Forward Unto Dawn, Episode 2: Review Part 5 Mother Goose…

This is a very brief review, but is important to the story as we see Colonel Mehaffey talk with Lasky about the fight and his burgeoning leadership.

Mehaffey asks Tom what he was thinking when starting a fight.

He seems confused about her comment.

She goes on to say that she sees the soldier he is and that everyone does. He just needs to realize it himself. The way Mehaffey talks to Tom in this scene is more motherly than as a superior officer. In reality, Tom should have been punished, as well as Vickers. My thinking is that since Mehaffey served under Tom’s mom, she may feel duty bound to watch over him. But, it seems to be a little more than that. It could be that Lasky’s mom treated Mehaffey in a similar way and that she is reciprocating that treatment upon Tom. In any event, this dynamic adds a sincere personality to the character of Mehaffey and makes her very likeable, in my opinion.

And am I the only one who finds that scar on her making her just a bit more attractive? LOL

She dismisses Tom by telling him to go get cleaned up and ready for class. That really comes off as motherly and I like that about her.

Forward Unto Dawn, Episode 2: Review Part 4 MESS Hall

Okay, this scene is by far one of the most anticipated of the whole mini-series. We’ve seen bits of this previewed back in July or August and it was shown on Waypoint in pictures.

It’s the fight between Lasky and Vickers. Though it’s a short one, it’s good.

The scene opens with Lasky and Vickers walking with their food trays towards their respective seats in the mess hall.

Note how clean it is. The janitor must be doing a great job…

Orenski looks on, then tells them to halt.

She orders both Lasky and Vickers to give her their quiché as punishment for having her and the squad have to get up early due to the incident of the training mission as seen in the first episode.

Orenski expects better of them, especially Lasky.

What I don’t like about this character is that she’s like some I saw during my time in the Navy. A hardass for the sake of being one. Yes, she’s a squad leader so she needs to be hard to a point. However, she also needs to take some responsibility for their action instead of taunting them by taking their food and egging them on as seen in what happens immediately after.

As Lasky and Vickers leave the table, Vickers comments on how it must be tough for Lasky’s mom knowing she’ll never see her true son come back home again.

This sets Lasky off and he throws a vicious right elbow to the head of Vickers. And it’s on!

Blows are swung and landed by both.

Lasky really takes it to Vickers for the comment and the rest of the cadets look on. I really like this scene as it seems FINALLY Lasky has grown a pair. Fighting isn’t always the way to go. But dammit, when someone is constantly being pushed, if you’re the one pushing, you better expect a push back eventually.

Officer on Deck!

Colonel Mehaffey looks on as the two combatants get up from their scrum.

Hmm, who’s this guy and why does he have a space mop? LOL

Battered but not beaten, Lasky gets to his feet.

Is that a smirk or smile of approval on Mehaffey’s lips?

And finally Vickers looking worse for wear.

This scene really is the break out scene of the episode. Lasky finally shows in detail the man he can be. I for one am glad to see he finally took charge of a situation. Violently yes, but he took charge.

Forward Unto Dawn, Episode 2: Review Part 3 Lies and Spies

As this scene opens we first get a beautiful shot of the space elevator and the lush forest right next to the base.

Here we see Cadet Chen outright lie to his father.

Next a series of shots from Sullivan’s screen as well as conversation between he and Dima Tchakova.

What’s interesting in this scene is that there is a clear frame of a Spartan hand. Sullivan asks Dima not to tell her mom. So wait, who is Dima’s mom then? Hmm. Note that the Covenant symbols appear a few times during this sequence.

If Sully isn’t an ONI spy now, he’s going to make a great one in the future. I’m also wondering if he and Dima have a thing going on between them? That would be another good dynamic.

Forward Unto Dawn, Episode 2: Review Part 2 Wake Up Call

Review Part two is about the rude awakening Hastati Squad gets for it’s failure on the training field.

Immediately after the first scene of Cortana in thought, the episode cuts to Tom Lasky in bed.

Startled the squad gets dressed and heads out into the main hallway. (Let me tell you folks, it happens like this in boot camp. I recall being woken up like this or worse at 4am. It’s not pretty and you are very disoriented. Again, I know this form being in the NAVY.)

Orenski plays the part of a company commander well as she is barking orders at the freshly woken cadets.

Now in this next pic we see General Black. This is one thing I’d disagree with. It’s definitely not usual to have a commanding officer of a base be at a wake up call like this. I’d have to guess because it’s an officer cadet base and a smaller base that he would be there. Again though it’s not the norm for a commanding officer.

The squad is finishing up getting ready in a hurry.

Silva finishes getting ready first.

Vickers is next, but comes up short as he’s not completely ready.

Chen just completely fails and General Black calls him out on it:

Lasky is admonished from a,sight by Black regarding his brother Cadman being a real soldier.

The look on Tom’s face is very telling. He’s getting pissed off and frustrated by constantly being compared to his brother and living under his shadow.

This whole scene is completely believable, but for Black being there, but I can forgive that as important characters need to be present.

