And now the PROOF! (Follow up to XBOX mag reveal of new Halo game) Play a MEGA Chief…

Sidebar-HFFLwm
Well there it is in text, printed in the XBOX mag…”Become one with a Promethean and turn into Mega Chief. Now what exactly does this mean? Chief can’t be “composed” then inserted into a Promethean shell as he became immune to the Composer via the Librarian in Halo 4.The Great Green Hope-HFFLwm
What’s this in the little green box…Spartan Ops will no doubt return?Full Page-HFFLwm
Here’s that full page so you can see it all at once.
Two-page spread-HFFLwmOn the left of this two-page spread is info on Spartan Assault. The writer talks about “how much like a true Halo experience Spartan Assault actually is.” They also lament the decision for it to only be available on Win8 Devices (I agree).
To the right is an article with 343’s executive producer, Dan Ayoub, specifically regarding Spartan Assault. There Dan talks of quickly learning that the game was going to live or die by the controls. They went through many control scheme until they got the “adaptive glide” scheme for which the game uses.

Now the second question in this article asks what he thinks the fanbase will think about it only being available on Win8 devices. Dan quickly sidesteps that question by saying “The real goal of it was really just to create…” They wanted people to be able to play a Halo game not having to sit in front of a tv. With all due respect Dan, many of we devoted fans feel this was a HUGE mistake. Brining it to XBLA in the near future will fix that mistake. We’re not going to be convinced to buy a several hundred dollar surface or win8 phone for a $7 app. The upgrade to Win8 for PC is about $50 from what I understand. So again, is that worth it for a $7 app? Bring it to XBLA for $15 and you’ll see sales of the app VAULT!
The third question covers what we already know of the story line meshing with what’s already out there. It still bugs me that there are going to be things in Spartan Assault that unlock stuff in Halo 4… I have NO family or friends that use Window 8, so this is going to prove very difficult for me to accomplish.
With regards to the fourth question being about the game being solo only and will there be multiplayer, once again Dan deflects the question deftly by saying, “We’ve got some really cool things planned down the lines for it. So people should definitely stick around for that.” With respect again Dan, how about just answering the question directly. Honestly, with a mobile game I wouldn’t expect it to be multiplayer. At least not in the traditional sense that we’ve come to know from Halo.

Latest XBOX 360 mag says you can play as a “Promethean Mega Chief”???

Blog subscriber. Thomas Bradford, points out that in the new XBOX 360 magazine there is some VERY interesting information regarding “Halo 5.” I can’t confirm this, ATM, so take with a grain of salt.

Hey HFFL, Just finished reading the latest edition of the Xbox 360 magazine and in the halo Xbox One section of the magazine the people at Xbox 360 magazine played a bit of halo 5 and said the game looks incredible but game-play isn’t good at the moment. They also said that chief is fighting hurdles of Promethean’s and said that the massive forerunner in the trailer is also a Promethean. They also confirmed that spartan ops is not continuing in halo games and then they gave something away saying ‘ become one with a Promethean and turn into mega chief”. They briefly described Halo Xbox One as the master chief returns to battle the Promethean’s in the Xbox one’s first ever Halo game. They also talked about destiny and all other Xbox One launch titles and planned games.

If this is all true then we’re fighting Prometheans again.Spartan Ops not coming back…sigh. My worst fear for it confirmed, possibly.

The one line he says about “become one with a Promethean and turn into Mega Chief” is very VERY interesting and odd at the same time. I wonder what that could mean.

If anyone out there can confirm this is in the mag, PLEASE send my pics/scans so I can post as proof.

Halo 5 – 3 Reasons Cortana May not be coming back. A rebuttal for her death.

The following is an article published on gamingillustrated.com. Along the way, I’ll include my comments in light blue to separate them from the article.

Cortana

Article by Alexandra Mangen

Cortana, faithful AI companion to Spartan 117 A.K.A. Master Chief, has sparked a lively debate amongst Halo fans in the months since Halo 4′s release. Will she be coming back or won’t she? It seems that Cortana, scantily-clad and full of sass, managed to charm her artificial way into the hearts of gamers everywhere. Now that she’s gone, the five stages of grief are nowhere more apparent than on a Cortana thread of a Halo fan forum.

