Frustrations abound for me today…

While you’d think I’d be happy to have just found out that people other than pros have now been invited to the Halo 4 Global Championship, I’m not. Call me jealous. It’s fine. That is an accurate description.

In a previous article:

Halo 4 Global Championship….VERY skewed…

I mentioned my disdain that pro players were being invited to this tournament. Especially given that they hadn’t earned their way there by competing and WINNING a spot in the Halo 4 Global Championship.

Here’s the specific paragraph:
Also, NO frackin’ way I’d invite people in to play that didn’t participate in the competition. If you’re going to invite pro-players (which already scants the competition to a pro winning it all), AND inviting 4v4 teams instead of straight up FFA (some where some were not), then where do you stop inviting people? Community leaders may say they would like a shot too. Do you allow them in? What about those smaller groups/sites/etc (like me for instance) that while not as well known, put their life into Halo? See where I’m going with this? Regardless that those pros being invited have to pay to get Seattle, the point is they did NOT work for it in the ACTUAL competition. Or even if they had and not qualified, then maybe they should not be going…just sayin’.

Now I’ve come to find out that sites like Ready Up Live, GrifballHub and others have been invited. Again, you may think, “Hey, that’s cool community people are getting to go.” I know I should feel that way too, but as I mentioned above, where then do these invites stop? Will lesser known/smaller sites get invites? How about random invites to everyday Halo gamers? I don’t think that’s going to happen for the latter two. With respect to RUL, they’ve had PLENTY of recognition. Dan Hamill AKA Greenskull, last year was invited to go to the set of “Forward Unto Dawn.” There he got to interview various cast members. As well, he got recognition in Halo 4 by way of his hometown being the used as the name of a manufacturer of Halo armor (Look up the War Master armor. “Lethbridge Industrial” is the manufacturer. Dan is from Lethbridge.). He has some kind of relationshisp with Microsoft and has had recognition by them in the form of an award. Now he and some of his staff are getting to go to the Halo 4 GC. With respect, when is that going to end? RUL is NOT a Halo only site. They promote and play many other games. If they were Halo centric and/or ONLY Halo, I would be inclined to feel differently, but I’m not.

I’m not against GirfballHub from being invited. They ARE Halo centric. However, I’m not seeing any of the myriad of smaller lesser known sites being invited to this. My buddy Dust from Podtacular got an invite. I’m happy for him. But again, he’s been around a LONG time and is well known in the Halo community.

…Sorry I wasn’t able to get into Halo earlier on folks. I guess that makes me less of a Halo fan??? Or does it?

I’m coming up on two years now with HaloFanForLife. During that whole time I’ve unfortunately been unemployed. Yet, I still found a way to get the money to create the site, add content, much of which cost me money in the form of toys and other collectibles to review. The few conventions I’ve gone to were again through my own monies. I’ve never let this be known before now but I initially did not have lodging secured for New York Toy Fair. Yet, I was still going to go, even if it meant I would have had to stay in a hotel lobby all night or some all-night restaraunt. I was very willing to make that sacrifice to be at the convention so I could cover Halo. Crazy? Maybe, but it shows the amount of devotion and the lengths I am willing to go through to be a part of the community and to promote Halo.  I have no sponsors for the blog, I have NO advertising. And only just a few weeks ago put up a donation button of which only two people have donated money. I make NO money from my site (like many larger site do) I’m not in this to make money from my fandom. You can call me “stupid” for not allowing myself to cash in on my fandom or using it to propel myself into a business. I”m NOT about that. In fact I had this very discussion last night with fellow fans and gamers. My wish is to be employed by 343. That would be the pinnacle for me and the best most direct way to represent the community.

I know these larger sites do a bit for the Halo community. They are more effective because they are bigger….and they are only going to get bigger when they keep getting all of this recognition. So I direct you towards the smaller sites. Many of us are one person operations. Using myself as an example, I put no less than 4-5 hours a day into my site be it through the blog itself, or social media in twitter and facebook. As well, I game daily typically 4-5 hours a day in Halo. I’d do even more, but much of the rest of the time awake is spent either looking for employment or spending it with my family. Some would say I have no life. I’d say it’s a HALOva life…

So I hope you folks will forgive me if I feel just a bit jealous here. I’m already quite upset with the whole Global Championship tourney. The cheating going on, the disconnect by 343 to recognize said cheating and deal with it head on, etc. Yeah, I know it seems counter to my thoughts on this to want to be invited to a tourney that I feel is fatally flawed. But one reason I’d have liked an invite is just to see that 343 does indeed care about or at least recognizes smaller sites. As well, I want a non-pro to win this. So in that regard, jealousy aside, I do want one of these invited community members to win. And I mean that sincerely.

Beyond all of this, I’m also today dealing with someone on a LEGO collecting site using MY name to promote my reviews of Halo MEGA BLOKS sets. So my identity is being stolen in a sense, by a competitor of a legally binding Halo licensee no less. I’ve contacted the admin of that site and they are NOT being helpful at all.

On top of all of this, I now find that I’m possibly two months from losing my home. Let that sink in and you can see why my day has been horrendous.

So again, forgive me folks if I can’t deal with all of this crap in the appropriate way today. It’s just a bit much to take in. I’m working hard on my blog’s two year anniversary with the LAN event being the biggest portion of that. I’m trying to make a name for myself as well as promote small sites, individual fans of Halo, etc. I’m for the little guy out there as I am one of them too.

