watching. NO NOT STALKING…lol. Surprisingly even among all the people and action, I get a little sleep.

Around 6pm I and my bud Jon walk over to the hotel where the party is going to happen.

We’re early so we just take a few to rest. Sparky comes by and buys us a drink. Man, I had the chance for whatever I wanted…but feeling as I did, I just got a Gingerale.

I get in line for the party being first in line. Woot! I’m about to experience the pinnacle of Halo Fandom. I’ll get to meet folks from 343 as well as Mega Brands the makers of fantastic Halo Mega Bloks sets.

Mega Brands Folks:

Tanya, Public Relations and Communications Specialist at Mega Brands. She’s a really cool lady. Got to hang out and talk with her a bit during the con and at the part.

Bisma, Director, Brand Management at Mega Brands. Another cool lady. I helped her build a positionable tower of Mega Bloks. Really nice person.

My buddy Sparky and I, with Deedree (spelling) the blonde lady over my shoulder and Jen barely peeking over Sparky’s shoulder. All from Mega Brands and again, awesome people. All the folks from Mega are class acts.Professional, friendly, and willing to listen to their fans. I can’t say enough good things about them. I’m so happy to have any association with them.

343 personalities:

Alison Stroll, Senior Producer on Halo 4. She’s a fun lady. Didn’t hesitate to tell my to STFU about apologizing for something I though I had overstepped my bounds on. She’s just a real person. Love that!

Tyler, Producer formerly the Toy Liaison between 343 and their licensee partners and I. I talked his ear off, but he was all to happy to reciprocate. I think over the course of the weekend I talked to him for 2 hours. Really good guy.

Here is Sotaro Tojima, Sound producer extraordinaire at 343 and I. He was SO thankful for all of the input I gave him about the sound quality of the game and music. Thanks for the follow on Twitter Toji!

All starts well, I get several games of Halo 4 in (an article later on that and full game play breakdown). There are also a few rooms with Mega Bloks to build which I enjoy for a bit. Mostly though I walk around talking with all the personalities. I meet a couple of community folk too like BravoMLG and Claude from HBO (Halo.Bungie.Org). Play some more game, build more, and am having fun. I had only ONE alcoholic drink and Jim Beam and Coke. Again, I don’t want to push it as I’m still ill. I did give out about 30 business cards and got some in return. All in all going good so far at the party.

Sparky comes by and hands me what I consider to be a distinct honor. It’s a nameplate of my gamertag made completely out of Mega Bloks. WOW, it’s awesome and I was all too excited to receive it. Though I don’t think I came off as that. (I was trying to keep my elation inside).

The party is only 4 hours long and let me tell you it goes by FAST. Near the end, my chest starts to hurt. Uh oh, not good. I go and sit down by myself. Several people stop by to say hello, then ask if I’m okay. One of the Mega folks sits with me and tries to calm me down. I’m given some water to cool off, but none of it works. The manager of the party area is concerned and after about 20 minutes they call the paramedics. Now before this I was given a whole tub of Mega Bloks, about 20 of the Forward Unto Dawn posters (of which I was going to give out here on the blog), a Halo 4 Mega Bloks Warthog set, 3 swag bags (of which the contents of two I was going to give out on the blog) and the nameplate. I was taken to another area for privacy and left those things at the bar.

I was given an EKG and was okay, but my chest was still hurting. I was given seltzer water and taken outside for some fresh air. I have had anxiety attacks before and knew this was one. The paramedics wanted to take me to the hospital but it was my decision. So I decided not to go. (BTW, I strongly encourage if this happens to you folks to GO to the hospital and dont’ take after me.)

I get back to the party as it’s winding down and wait a second…my stuff is GONE! I don’t know if the Mega folks packed it up or it was stolen. But it’s gone. Sigh…of all the stuff, losing the nameplate is the worst.

My buds, the brothers Jon and Andrew call their folks to come get us and all of the stuff the other guys had. This is now about 12:30am. Their folks are about an hour and a half away on Long Island. We get picked up and get back to the hotel about 3am. I knew I wasn’t going to make my bus in the morning…

And so my last day of Comicon comes to a close. Yikes. so many fails. But there was some redeeming moments at the LAN at least and to the folks at 343 and Mega Brands I owe a HUGE Thank You! (Which I’ll be writing out later in greater detail).