Denial, Cortana can’t be dead She’s a critical part of the Halo storyline. Master Chief is going to find a way to bring her back. Anger, 343 Studios made a big mistake killing off Cortana. No one is going to want to play future Halo titles without her. Bargaining, Cortana can make fragments of herself, there has to be one hidden around somewhere and if there isn’t, there has to be a way to make another Cortana. Depression, the game won’t be the same without Cortana. Who could ever replace her? Acceptance, it was fun while it lasted. Maybe the developer could give Master Chief a younger, hotter sidekick? While many fans still mourn Cortana’s loss, others are beginning to contemplate a Halo future without Cortana and for 3 good reasons…

Reason One

Artistic Integrity has become a hot topic since the ending of Mass Effect 3. Many fans of the Mass Effect franchise felt slighted by it’s less than happy ending. Though BioWare was receptive to the fan campaign to get the ending changed going so far as to release DLC which modified and extended the multiple ending options, they stuck to their guns. The argument made by BioWare for Artistic Integrity poses an interesting question, can video games be considered art?

Merriam Webster defines art as “the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects; also : works so produced”. This can certainly be applied to video games as the gaming industry thrives on technological skill and creativity. If the goal of art is to make the viewer or reader feel something, good or bad, then the anger of fans post-Mass Effect would indicate that video games are steadily forging a place in the art world.

The death of Cortana at the end of Halo 4 did more than elicit an emotional reaction in fans, it performed an essential artistic function, it inspired conversation and more than that, caused fans to ask questions. Her loss caused the player to question the mortality and humanity of Master Chief. Viewing Master Chief’s grief at Cortana’s loss firsthand reminds the gamer that despite all his skills and training, he is not infallible and he will not always save the day. Creating a convoluted storyline about the Master Chief rescuing Cortana or a duplicate of Cortana being found would devalue Cortana’s death and negate all that it accomplished. Gamers would again be lulled into a false sense of security and forget that Master Chief is more than an elite killing machine.

HFFL: The thing is, we’ve come to know Master Chief as the culmination and perfection of what humanity has to offer. Yes, he has had loss earlier in his career. But killing off Cortana? I’m still with the group that thinks she is a VITAL part of the Halo campaign. And yes, I want to see her back, convoluted story or not. Gamers being lulled into a false sense of security? Come on, this IS NOT real life… why can’t we feel secure in our video games? And Master Chief IS an elite killing “machine.” Ms Mangen, the writer of this article uses Mass Effect to illustrate the point of Cortana’s death as ME’s ending was finite and only had additional content after fans created an uproar over it. The thing is it’s WE gamers who invested the gaming time and money to pay for these games. Yes, I understand the studio created/put in the work to bring these to us, but without our dollars this couldn’t continue. I felt wholly CHEATED by Mass Effect’s ending, wanting my Commander Shepard to ride off into the sunset with his Liara. Now while that would be more than cliché for Master Chief and Cortana, I still feel they should be together forever. So in this sense, I feel cheated. Yes, we all knew that in the Halo-verse AIs have a shelf life of about 7 years and Cortana surpassed that. But 4 years of that time was taken away from us in between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4. Also, I’m not the only one in thinking that Cortana is unique and could find a way to overcome rampancy. I STILL believe it’s possible.

Reason Two

The popularity of Spartan Ops Season 1 has shown that Halo fans have an interest in the world outside Master Chief and Cortana. With a successful series of novels a few movies and a television series in the works, Microsoft clearly has plans for the further development of the Halo franchise. Killing Cortana is a logical solution to prevent the storyline of future titles from becoming stagnant. Yes the gamer could continue killing Covenant aliens and saving the world with Cortana at their side as they’ve done in the last four Halo titles but how will we ever come to know Master Chief better unless we see how he interacts with other characters besides those currently in his UNSC comfort zone?

Cortana’s death leaves room for the introduction of new characters who through their interaction with Master Chief will give players a clearer picture of the man behind the Mjolnir. There are many characters auxiliary to the conflict between the Covenant, the Forerunners and the humans including other AI. Other alien races too have the technological capabilites of UNSC AI like the Huragok/Engineers, lovable methane filled balloon creatures we have yet to see in a Halo game. Yes we could keep the same old but wouldn’t new characters and missions related to those characters be more interesting and provide more room for plot development and character growth?