Maybe I just need to step away from the computer today. But it’s all still going to be there regardless so what’s the point?

So yeah, I’m extremely frustrated today. So again apologies to you dear readers. I do not mean to upset any of you with my posts, tweets etc. I just need to get this all off my chest. Venting in this manner is much better than trying to keep it in. Well, that’s how I see it anyway.

I guess I should mention this in closing, I suffer from anxiety and depression and yes take meds for that. I do NOT shy away from this condition nor speaking about it publically. One of the unfortunate side effects is that it compels me to react to situation in what others see as over the top reactions. I can’t apologize for this folks. It’s part of who I am. To deny that would be to deny myself. That’s something I won’t ever do. I of course hate that I have these conditions, but it is what it is. Hopefully you can understand me better through this and why I sometimes post the way I do. The ONE thing I know that would virtually wipe that out is finally finding a job again. Can anyone help?

“A Fistful of Arrows” by Levi Hoffmeier, a review.

I’ve known about this fan-made comic book for sometime. However, I hadn’t taken the time to check it out.

For those who don’t know, “A Fistful of Arrows” is a comic book created by Levi Hoffmeir. It’s the story of what happens directly after the events of Halo Reach. Specifically the story revolves around Spartan Jun A266.

Without further ado, let’s get into the review of this fun comic book! (click images to make bigger)

fist-ffoaThe first thing I’m going to say is that it’s clear this comic book was created by a fan who is passionate about Halo and his art. The cover alone gives you that sense. The story opens up with a scene from well before the fall of Reach. As to exactly when, it’s not given, however, it deals with Innies (Insurrectionists), so I can only assume it’s some time before Reach. The only thing is, curiously, the former Noble 6 isn’t represented in this comic book. So perhaps the events take place between the time of his death and the start of Reach (the video game). I’ll have to ask Levi about this.

AFoA 05
From the first page’s panels, you can already tell that Levi has put a great deal of effort into creating a fantastic comic book. You get the sense that there is a conflict in Jun that needs to be resolved. All of his fellow Noble teammates sense it.

With efficient pacing Levi moves his tale back and forth between this early Innie event and the battle of Reach.

AFoA 13

Above is but a sampling of his amazing artwork throughout the comic book.

Below we see Emile in all his glory, without the now-classic skull carvings on his helmet that we came to know in Reach.

AFoA 19

Levi does a masterful job of portraying each of Noble’s team members as we known their personalities from Reach. In this respect his writing is fully in keeping with the Halo universe.

His take on an AI superintendent is SPOT ON, as seen by the follow page from his book:

AFoA 28

That page gave me the feels I had from Halo 3: ODST. So here again, Levi has done a great job on blending together the Halo universe we know from the games, into his comic book.

AFoA 30This breathtaking two-page spread in his comic further illustrates his artistic talent. I’d LOVE to have this as a poster without the text bubbles! Levi???

At that point we’re roughly mid-way through the story and Noble squad is pursuing the Innie from the beginning of the tale. Liberal uses of  dark greens and blues help to convey an environment which is currently being hampered by a rainstorm. Couple this with the red colors he uses, it helps to illustrate the important mission Noble is undergoing.

AFoA 41

The page above shows what I was talking about with regards to the greens and blues. IN the story, Jun is keeping an eye on the mission’s target, utilizing several Spartan skills.

Shortly after this page, we jump back to the future events that take place right after Reach, with Jun escorting Halsey away from the action. I don’t want to spoil that part for you if you haven’t read it, so I’m leaving out the bulk of the description of what happens here. I’ll give you these two pages though:

AFoA 65AFoA 68

Again, Levi’s artwork is fantastic. The immediate above image is a testament to that. Classic Armor Lock. The page has strong contrasts of dark and light with bold use of color in the right areas. (Did I just sound like one of those uppity art critic here? Sorry, LOL)

As the story comes to an end, we’re treated to a small event that is reminiscent of one that happened in the Forward Unto Dawn mini-series. (Again, I’ll save that spoiler for you to view yourself.)

The comic book isn’t over though. Levi then continues on details of some of the characters in play in the comic book, as well as showcasing the city of Quezon, where some of his story takes place. There is yet more, but I’ll leave that to you to discover.

A Fistful of Arrows is just about one of the BEST pieces of fan-fic I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Now that it has been revealed that Jun escaped and is ALIVE, via a Halo avatar item, curiously:
Commander Palmer Armor

can we hope that Levi’s tale will be intertwined with and become official canon?

This Halo fan hopes so!

Follow up to Pro-player cheating in the Halo 4 Global Championship.

Today, I had several tweets to Connor White, the pro-player who admitted to cheating. My position on what he did has not and will not change.

What has changed is my willingness to further discuss this topic with exception to this article. I do NOT want to rock the boat in the Halo community. I do NOT want to be “that guy.” However, that said if I should lose “street cred” over my stance, so be it. It would pain me if I did though. With 343 and community leaders and especially you my readers, fans, and followers. The whole point of my stance is to uphold what I believe SHOULD be the right position for the WHOLE of the community. If others disagree and take the side of Connor here, then it will truly diminish in my opinion the community of Halo. How can we put up with blatant cheating?

It’s safe to assume others have cheated in the Halo 4 Global Championship. What makes it worse with Connor White is his being the co-owner of AGL (Arena Gaming League) and their affiliation with 343 by using Halo in their tournaments. He should never have participated in the competition, let alone cheat in it.