Whew, long article…. Final Part 6, Homeward Bound.

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 4: TGIF

While I had intended to get to the convention early on Friday, sleep dictated otherwise. And I needed it. I was extremely sore from all of the walking around the day prior.

My friends picked me and another bud up from the hotel and we took the train in from Ronkonkoma, New York (on Long Island) into Manhattan.

On the train I shot this (well actually one of my friends held the cam, while I talked):

So we get to the Convention with no incident. I head up the the Mega Bloks booth. Hey, there’s a rendering of the UNSC Mantis. Too bad the photo didn’t come out so well…

I knew my friend “Sparky” of Mega Brands loved Castle Greyskull, so I sought out a convention exclusive Skeletor letter opener and gave it to him:

I did a little walking around. Saw some good cosplay. (I’ll be posting all of my cosplay pics in another article later).

I got some Mega Bloks stickers from the folks at the booth.

Sadly only 2 of them made it through the trip…

Okay here is one cosplay. It’s Salvator from Borderlands 2. I was going to do this for the release date of the game, but didn’t get my costume done in time.

Oh and there was this guy…not sure who he’s supposed to be, LOL.

I didn’t really do a ton the rest of the day. Just milled about, took cosplay pics and rested when needed.

Got back on the train around 7:30pm. These three fellows are some of the guys I hung with the whole weekend.

Jon “Cross”; Andrew “Blue”; Mike “Sam” All three are part of my gaming group “Rated Mature”

As in the caption, they’re fellows from my gaming group. ratedmature.NET (If you go to .com, I’m NOT responsible. You’ve been warned)

We got back and went to Jon and Andrew’s house where their parents were waiting with Chili. (Something that I came to regret the next day…)

Next, Part 5: A Comedy of Errors

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 3: The Thursday War.

Comicon, finally!

At this point it was about 10am. Not many people there yet and the con doesn’t officially start until 3pm. So I sat here in the lobby for 5 more hours…

I did have one 343 sighting. I ran into Sotaro Tojima (Sound Editor Extraodinaire!). I introduce myself and thank him graciously for his work on Halo 4 and can’t wait to talk with him again at the after party.

I run into “Mister Chief.”

I’m lucky enough to get into the right line that I’m in the Halo booth immediately after the con opens!

They were giving away this awesome shirt to the first 100 players:

Hmm, I may or may not have an extra one of these…if so, you may want to stay tuned for a contest that could possibly happen to win this, possibly…

Oh, I should make note that I got to play Slayer on Ragnarok. And hells yeah, I played with the Mantis! In it I destroyed another Mantis, a Banshee, 2 ghosts, and about 15 spartans. Yeah, it just KICKS THAT MUCH ASS! I never even noticed that the Scorpion was missing. Believe me, you won’t either. The Mantis moves fast. Much faster than the Scorpion. It’s dexterous. You can turn in it much easier than the tank. It won’t topple over when hit with heavy firepower. It won’t trip up if it goes over a cliff. It just falls straight down. Something to think about while using during gameplay. Does this vehicle get my approval? Um, Does a bear sh…er nevermind. HELL YEAH it does. I’m excited to play with this again!!!!!!

I’m a HUGE Iron Man fan, so when I saw this display I had to take a pic. (It’s actually two pics merged together as I didn’t have room to get it all in one shot.) The pathways were freakin’ narrow.

It’s only Thursday and I wanted to take it easy since I still had two more days of Convention to enjoy. So I hit the only other booth I really wanted to see that day. Mega Bloks! (Sorry for the fuzzy pics on some, sigh…)

Now here’s the thing…the Forward Unto Dawn set was supposed to have a blue Storm Elite now it has a Gold Elite General? I think that was a mistaken figure put up. But I’ll ask.

Interior work stations.

Cryo Tube bay

Fully stocked armory!

The cryo bay in the FuD set can also be purchased separately, though not with a light up Cortana.

Grr, my only shot of the Mega Bloks Mantis didn’t take well, but here it is anyway:

Believe me folks, that set is AWESOME! Some very cool unique parts. I got to “play” with it for a little bit.

I got to build something on the Mega Bloks build wall, so I chose my logo (albeit in the wrong colors and the colors I needed weren’t available):

I decided to hit one more booth. The Square Enix booth and found these:

These look great. Much better than the Reach figures. Chief (Halo 4 version) is available next year. I’m not collecting this line, but I WILL get Master Chief.