HFFL: Killing Cortana prevents the story from being stagnant? No, I dare say not. Look at any number of sidekicks in pop culture. Many have been there since the hero’s beginning and continue to be and are NOT stagnant. Do we REALLY need to KNOW Master Chief? His early career has been well documented in Halo Novels, comics and graphic novels. We know his plight. We do not need story to create his humanity. WE the gamers are Chief’s humanity. This is something I think 343 missed the mark on. We know Chief is human. We do not need to have him further humanized. I prefer my Master Chief as the elite killing super soldier we all came to know.

There is PLENTY of room for new characters while still having Cortana alive. In fact, reintroducing Chief to his fellow Spartan IIs that are still alive is one option that many fans would like to see. Cortana being alive would not in any way hinder that. We can still have new characters introduced with missions pertaining to them giving way to plot development and character growth, without the need to kill Cortana.

Reason Three

Bringing Cortana back without a cliched or complicated storyline poses some difficult problems. Creating a new Cortana would require the UNSC to reacquire Dr. Halsey. ONI issued the order to have Halsey executed in Spartan Ops Season 1 making her understandably reluctant to help the UNSC. Even if the UNSC chose to make another clone of Halsey’s brain, as Cortana points out to the Master Chief in Halo 4, a new AI might act and talk like Cortana but it wouldn’t be Cortana. Could Master Chief find a Cortana fragment somewhere? Fragments created by smart AI are left behind to perform specific tasks and are reintegrated by the AI once those tasks are completed. While the fragments may retain the general personality of the core AI, they are nowhere near as capable or intelligent as the core AI. Would fans really want to have Cortana back if she was only a hollow shell of her former self?

Ultimately, Cortana provided an emotional foil to Master Chief’s stoicism and it is probable we have not seen the last of Cortana. Future titles may choose to explore events prior to Cortana’s death but her death also provides fans with an opportunity to become more connected with Master Chief. While John-117 may never become the comrade in arms that other FPS games set their protagonists up to be, he has the potential to become more than the stalwart savior of humanity, he has the potential to become legend and it seems like 343 Studios understands that too.

HFFL: Difficult problems bringing Cortana back? No indeed. She said, “Most of me is down there.” This could mean any number of things. Down on Earth? It could be VERY possible she downloaded her remaining non-rampant parts to ONI servers, thereby saving herself until she could be reconfigured/realign/added to a new AI core that is devoid of personality, so that Cortana could take that over. There, done, NOT complicated…

As for another Cortana, especially that of one from Halsey, this could be a VERY interesting story. Halsey, while in Jul M’Dama’s “care” could create a new Cortana to help her achieve her goals. This Cortana could eventually come to “fight” the old Cortana, with the old one winning and integrating herself to this new one, taking over and becoming whole again. There, BAM, cleaned up story. This ISN’T HARD FOLKS!

As far as Cortana’s death allowing we gamers to be more connected with Master Chief?? Bunk! As I said earlier, WE are Master Chief. Regardless that there has been numerous stories written of his early life and we know his name, it is WE the gamer who PLAY as Master Chief. It is WE who take on the Covenant, Flood, Prometheans and win.

While I appreciate this article, I feel the author is out of touch with Halo itself. John-117 IS the savior of humanity in the Halo-verse, he already IS legend. The write makes it seem like he isn’t either of those and his (OUR) previous accomplishments in the past Halo games have amounted to little or nothing, especially having Cortana at our side.

I love that 343 has continued the Halo franchise, but killing Cortana, in my humble opinion was a MAJOR misstep. Bringing her back will appease those fans like myself who want her back, while also bothering “fans” like the author who see Cortana’s death as necessary.

Master Chief had already LOST so much. He lost his childhood, his home, his planet. He lost many of his fellow Spartan IIs. He saw many of humanity’s planets lost to the Covenant. We did not and still do not need to see any more suffering of Master Chief to realize his humanity. In his training, he became a super soldier with the capacity for killing on a near unprecedented scale. We saw his humanity during the events of the mini-series “Forward Unto Dawn.” We continue to see it in novels and other written media. Cortana’s death wasn’t necessary and in fact lessened the story for me. Seeing him on that deck looking out toward Earth, he just seemed a SHELL of his former self. Not at all human. If that is what 343 was going for, they achieved it. But now, we have a Master Chief that seems to have lost his direction. THAT IS NOT MASTER CHIEF. Master Chief and Cortana go hand in hand, or in this case chip in brain…

HFFL Exclusive Interview with Toxik Nate, RTX finalist for the Halo 4 Global Championship.