What it seems like Connor isn’t understanding is that his very actions by just PLAYING in the competition can put himself, AGL, 343 and Virgin gaming into some very serious legal recourse if gamers who played in the competition file a lawsuit. It’s called the Federal Statutory Unfair Competition Law. Putting his admitted cheating aside, his very playing in the competition means other gamers could file a class action law suit against 343/Virgin gaming. Connor seems to not realize that his playing knocked out hundreds if not thousands of other gamers from potentially placing in one of the top 4 spots for any week he played in the competition.

Yes, he says he earned his position week 2. However, it’s not his skill that is being called into question. Because he, through AGL, has a business relationship with 343, and that being legally defined as an affiliation, his mere playing regardless of placement causes the whole competition’s legitimacy to come into question.

At this point, the only portion of the contest that has been fair has been the RTX qualifier. The Gamescom qualifier coming up would be the only other portion that would be legit given the restrictions placed on those participating in the in-person portions of this tournament. So what does that mean then? Well, by my description of this, I’m saying the WHOLE online portion of the competition should be scrapped and ONLY those 16 players who will qualify from the in-person convention events should be eligible for the finals in Seattle. Yes, that would likely piss of those thousands of players who put in the time into the competition. However, I would hope that they would see through this to what my proposal means. It means that they in some part would be vindicated. The only ones who would be really affected by disqualfying the online portion of the event at this point would be those who did qualify in the on-line portion. Given that one of them has admitted to cheating and stated others are doing it, DQing what amounts to 16 gamers to this point or 20 by the end of this week, in order to have a completely legitimate pool of qualifiers from the in-person events is the right thing to do, IMO.

That would then completely negate not only Connor’s actions but those others who cheated in the competition. Beyond this, the very idea that alternate accounts were allowed at all, while it may not be illegal, was tacky and NOT in the best interest of fair play and good sportsmanship. How and why 343/Virgin Gaming came to that decision is beyond me.

Again, I want to point out that I am a HUGE supporter of 343 for having continued the Halo franchise. But the decision to allow alt accounts to be okay in the competition is something I can not nor will ever agree with.

Further, due to Connor’s association with AGL, those who were invited to play via AGL contests should ALSO not be allowed to participate. Again, invites to those who did not legitimately secure a qualifying position while not illegal is VERY tacky and unsupportive of the greater Halo community. If those invites are upheld, then at the VERY LEAST Connor White should be completely disqualified from the competition. That decision would be in the best interest for the WHOLE community.

Connor, if you’re reading this, I know it may seem unfair or over the top, the position I’ve taken. However, young man, you MUST realize that your actions may have serious repercussions. With respect to you, I don’t know if it’s that you are too young to understand unfair competition laws or that you didn’t know of them. Or if your playing was truly just to have fun or was motivated by greed and/or to knock out others who might be able to give you a run for the money in the competition. The whole point is, you ARE affiliated with 343 through AGL. Do the RIGHT thing and completely remove yourself from the Halo 4 Global Championship, less you further divide the Halo community, make a mockery of the tournament, and possible cause legal recourse. This would ultimately be a small sacrifice on your part to save face as well as keep from harm 343, Virgin Gaming and AGL. Show this measure of respect for the greater good of the WHOLE Halo community.

Okay all that said, I will no longer comment on this topic. Any replies from Connor or others via tweets that I made earlier today will go ignored. Any replies to this article here on the blog that seek to thrash me will not be posted.

Respectfully,
-Sal

Toy Review: Mega Bloks Booster Frame

Mega Bloks Booster Frame: Made from 3 sets designed to make this: Sets #97131, #97133, and #97170

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 20 minutes (5 to take apart existing smaller sets, 5 to sort pieces and to to build)
Set Piece Count: 162 (piece count only includes parts for Booster Frame, base and EVA minifig. No weapons or the other two minifigs counted toward piece count)
Minifig: Teal EVA Spartan
Weapons: N/A
Accessories: N/A
Price: $30 (This is actually $10 each for three numbered sets)

And on with the pics!
MB Booster Frame Boxes
Here are all three boxes lined up. I LOVE the way MEGA made the one side of them make a larger graphic. EXCELLENT design there!
MB Booster Frame 3-sets
Here are all three sets completed. Now ready for disassembly to then start building the Booster Frame. Don’t they look great together?!
MB Booster Frame sorted
All three set pieces sorted out.
MB Booster Frame steps
The first few steps shown here. At the point it kind of reminds me of an X-Wing, without the wings…
MB Booster Frame steps 2
The next steps of the Booster Frame. Note the inset graphic. It shows the placement of some strategic “pins” to keep the wings in an upward slanting position while horizontal. A great design solution!
MB Booster Frame base
The base for the booster frame.
MB Booster Frame extra pieces
Curiously these two pieces were NOT included in the instructions. However, I came up with the perfect solution for using them. You’ll see that in just a second.
MB Booster Frame completed
Various views showing the completed set, sans the minifig. This really is a nice design, if a bit small by comparison to the ship in the Halo Legends cartoon.
MB Booster Frame FIN
And finally, here you see the minifig piloting the Booster Frame. Note the insert shows that I clipped on those two pieces to the red foot pegs. Then I was able to attach the minifig EASILY into place. Before attaching those pieces, the minifig had a tendency to flop around or fall off the ship. So I highly suggest using my fix for this.