After this I meet up with a friend for a bit then head off to the hotel on Long Island that I’ll be staying at and so ends the first day of Comicon for me.

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 2 ” And we’re off!”

So part two picks up on the day before New York Comicon (NYCC). Excited, I’m packing my bags, checking the list of things to bring, MANY times and pumping myself up for what I expect to be a fun, though exhausting experience. I’m on a shoestring budget though. So I had to plan accordingly. Tickets were $85 for 4 days. So how to get there? Airfare was out of the question, just too expensive, plus then there would have been an expensive cab ride from there into Manhattan. Train? Hmm, maybe. Ultimately I decided on going “Greyhound.” I haven’t been on a travel bus in a LONG time. Let me say, chances are it will be a LONG time again before I do so.

My bus is to leave at 10:30 Wednesday night. It’s an express from Pittsburgh to New York and will get there approximate at 6am. My wife takes me to the bus station, we say our ” I love yous” and I’m off to catch my bus.

I’m the first to board, yippee! I get to pick anywhere to sit. So I promptly go to the back. I figure I’ll be next to the bathroom, you know, just in case. Plus I won’t have anyone kicking my seat behind me. Okay, not too bad. Everyone else boards and we get going. Almost immediately I realize my mistake. I’m sitting on top of the rear wheels. Jes..Chr..jiminy cricket, holy freakin’ sh*( can I feel every bump in the road. I’m getting tossed around like a salad on a cooking show. It does settle down a little though once we get on the highway.

Now I recalled from years ago that the back seats were the ones to take because they used to be three seats next to each other thereby making it possible to sleep on your side with cushions underneath. Hmm, someone decided in the two decades or so since I had ridden a travel bus to change that. Now the window seat sat higher by about 3 inches, the middle seat was normal, and the third seat…NON EXISTENT! Damn. there was just a flat hard surface there. Somehow though, I make due. I prop my head and upper body on the window seat, have the seat belt buckle pushing into my side with most of my lower body and legs on the second chair. My lower legs and feet get to rest on the hard surface. This last for oh about two minutes as someone has to use the bathroom and my feet were resting on the door.

Yikes, this is going to be a painful trip in to New York. So I reposition myself to be on my back. I’m a big guy, so between that and the fact of the seat belts/buckles gouging me in my back, I’m having to lay halfway on/off the seats. This isn’t working so I try my side again. and then….yep another bathroom visit by someone else. Am I ever going to get some sleep on the bus?

Well, as it turns out I get maybe an hour’s worth during the 8 or so hour trip. We arrive on time, in fact a little early. So I step out onto the streets of New York. It’s the third time I’ve been here. I LOVE the city. It’s full of life even at just before 6am on Thursday. AS I round a corner I see on some buildings this:

Yes, I’m a Halo fan for life, however, there is the occasional other game I’ll play. Borderlands is one of them and yes, I’ve played B2. So I had to take that picture. Larger than life, but that is New York!

I seek out a Starbucks to settle in for a little bit and get adjusted. A pumpkin spice latte and blueberry scone later and I’m feeling okay. Who, wait a second who is that? Ed Begley Jr. walks into Starbucks. Wait, really? Yes indeed. Okay cool, I’m in New York less than a half hour and already I see a celebrity. Yep, I am indeed in New York.

My cell phone needs charged so I plug in at the convenient outlet next to my table, tweet a little and just people watch for a bit. I’ve got nothing to do for a few hours, so this little bit of time at Starbucks helped to kill it. So I’m looking out the window and I see this:

What the hell is a “Vactor 2100?” Turns out it is some kind of industrial sized street cleaner. Damn, I’ll say.

Now it’s a little before 7am, so what to do? I saunter on over (yeah, it’s better than shuffling…LOL) to Good Morning America at Times Square. Along the way I see these sights.

This is not the PAX I was looking for. (That was a few weeks ago and I couldn’t make it, dang.)

Times Square from one side.

And from the other side.

I’m in the audience at street side.

I see Laura Spencer in the window:

That’s George Stephanopoulos seated next to her and yeah, he really is that short.