Toxik Nate was the break-out surprise at the Halo 4 Global Championship qualifier at RTX. In part due to his being a non-pro and playing so well against them.
I contacted Nate right after RTX to see if he’d be interested in doing an interview with HFFL. He agreed and here it is. If you’re not familiar with Nate, he was one of only SIX to advance to the finals of the Halo 4 Global Championship, RTX Qualifier of 696 contestants. I think we’re about to hear even more about him in the future, especially if he performs well at the Finals in Seattle during PAX.

Toxik Nate Symbol

HFFL: Hello Nate, thanks for agreeing to do this interview with me.
Toxik Nate (Nate): No problem Sal, just call me Nate.

HFFL: You made quite a showing at the RTX Qualifier for the Halo 4 Global Championship. Did you think you’d place so high, knowing there would be several pros playing as well?
Nate: I knew that several pros were attending, There was no doubting the skill of my competitors, so I did not doubt myself.

HFFL: Tell us what it was like to play in the tournament at RTX. Could you feel the excitement in the air?
Nate: RTX Austin had a HUGE turnout this was my first time at Rooster Teeth. So much cosplay it was like every video game/movie character came out to PARTY. I had a lot of fun talking with Master Chief John 117 himself. He told me the ending of the Halo series beyond H4 and it is truly amazing. (HFFL: LOL) As I entered the open FFA I knew that this was an important time to play my game.

HFFL: Were you nervous? If so, what did you do to overcome that nervousness? Any pre-game warm-ups, rituals?
Nate: Yes, I only got nervous before the finals on main stage. As for pregame rituals I often listen to two of my favorite bands, The Deftones and TOOL, before I play and sometimes while I’m playing. During the line up for the mainstage finals I can remember the song SCHISM by TOOL was playing over the showroom speakers. Hearing that song was good for me that’s one of the songs I blast before I start gaming.

HFFL: Upon your completion of the tournament at RTX, what were you feeling when you knew you had made it through?
Nate: When the tournament was over I was feeling good and was thankful for my placing. I enjoyed post game sportsmanship as every finalist congratulated one another.

HFFL: Do you have any tips for the rest of us who will be participating in the online portion of the contest?
Nate: For the online portion players should pay close attention to the host of the game. This is the GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP so expect fans of Halo all around the world to compete. If your trying to qualify and you live in the states, getting caught on a foreign HOST makes it harder to play. Try aiming your rifle through 3000 miles of internet traffic.

HFFL: Should you win or place high in the finals at Seattle, would you consider going pro if given the opportunity?
Nate: If I place well in Seattle, I will consider playing professionally.

HFFL: What about Halo made you a fan in the first place?
Nate: Halo multiplayer is a lot of fun. Master Chief is an awesome main character.

HFFL: Which game in the Halo franchise is your favorite?
Nate: Halo 2

HFFL: What is your favorite Multiplayer game type and why?
Nate: FFA. Chaos, kill stealing, and competition.

HFFL: Favorite Map and why?
Nate: Halo 2’s Midship. PARTY AT PINK 2!

HFFL: Favorite Weapon from any of the Halo games and why?
Nate: My favorite weapon has always been the battle rifle. As you become more precise with your shots you will see its the best weapon.

HFFL: What do you think about the changes 343 have and continue to make to Halo?
Nate: 343 Industries has improved the game play of Halo 4 with the weapons tuning update. Its nice to see the developers listen to community feedback helping to bring a better player experience to Halo 4.

HFFL: Thanks, Nate, for your time and willingness to answer these questions.
Nate: Sure, no problem.

You can find Nate at his twitter account:  twitter@toxiknate

If you’re like me, you want to see Nate win. He’s the underdog to be sure. Being a non-pro, he’s got the odds stacked against him. Still, I think it would be GREAT for Halo if a non-pro won it all at the finals in Seattle. It would show that there is indeed a chance for ANYONE to win this, not just those that play Halo professionally.