Summary: As a set made from three individual sets, I like what was designed. It’s a little small to scale, when compared to the cartoon version. Still, that’s not a detractor at all for me. I’m just happy to have this ship. I honestly never thought we’d get it as it IS an obscure vehicle. But then…I should know better by now. MEGA are GREAT for giving us ships of all sorts from Halo!

Overall Rating: I give this set 9 out for 10 medals. It’s worth it to have a sleek looking small obscure ship form Halo. Having the set be a little bigger and include a Watcher to make up for what I think is a slight disadvantage in the Forerunner set, and this would have earned a perfect 10 with me.

Just one thing to point out that others have commented to me prior to this review. Some have complained about piece count and price. The cost of the three sets brings this to $30 before tax. You get a ship that has 162 pieces. That puts it at around the $16-17 range. Now consider you have three minifigs and count one weapon each for them. Each of those minifigs would be $3.50 sld seperately. So that’s another $10.50 toward the total. After all of this you still have 5 other weapons from the three sets to account for. This in my opinion makes the whole of the three sets WORTH the $30 you pay for them.
Some folks tend to think narrowly here and only want to say the Booster Frame costs $30. Not so, you also get the minifigs and weapons as I said, which easily make up the difference. And that excellent packaging, especially with the one side making a larger graphic… WIN!

That all said, I HIGHLY recommend this.

I need to once again thank my wife for getting me this. Another early Birthday present. As I’ve been saying, she’s the best!

Pro Player admits to CHEATING in the Halo 4 Global Championship.

[WARNING] Some colorful language is in the article. If you are offended by cussing, you may not want to read this article.

I was going to keep quiet on this and just post the graphics below, but you know what? The hell with that. This is MY blog. I’ll say what the hell I want. Freedom of speech! I do want to thank a certain podcasting friend for passing the links to this to me. Who that is, I’ll let you guess, as I have SEVERAL podcasting friends…So don’t assume you know which one sent the links to me.

I want to see what 343/Virgin gaming does from this. I give you the twitter feed of one “Giggle Monster” AKA, Connor White.  Here he is admitting to cheating in the Halo 4 Global Championship: (click pics to make BIGGER)

Pro-player CHEAT
Here is his twitter feed as he tries to deal with the aftermath:
Pro-player CHEAT 3

Folks, this is PRECISELY the type of BULL SHIT I was eluding to in my previous article back on August 4. https://halofanforlife.com/?p=9502

Here specifically is one paragraph from that article I want to bring up again:
Beyond these rules, here are some other things I would have had in place: Players who qualified from events, RTX for example are NOT permitted to play in the online portion or later events. Why? Because for instance there is a certain competitor who qualified at RTX and who IS playing in the online competition. WHY? REALLY? SO you want to wreck people’s hopes BEFORE they even get to Seattle? Totally NOT fair gameplay at all.

Now, while I mention previous events, and this guy qualified in week two of the online portion, my point is still valid. If you have already qualified, you should be required NOT to play in any further portion of the qualifying online contest or real life events.

In the article I linked to, I specifically stated my disgust with people using alternate accounts. And that is exactly what this douchebag did. And yes, feel free to tell him I said this. It’s a DICK MOVE! Regardless that he came clean about cheating, even if he already qualified, he admitted to playing THIS week to “knock out players who have a chance.” I don’t often cuss on my blog, because I try to keep it family friendly, but you know what, FUCK YOU Connor White. You’re the very type of piece of shit pro-player I’ve been disgusted with for SO long and whom I blame for fucking up Halo’s popularity.

Did you all also notice that in the header of his twitter feed that he’s the Co-Owner of AGL? WTF? REALLY dude? So AGL promots cheating then? Or unfair sportsmanship? Honest to gawd, AGL needs to be straight up BANNED from using Halo for tournaments. Or they need remove White from any ownership of AGL. If the CO-OWNER can do this, then what? He essentially is saying it’s okay to cheat? Yes, he came clean, so what! He shouldn’t have done it in the first place!

This makes 343 look like complete ASSES for promoting AGL. Further it makes then even MORE asses for inviting those AGLers who won certain tournaments in AGL.

Come on 343, do the RIGHT thing here. Bring that big ass fucking BAN-HAMMER down on this league and Connor White. If you don’t you are going to lose even more respect that you are trying to gain back. At the least rescind those invitations to AGLers.

Harsh? HELL YEAH! This joker made a mockery of the whole tournament. You know what Connor, I don’t give a flying fuck if “everyone else is doing it.” It doesn’t mean it’s right for YOU to do it. Being the co-owner of AGL you ARE held to a HIGER standard, whether you like it or not. Otherwise your whole business and league is a FARCE and should be called into question.

Really dude, your actions could bring a lawsuit against you and your business. Hell, it might even shut down the tournament. And once all the cheaters have been routed out, they can get sued as well…Hmm, maybe this is a good thing then…

No, I’m not going to bring a suit against anyone. But damn, this is vindication for me and MANY other gamers who think pro-players are “AAA” Assholes and Attitudes!

343, NOW can you see why pro-players should NOT be allowed? I’m not going to say this kind of shit wouldn’t happen without them, but their competitiveness is MUCH higher than others to the point of doing this kind of crap. Stricter rules for a tournament SHOULD have been in place.

Gawd damn, give me the opportunity to create a tourney and you’ll see the kinds of restrictions that should have been, especially with $500K on the line and the first place prize being $200K.

You know, I STILL don’t know who won the Spartan Ops tourney from back in JANUARY!