It’s apparently KISS day at GMA as people are getting their faces painted like the members of the band KISS. I was asked to do so but politely declined. (I think I made the wrong decision there now in hindsight, but eh, fugedaboudit!)

Right across the street is Toys R Us Times Square, THE flagship store for TRU.

Star Wars Angry Birds. Really? Okay, I love both franchise separately but together?

It should be mentioned here that I wanted for nearly 2 1/2 hours for the store to open. Really 10am? Come on TRU, get your crap together. Open this store earlier. THere was a line of people waiting to get in. So I head right for the Mega Bloks area.

NO freakin’ single minifigure packs for Halo. Wait seriously? This is the flagship store and there is a deal going on currently that is buy either $30 or $50 worth of Mega Bloks and you get a free figure. How can that be if there are no figures in the store. I ask the manager this. They say the run out of things all the time. Um, hello, flagship store…should NEVER run out of things. Yeah, it’s New York, and there are a lot of people to buy stuff, however you’d think that this store should practically have it’s own warehouse to replenish items, especially sale items as needed.

Oy vey! Well that’s the end of this part.

Next part I finally get into Comicon…Part 3: The Thursday War

New York Comicon, then HFFL experience. Part 1 “The Ramp UP”

Okay, so what is Comicon? Most of you know that it’s a huge “festival” of people from around the world that gather to buy comics, cosplay, check out new TV shows and/or movies via panels usually with celebrities and so on. However, it’s so much more than that. The people…my gawd, the people.

I’ve only been to smaller “Cons” to this point, though I had an idea of what New York Comicon (NYCC) might be. Well let me tell you folks, I was floored. I had heard the weekend might draw 100,000 people. Um yeah…I think it did.

Let’s just say that when walking the convention floor it was practically “nut to butt” (a saying heard often in Navy Bootcamp). So many people you couldn’t help but bump into them. I made it worse by constantly having my backpack on and walking around with a large folding fabric mesh chair. I touched and was touched by more people this weekend then likely in the rest of my life combined! (Liberally use of sanitary gel was used repeatedly over the weekend due to this, LOL)

Hmm, so wait a minute, how did this all come about anyway? Glad you asked. I’m a huge fan of Halo Mega Bloks and knew they would have a booth at NYCC so I had something to look forward to besides the rest of the usual convention type stuff. I also figured on 343 being there with Halo 4 to try out and I was right. I follow several of the 343ers on Twitter and through their posts and/or conversations I had with them found out that indeed they were going to be there with the most anticipated game of the year, Halo 4.

I happen to be honored to know one of the high-up folks at Mega Brands (parent company of Mega Bloks) and he had something special planned, a LAN party. Woot, playing LAN at Comicon! I was excited. I happened to mention the LAN, but not the specifics to one of the 343ers and bam, things really started to change. Behind closed doors both Mega and 343 hatched a plan to have a shared Halo LAN/Afterparty. Yours truly was invited by both to come to the event. That by the way is an honor I do not and will NEVER take for granted (something I think any other Halo fan should keep in mind if they have been or ever will be invited to participate in). Much more about this later though.

So I started planning on going to Comicon. I got a 4-day pass figuring I wan’t sure what I wanted to do the whole time, so this would give me more time and options available. As the days got closer to NYCC excitement grew and I was heavy with anticipation…

Stay tuned for following parts of the story to see how the whole weekend unfolded. Believe me, you are going to enjoy, laugh, be appalled, and laugh again…

Back from New York Comicon!

Okay folks I have LOTS to discuss. I’ve got to write it all up. Here’s what you can expect over the course of the next two days:

• My “diary” of events of the trip. This will be a series of articles that will be more than just Halo related. It hopefully will read more like a story of my trip.
• Summary of New York Comicon. Think of this as the “Cliff Notes” version of above that pertains to the Con itself with more Halo highlights.
• Halo specific related convention news.
• A VERY Special Halo LAN/after party with pics and some great news about Halo 4 and Halo Mega Bloks.
• Thank you articles for those who helped me along the way during the con.
• Cosplay people! (Pics)

Beyond the convention stuff, I’m also going to squeeze in a multipart review of Forward Unto Dawn episode two, much like I did for the first episode. To follow in a day or two will be the unofficial Graphic Novel for episode two as well.

As I said, LOTS to do, so be patient please and I’ll get to blogging all this stuff momentarily.