Tor Books announces “Mortal Dictata” the third and final book of the Kilo-5 trilogy.

HaloMortalDictata

Tor Books and 343 announce Halo: Mortal Dictata by Karen Traviss, coming January 2014.

More info to likely follow at San Diego Comicon.

Is that girl on the cover Naomi? Hmm, mysterious. “Mortal Dictata” is already canon in the Halo universe:

The UN Colonial Mortal Dictata is a human piece of legislation or code of ethics which was in effect as of 2549. The precise contents of the Dictata are unknown, however it is known to prohibit the flash cloning (or perhaps cloning in general) of full human beings. Dr. Catherine Halsey is known to have violated the code on numerous occasions, most notably when cloning herself in order to create Cortana.

I’d like to thank Tom from Dust and Echoes podcast for giving the heads up on this.

An EXCLUSIVE Interview with April Orenski herself, Enisha Brewster.

You know her from Forward Unto Dawn, the Halo miniseries that premiered in October, 2012. She played the leader and senior cadet of Hastati squad, April Orenski. It is my pleasure to bring you a HaloFanForLife.com exclusive interview with Enisha Brewster.
(If you represent another website, please only link back to this article, do not copy/paste in whole or part. Professional courtesy, please. This is my exclusive.)

And now, on with the interview:

Enisha Brewster headshotHFFL: Hello Enisha, thanks for agreeing to do this interview with me.
Enisha Brewster (EB): My pleasure.

HFFL: According to your IMDB profile, you’ve been acting for 3-4 years now. Is that the case?
EB: I’ve been acting since I was 10, but I began my film and television career just 3 years ago.

HFFL: Is there anyone in particular that motivated you to go into acting?
EB: The first person to put a script into my hands was a sweet woman named Reba Kendrid in Houston, Texas. I was hooked from that day forward. A couple peers in college motivated me to pursue a career in acting well before I’d made that decision for myself. And a casting director in Atlanta encouraged me to consider a career in TV and film before I’d even given it a thought. I am ever grateful to each of them.

HFFL: Who in your life, famous or not, is an inspiration to you, and why?
EB: I am inspired by humanitarians like Kerry Washington, and great women like Phylicia Rashad, and great artists like Geoffrey Wright. My family inspire me every day of my life.
HFFL: Family can definitely inspire!

HFFL: You played “April Orenski” in the Forward Unto Dawn mini-series. Have you done mini-series in the past? If so, which ones? Were any sci-fi related?
EB: Forward Unto Dawn was my first mini-series and my first sci-fi project ever.

HFFL: Forward Unto Dawn was shot in Canada. Was that your first time acting in a production outside of the United States?
EB: Yes. We shot Forward Unto Dawn in Vancouver, a lovely city with even lovelier people.

HFFL: With Forward Unto Dawn being a hit, are you aware of your now lifelong association with Halo? Would you like to reprise your role as Orenski if offered that opportunity?
EB: That never ceases to excite me! I would be happy to reprise my role as April Orenski given the opportunity!

HFFL: Where/What would you like to see Orenski become?
EB: A loaded question 🙂 I have some ideas, but I’m going to defer to the creative geniuses at Microsoft on this one.
HFFL: I have some ideas as well. Admiral Orenski!

HFFL: You recently were nominated for an EMMY for your role as Orenski. How and when did you find this out and what was your reaction? (By the way, congrats and I truly hope you win!)
EB: The official nominations will be announced on July 18th, 2013. It would be a huge honor to be nominated. At this stage I have been submitted to be considered for an Emmy Nomination–which itself is a huge deal!

HFFL: Are you at all like Orenski? If so, how, and if not, what separates you from her?
EB: I think April Orenski and I both have a strong sense of duty, commitment, and responsibility to the things and people we hold in high regard, but April is far more stern and way less empathetic then I am. She is military. As much of a tomboy as I once was (and still am in some sense), I love a little beauty, a little glitz, a touch of glam every once in a while.

HFFL: Are/Were you a fan of Halo? Did you know of Halo before your work on FUD?
EB: Honestly, I wasn’t very familiar with Halo before being cast. I had to get the scoop from my brothers. I didn’t start to understand how huge an opportunity and franchise Halo is until I heard their excitement.