This is why I just HATE pro-gaming. TOO MUCH MONEY on the line for what? VIDEO GAMES? For fucks sake! REALLY? At least it took 75 years in the NFL before we had to put up with the kind of assholes that professional video gaming has cranked out from near day-one!

Did you folks look/read those graphics above? Notice the last post in the one where he retweeted Gh057ayame? It was the “Restore your faith in Halo.” thread on teambeyond…A bit ironic there huh? How the frack can we restore our faith in Halo, when dudes like this (who should KNOW better) do this?

Folks, I want to make a comparison here. Pete Rose. Some of you may be old enough to remember him. He was a STELLAR pro baseball player. He did NOT use drugs nor cheat to be a great ball player. He was inducted into the hall of fame. Then…it was found out that he was placing bets on baseball games. None for the team he was playing/coaching for at the time. And you know what? His ass was thrown out of the hall of fame. He did NOT cheat, he just was very tacky, betting on other teams in the same league he played/coached in.

This guy Connor White? He did MUCH WORSE than Pete Rose, IMO. He needs to step down from AGL and give up his rights to ALL parts of the business. It’s the ONLY way he can save AGL from a HUGE disgrace. Take it upon himself ONLY, so it won’t reflect poorly on AGL. Otherwise, 343 definitely has the right to (AND SHOULD) ban them from using Halo in competitions. AND, he needs to be immediately disqualified from the tournament altogether, regardless that he supposedly got there legitimately in week two. The issue there is that 343 would be compelled to then have to review ALL of the thousands of games in the tourney. Why? Because if they ban White, then they have to be fair and ban EVERYONE else who did the same thing.

Okay…I need to stop here or I will start really rambling…

What do you folks think of this VERY HOT piece of news?

Toy Review: Mega Bloks Forerunner Terminal

Mega Bloks Forerunner Terminal: Set #97170

Technical Specifications:
Build Time: 3 minutes
Set Piece Count: 69
Minifig: “Alpha” Crawler
Weapons: Scattershot, Suppressor
Accessories: N/A
Price: $10

And on with the pics!
MB Forerunner Terminal box
Still lovin’ that new clean white box look!
MB Forerunner Terminal contents
Here are the contents. As you can see, the directions (second from left) are used for part of the graphics for the box. The white “tray” holds it in place. The actual piece bag is small and only takes up roughly 25% of the inside of the box. So why is the box so tall then? Simple enough to answer.
In order to not only show the third set of three, the box had to be taller to show off the combination set of all three into the Booster Frame set.
MB Forerunner Terminal sorted
The pieces are sorted out. It’s important to note the not including the minifig, there are actually 63 pieces. This confirms again from both the C&C console and Hangar Deck reviews that MEGA does indeed count the minifig as 6 pieces.
MB Forerunner Terminal building steps
A couple steps in the build process of this set.
MB Forerunner Terminal finished
Of the three, I’d say this is second of them, but is close to first. Believe it or not, it’s that translucent orange baseplate that does it for me. But then, many of you readers know I LOVE see-through toys, so this should come as no surprise.
I do like that this looks like a Forerunner terminal. So by comparison, this set of the three is the most believable and accurate to the game.
MB Forerunner Terminal weapons
Only two weapons included in this set. I do find that odd. Considering the minifig is a crawler which has less articulation as well. By this regard, I think we were just a smidge short changed here. Then again, this set does have the most pieces of the three. So it just about balances out. Still, I’d like to have seen another weapon at least.
MB Forerunner Terminal minifig
I very happy that MEGA didn’t ignore the other version of the crawler and gave us the Alpha. I quite like the light spikes coming out of it’s back. Hmm, I wonder if we’ll get a Cralwler Sniper down the line? Be nice to have, especially if MEGA includes the red translucent circle at the front of the head. That is the key piece that denotes it’s a sniper.
MB Forerunner Terminal alt buildAs with the other two sets in the Booster Frame series, I removed the set pieces to display them flat. This is EASILY done with this set. Anyone out there NOT want their translucent orange baseplates? If that’s the case, contact me, I WANT MORE of them! sal@halofanforlife.com

Summary: This is the third of the three Booster Frame sets. It’s the most game accurate of the three sets. A little short on the weapons and the minifig has less articulation than the other minifigs in this series. Quick build time.

Overall Rating: I give this set 8.5 out for 10 medals. Add another weapons to this and it gets a .5 higher rating. Add a Watcher to this and you get a perfect 10 rating. I just feel that the crawlers are not as good as the bi-pedals minifigs. Not because of sculpt, that’s GREAT. But because of articulation. I understand that would be near impossible at this size. So give us a Watcher also.
That said, I still recommend getting this set. Who knows, we may not see the Alpha Crawler again… So get it while it lasts!

I need to once again thank my wife for getting me this. Another early Birthday present. As I’ve been saying, she’s the best!

Miscellaneous Halo art…

I was up early with a massive headache this morning (still have it as of this writing). So I thought, what should I do while trying to get past this pain?

Look for Halo art!

Here is a selection of some art I found while perusing Pinterest. (You can find the credits to the artists there. BTW, did you know that HFFL has it’s on Pinterest page? Here’s the link! I keep adding to this, so check back once in awhile. In the meantime, enjoy these few pieces of art (click each to see full image):

“Sit Down, Shut Up, and Save Halo” a competitive gamer’s thoughts.

“menotyou135”, over on Beyond Entertainment wrote up this lengthy yet poignant article on
When I first started reading this article, I rolled my eyes a couple of times thinking it was going to be another rant by a competitive player who would whine about not having the competitive settings they wanted in the game. By mid-point that started to change, and by the end, I was cheering him on.
Here it is in it’s entirety. Any comments I have will be in light blue, along the way.
Some of the language in his article is not what I normally allow on my blog. However, given the emotion he seemed to have when writing the article and his coming around toward the end of it, I’m reposting the article in full, unedited. Readers beware….

Let me tell you a little story. When I was a kid, my mother would take me down to a place called the Movie Gallery. She would take me there and drop me off. In the Movie Gallery there was a little setup of 4 TVs next to each other. You paid a few bucks and you could play all day. You could play any game, but there was only ever one game running. Halo Combat evolved. I was around 10 years old and the big kids constantly whooped my ass, but I had fun. I counted off the days until Halo 2 would come out. I was so excited. I spent the next few years coming in and playing a mix of Halo 1 and Halo 2 every week. Sometimes more. My family couldn’t afford Xbox live, so that was how I learned Halo.

Every few months, someone would hook up a screen and show the MLG event all weekend. When other kids were looking up to LeBron James, I was watching Ghandi Rip off faces. Watching team 3D constantly avoid losing their winning streak. My mother obviously didn’t let me spend all weekend there, but I almost always caught the finals.

Then Halo 3 came out. Everybody was stoked and the little game corner was constantly packed. The owners added in two more TV and people brought their own so that we could play 4v4s. It didn’t feel the same though. Something was different. Often we went back and played Halo 2 simply because it was funner to us, but we still watched MLG. They still had the screen on every tourney.

HFFL: While I’ve played every Halo game, I didn’t get into the multiplayer aspect until Halo 3, so I can’t speak to how Halo 2’s multiplayer was. I can say that I immensely enjoyed Halo 3. Considering it’s long time success on XBOX 360, I can’t see how anything it had was bad. It had some amazing population numbers years after launch.

Eventually, the money ran dry, or people were stealing shit, or something because they shut down the Lan part, and I stopped playing halo for a while. Not completely. I would go over to a friend’s house and splitscreen matchmaking with him. I eventually got live in 2009, and I didn’t put the controller down. By this time, I knew that Halo 2 was better than Halo 3, but it was still able to hold my interest. I got an account on the MLG forums and started to bitch like everybody else. We missed the feel of Halo 2. We wanted that back. We wanted Halo to be both awesome and skillful. Halo 3 was awesome, but it lacked what Halo 2 and Halo 1 had.

Most of you know the rest of the story. We saw Reach rising over the horizon. We all were so excited. We saw the lead designer of Shadowrun was working on it. We saw all these interesting, though different things and we took a lot of it with a grain of salt. We figured the gimmicks could be removed if necessary and it was all good… until we found out that it wasn’t all good.

HFFL: Hmm, now here is where I diverge greatly from pro-players. I happened to LIKE Reach. Never mind that chronologically it happened before Halo CE. People often try to give me crap about that, and why did the Spartans in that game have features like jet pack, when Master Chief didn’t. Spartan IIIs vs Spartan IIs. Spartan IIIs needed to make up for what they lacked by comparison to Spartan IIs, nuff said. Personally, I liked sprint being added into games. Why shouldn’t super soldiers be able to sprint? I LOVE Jet pack. Again, why shouldn’t these super soldiers have a jet pack. Armor lock though…ugh

When Bungie released that game Halo got diagnosed with Cancer. We denied it a little at first, but we all eventually came to accept it. We tried to make it work. We tried to doctor it up. Create great forge maps. Blah blah blah… Then we got a miracle. 343i, the new Halo company gave us a title update. We got an answer to a lot of our problems and for a time at least, Halo’s Cancer seemed in Remission. We got some great classic maps from the Anniversary map pack, though many of us were highly upset that we didn’t actually get multiplayer in Anniversary. Still, it looked better than before.

HFFL: And HERE is one big reason why I’ve come to “not appreciate” the pro-player community. Believe me, “not appreciate” is me being VERY reserved from what I want to say here… I blame pro-players heavily for their bad attitudes towards Reach and it’s competitive settings for killing the popularity this game should have enjoyed. To quote my grandmother on an old clichéd line, “If you have something bad to say, better to say nothing at all.” That’s how I feel these pro-players should have taken this. Instead many trashed and thrashed Reach. It will take a lot for me to forgive those certain pro-players of their divisive attitudes towards Reach, then later Halo 4.

We saw Halo 4 on the horizon. This company that had given us this awesome map pack and the title update was going to get a shot at making a full Halo game. We saw this as a sign that Halo was going to come back. That MLG would pick it back up. We hoped that this game had the potential to bring Halo back. We united. We were all on the same page… or at least as close as you can get with a bunch of competitive personalities all packed together.

Then we got some news. We saw little things that worried us, and some big things that worried us, but we ignored most of it at first. However, it didn’t take long for us to realize that the Cancer was back. We saw it coming. However we still watched MLG’s pre-release tournament. We still went out and bought the game. We tried it for ourselves and had a short honeymoon phase. But that didn’t last long. After only a short while, our safteynet dropped us. The company that had gotten where it is today because of our game. They weren’t clear at first, but eventually it happened and we were forced to do something for ourselves.