HFFL: Are you a Gamer? If so, have you played any of the Halo games? Before your work on FUD?
EB: No, I can’t say that I am a gamer. But I have a sneaking suspicion that will change very soon.
HFFL: Well, I hope you do get into gaming and feel free to add me as a friend on XBOX when you do. My Gamertag is: HaloFanForLife1

HFFL: Did you have any surreal moments on the set? If so, please expound upon this. For example, seeing Master Chief for the first time.
EB: Seeing MC for the first time was indeed a surreal moment! Daniel Cudmore, who embodies him in Forward Unto Dawn, is himself a tall man with a great presence. Seeing Daniel in full armor as Master Chief for the first time was like meeting a superhero. My heart started racing and my eyes must have been a mile wide.

HFFL: What projects do you have up and coming?
EB: I can be seen in the 12th and 13th episode of Perception this season, back in uniform and barking orders! The episodes air in September on TNT.

HFFL: Thanks again for your time Enisha. It continues to be my honor to talk with you. I wish you all the best in your future acting career. Should you win the EMMY, don’t forget we little folk who are pulling for you!
EB: Thank you, Sal!!

You can find news of Enisha at her official website: enishabrewster.com

Interview with Brian Reed, writer of Halo Initiation.

The following is from Halo Waypoint’s interview with Halo: Initiation writer Brian Reed regarding the origin and rise of Sarah Palmer from being an ODST to Spartan to the UNSC Infinity’s Spartan Commander:

palmerHW: How is Palmer’s role different in Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo: Initiation?

Brian Reed: This is the story of how Palmer became a Spartan. Its early days in the Spartan IV program in this story and they’re looking for the first recruits into the program. But to get recruited into the program, you’ve got to have done something pretty spectacular. This is the story of what Palmer did, what happens on her first mission as a Spartan, and how the events of that mission set in motion her eventual placement as Infinity Spartan Commander.

HW: What are some of your favorite things about writing for this character?

Brian Reed: Palmer’s a lot of fun to write because she’s half-way to a force of nature. She has a lot of “shoot first, ask questions later” in her bones, and so far in her life that has proven to be the best operating procedure. Of course the day will come that her style backfires and she realizes she needs to learn about something the rest of us call “subtlety.” Luckily for us, she’s got a Brute to fight in this comic, so that day’s not here yet.

HW: Can you talk about some of the story connections to Halo 4 fans can expect in Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo: Initiation?

Brian Reed: Palmer’s in both stories, as is Spartan Davis, another of the recruits we meet in INITIATION. Over the course of the comic we see their first meeting, and their partnership develop. Since the two of them are what stands between UNSC forces and certain doom in Spartan Assault, it’s interesting to see how they got to know one another.

h4_palmer2

HW: What kind of questions will Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo: Initiation answer about Palmer?

Brian Reed: The two big questions we aimed to answer were “How did Palmer become a Spartan?” and “What did she do that was so impressive the Spartans made her their Commander?” The answer to both of these questions involves a lot of heavy weapons fire, explosions, humor, and adventure across a dangerous and exciting galaxy. You know… Halo stuff.

halo sa 32x18 rgb lo_final

HFFL: Whoo, this sounds exciting! I’ll get the comic book for sure. Still going to be SERIOUSLY disappointed about not being able to play Spartan Assault though. So now begs the questions, what happened to Spartan Davis, Palmer’s “partner.” I’m going to make a guess that he dies. From the comments in the interview above, I gleaned this guess from the part that says “…her style backfires and she realizes she needs to learn about something the rest of us call “subtlety.”

Halo: Oversized Collection [Hardcover]

So while reading e-mail this morning, I got a notification from Amazon about this book.

Halo Oversized Collection

This is essentially a graphic novel that is a compilation of three earlier Halo comic book titles: Uprising 1-4, Blood Line 1-5, Helljumper 1-5

I enjoyed all three of these titles. If you’ve never read them, then I highly suggest getting this book. It’s not due out until October 15 this year. So of course you can hunt down the individual comics. Having these all in one place though is very convenient.

If you want to take a look at the Amazon listing just click here Halo: Oversized Collection.