HFFL: Wow, so Halo is supposed to revolve around MLG? Honest to gawd, this is probably the biggest reason I hate MLG. You did NOT make the game. You didn’t toil countless hours, some into the wee hours of the morning, missing out on your family time, to develop a “AAA” game. WHo the hell are you to say what the game settings should be? Change them for your “sport” but do NOT complain about the game. You only further serve to ruin a golden franchise and split the community even more.

During this time, that 10 year old boy died. The one who grew up wanting to be like the pros. The one who watched every MLG even since 2005 (or tried). I gave up and I grew bitter. I looked at people like Frankie and Kevin Franklin and thought to myself “Who are they to do this to MY game? Who are they do do this to MY community? To MY friends?” I hated them. I grew bitter and sour. I attacked anybody who supported their “creation.” I turned blame at anybody who I could, and I watched my imaginary green internet points skyrocket, because other people felt the same. Other people were just as angry as me.

Even so, I stuck with it. I stuck through them releasing more BTB maps when only 4 of the default maps were even close to reasonably sized. I stuck through them hiring Bravo, and Quin. A small part of that 10 year old boy still lingered inside of me hoping that something would change.

HFFL: I can sympathize somewhat here. Though he does have an air of “entitlement” here. I actually get that. I’m a long time Star Wars fan and when The Phantom Menace came out, I wasn’t a big fan of it as I felt it changed what Star Wars was for me. However, I quickly grew out of that, seeing the potential for more movies and the prequels were catering to a new younger audience. I got that. Halo is similar in some ways. For myself, I was in my very early 30s when Halo came out, so I’ve got a bit of a difference of age perspective here. However, using Star Wars as my point of reference, I can easily see the correlation here.

At the same time, all of the other bitter and angry people started fighting. Started turning against each other. The “Hope” that we had, the “Unity” that we had was crumbling. We were all stranded on an island, and do you know what we did? We drew lines in the sand so that those “other guys” wouldn’t come near us. We blamed people who were on our side. We attacked those who were trying to get the same thing that we were. We poisoned ourselves and it made me sick.

HFFL: It’s funny in a sad way to read that pro-players couldn’t even get along with each other here. See guys, you were ruining your own part (and I do mean PART) of the community here, not to mention affect the greater community that you are but a PART of…

I gave up. I swam away from the island. Waved goodbye to all the friendly faces, and I was never going to come back. I even decided to finalize it by purposefully banning myself from the island. I wanted nothing to do with it.

But that 10 year old inside of me was not dead. I kept up with some of what was going on. Some of the patch notes that were coming out. Some of what the modding community was doing. The ranking system coming out. My 10 year old self wanted me to go back, but my rational self didn’t want to. I was still bitter. I felt like all this was great and all, but it felt like it was too little, too late. That nothing is going to revive Halo.

But my stupid little 10 year old self wouldn’t shut up. He told me that Halo is not dead. Halo is on life support. That it is being held up by people who are far stronger willed, and far more stubborn that I was. It was being held up by the help of the same people I had despised, and insulted, and ridiculed. The same people who I thought I had the right to jab at, just because I had a bunch of imaginary green internet points. I am pathetic. I have no right to call myself a member of this community, when I was so quick to leave when things weren’t looking great. The very same people I thought poorly off were the people who actually had the balls to stay. And not only did they stay, but they did more for this game, than I ever did.

HFFL: So finally, it looks like the writer is seeing the light somewhat. Still a heavy scant to pro-gaming, but he’s coming around.

And then I started typing this message. I wont and say that it is easy for me. Even while I type this very line, I have a tear running down my right cheek. Over a fucking video game. I am pathetic. I don’t deserve any of the stupid internet points people have given me. I am not some great member of this community like I wanted to think I was. I am just a guy. Typing at a computer. Crying about a fucking video game.

The question is: Why bother? Why am I typing this? To be honest, I am not entirely sure. I wish I could make an excuse and say that I am drunk, but I am not. Something that might make it less humiliating when I finally hit send, even though I do not want to. Maybe this is my punishment to myself. For giving up on something that has been a part of me for so long and being such a fucking dick to those I disagreed with.

So what do I want? I don’t want your stupid fucking green internet points. I would prefer the Red ones. They are the ones I deserve, even if they are imaginary. I don’t want pity either.

This is what I want. I want all of you reading this right now who care about Halo to ask yourself something. Who have you been in this community. Think real fucking hard about that for a second. Have you been one of those people who has shoveled through shit to make this game and community better, or are you the shit.

HFFL: I bolded that article because it’s one point that I think EVERY Halo fan needs to read, reread, and contemplate. I hope for my part, that I’ve been a shoveler, and not what is being shoveled…

I will tell you one person you should be like. He is a person that I despised. That I verbally ridiculed on numerous occasions. A person that I laughed at in skype chats and pissed on every chance I got. I got a lot of imaginary green internet points for it too. It felt great at the time. It really made me feel like I was fucking somebody. His name is Eric Hewitt or if you would prefer GH057ayame. This mother fucker has done more for this series than just about anybody who has ever played the game. There are maybe 10 people I can think of that can compete. I hated a lot of things he chose to support during testing. Sometimes, I decided I didn’t like something BECAUSE he chose it.

He didn’t care though. He barely acknowleged me. I was just one annoying fly. He did not let himself breakdown despite me, and the majority of my friends constantly bashing what he did. He pushed forward and he fucking made something happen. Mix that with 343i’s improvements, many of which you can directly thank the person in question for, and Halo has finally come to a point of stabilization. The peak numbers are pretty much the same as they have been and stream numbers have been steadily rising.

HFFL: It was really nice to read that someone could eat crow on their words and actually give praise for a fellow fan.

Look at what we have to be grateful for:

-We got a 4sk BR and it even is able to miss a bullet to be 4sk, making it more consistent
-Bravo is working for 343i
-They gave us a map pack with skyline and monolith
-They have a map pack with pit and vertigo coming
-They added in a ranking system (even if it is cruddy)
-They fixed OS
-They increased the skill required to use the DMR
-They stated that they won’t ban us for playing modded gametypes
-They gave us team doubles
-They gave us team snipers

Now you can point out that all of those things, and more should have been that way when the game released. I agree one hundred percent, and if I were in your shoes, this stupid list wouldn’t change my mind about anything. I would even try to break it down and tell me how I am wrong if I so had the fancy, and I would use my arguing skills to win, because that is what I do here. I debate. I always have. It is what I am known for.

But that isn’t the point. I know there are fallacies in my arguments. There always are because on some level, I am always wrong. So are every one of you here, because we are discussing theoretical concepts of how enjoyable a video game is. Do you see how immaterial that is? How pathetic that is? If we weren’t all on the same page, we would use that argument daily as a cop out if we were losing any debate, and we would not be wrong to do so.

But this is more than a video game to us. We want it a certain way. We want it to be skillful. We want it to promote teamwork. Blah blah blah you know the drill by now. I didn’t see how pathetic and stupid it all was until I took a step back and watched the lines in the sand grow deeper and deeper from a safe distance.

But even with all of that said, is still important. We are so busy looking at everything that has gone wrong, that many of us are having problems realizing what is right.

HFFL: And finally, the writer wins me over. It took him nearly the whole article, but now I read where he seems to get the bigger picture. I’m still not entirely sure that he feels this way, but I think he finally sees that Halo is MUCH bigger than just the pro-player/competitive community. Halo is a gaming franchise and thusly SHOULD cater to ALL fans, not just competitive. There is room for ALL types of fans within Halo.

Halo 5 is looking to be better than Halo 4. We have an in man. Things have been looking up.

I agree that I have a seriously hard time believing that Halo 5 will fix it all. That is because it wont. The damage is done and moping about it won’t do a fucking thing. We all want to raise our voices so that 343i fixes what they broke.

I… get… it….

The part that most of you seem to not understand, and even if you do, you don’t acknowledge it, is that our island is only one of many, and that we aren’t all yelling for help together, that we aren’t going anywhere.

HFFL: HERE is where he finally acknowledges something I wish more pro-players would understand. You are only PART of a greater community. The respect you expect, the attention you crave, the settings you desire are only going to be achieved by being a cohesive part of the greater community for which you are a part of. STOP the needless divisiveness and get on board with the WHOLE community. While we all are never going to be on the same page, we should at least be in the same chapter…

I am not telling you to agree with everything that the other side says. I am not telling you that what you feel strongly about is not important. I am not even telling you to trust the person who this wall of text is telling you to respect. I am telling you to listen. Do you get that? Open your ears and hear what the other people have to say. Think about why they are saying it. We are all people. We all have brains and we all do things for logical reasons no matter how hard that may seem to believe. It is so easy to write someone off as stupid or not well known, and when you do that, you are wrong.

Most importantly, we all want Halo to succeed. We are a community.

HFFL: The above highlighted in light green is one thing I definitely want everyone to take from this article. Regardless if you are the head of a BIG Halo forum, a single gamer, a podcaster, a blogger, etc., we need to respect each other’s opinion’s, even if we dont’ agree with them. We should all understand that passion for Halo comes from all over and that just because someone isn’t known as well, does not mean their opinions are any less valid. That is something I face VERY often in the Halo community and it’s sickening. It’s one reason why I try to give voice to those individual gamers here. It’s why I seek out new and upcoming faces in Halo. It’s why I interview fans who may have a unique perspective on Halo but aren’t well known. It’s why I choose to promote fellow small blogs like myself. If the community is going to grow and be more effective, all of our voices need to be heard and not the relative few large sites or “famous” pro-players.

I spent a lot of time on MLG Forge Forum in Halo 3. There was a great guy there named Fritzter. You may know him as the maker of Amplified.

When we had stupid forge drama going on and everybody was arguing, he always repeated one thing.

“Sit down. Shut up. And forge.”

So in honor of him, I have this to say:

“Sit down. Shut up. And save Halo.”

HFFL: That last line in the article sums it all up very well.

Restore your Faith in Halo – a competitive player’s thoughts.

GH057ayame wrote up the following article on Beyond Entertainment’s forums to show what 343 has done since launch to improve Halo 4. It’s heavily skewed towards competitive players. The article does have many good points. On we go…

If someone asked me, “Ghost, what’s the most common question that you get asked in regards to Halo?” I’d simply respond with, “Why should I still believe in Halo?”

After many months of hard work by 343 Industries, I felt that it was time to answer that question in its entirety… That it was time to finally summarize, recognize, and appreciate the definitive actions that they’ve taken as a whole in order to restore my faith in Halo. -Ghost

HFFL: As I said, Ghost’s article is heavy on pro-player/competitive aspects, but there are several points within that are good for any Halo fan. The biggest thing we can take from this list is that 343 is trying to make up ground that was lost at release date.
The hopes for many a Halo fan, myself included are that these types of updates happen to the next Halo game, BEFORE launch, so that it’s a more complete ready-to-go out of the box game.