That last shot of Lasky makes me feel like there is going to be a change in Lasky and it happens in a scene coming up.

Forward Unto Dawn, Episode 2: Review Part 1 Cortana in Thought.

This the first part of an 11-part review of the second episode of Forward Unto Dawn. Here we listen to Cortana talking about how for 4 years+ she’s not had anything to do but think.

The episode opens with the Forward Unto Dawn floating aimlessly about.

Cortana seems to have some bouts of Rampancy during this brief speech.

Now what I like up to think point is the direct correlation of blue and cold as well as darkness. Cortana is blue of course but has essentially gone “cold” by not being able to do anything but think. And she has gone “dark” as well by not being able to be in communication with others. Though she does try:

I love these graphics of the display screens. VERY believable. The ice looks great as it accumulates on the screen.

Finally, we see Cortana, not as her normal female frame, but as a blue glowing orb.

But wait, she turns red….hmm

Again, a nice set-up in the Halo present of Halo 4 that transitions to the past of Tom Lasky at the academy.

Short review section? Yeah, but I’m keeping them that way so there isn’t much text to read, yet enough to cover the key scenes.

Thanks to my bud POD Dust Storm for inviting me to do the Podcast with him. It was fun. Though I think I sounded a bit too analytical. I’ll have to work on that for next time.

Let me know what you thought of the podcast by replying below, or tweeting me on Twitter.

Forward Unto Dawn episode 2 11-part review coming shortly.

I just finished a Podcast with POD Dust Storm, so that held me back a little on getting the reviews done. I know 11 seems like a lot, however there were some very important if short scenes that need to be review separately. That is why there are so many parts.

As well I had to edit over 200 screenshots for the reviews.

After the reviews are done, I’ll get the graphic novel for episode 2 done, but that definitely won’t be until tomorrow.

Halo 4 at New York Comicon. Breakdown of gameplay!

I had the fortune to play several games of Halo 4. Below I’ll break them down as much as possible. If there is something more you’d like to know of the specific games I played that I may not have mentioned, please reply in the comments below.

Keep in mind I’m NOT an MLG gamer. So you are getting these breakdowns from the normal (ish) gamer. You know, the type that most of us are.

Slayer on Ragnarok:
I spawned on Lakeside base. Immediately I went for the Mantis. Folks this vehicle is the SHIZNIT! It’s freakin’ awesome. Scorpion what? Meh, that’s so last trilogy…

While in the Mantis I destoryed the other Mantis, a Banshee, 2 ghosts, and a slew of Spartans all before finally being taken down by team shooting from the other side with a Banshee delivering me the most damage from above. Of course I promptly went over and stole their Mantis and continued on my reign of terror. The Mantis moves fast. Faster than the Scorpion. It’s lateral movements are great and it can pivot on it’s hips much better than the Scorpion ever did on it’s mount. The Mantis can not be toppled, only destroyed. So you don’t have to worry about it falling over on you. As for what happens when it goes over a cliff? I literally falls straight down landing on it’s feet. Again, no worries about being toppled over. The machine gun can overheat quickly so watch for that. As well the rocket arm has to reload about the time as normal shoulder mounted rockets have to reload. However, these rockets felt more powerful.

During this match I also got into a Banshee and did some damage as well as a ghost. The Banshee doesn’t fly around as fast as seems easier to shoot down. The Ghost CAN take some punishment again! YES! As for moving around as a Spartan, you’re quick. With having sprint as a permanent ability, it’s VERY useful for getting around on the map quickly. So glad it was added in this way. Now because of this, the game moves FAST! You’ll need to adjust to the pace of the game. Since everyone has sprint plus whatever other ability, scoping in on people might be tougher for some than others. I didn’t use a scoped weapon in this match other than a BR so it didn’t play that much into it for me here. The BR though, wow, SO good to have that back in my hands.

My team won that match. I definitely was the vehicle master and destroyer of the match.

Next was CTF on Adrift. On my team was BravoMLG, so well, the outcome was pretty much already decided… Still, I had fun and use Promethean Vision liberally during this game. On small maps this ability can be very useful. I also used the DMR here. WOW, it’s POWERFUL. The sound of the shoot like a CHOONK! It delivers a PUNCH! As well, I got to use the suppressor. It really can rip spartans to shreds. The sticky detonator is great. better than the grenade launcher of of Reach, you can stick this grenade pretty much anywhere then blow it up when you want to. Stick it on a wall just before a corner and get an enemy to follow you around it. I called in a weapons drop and got a Forerunner sniper. There was a 343 person next to me just about to tell me how to use it when, BAM quick scope headshot. My enemy was dead. And the 343er looked impressed saying I knew how to use it. For the rest of the match I played defense. We won 3-1 captures.

After this I played a game of Regicide on Haven. Awe yeah, this game type is AWESOME! I went 29-5 and won. As the king you rack up points quickly the longer you stay alive. You can earn a “Reign of Terror” medal for lasting so long and get an overshield. After a longer time as king consecutively you also get greater mobility. I got a triple kills, took out some enemies with the pulse grenade, used the Boltshot. The charged up shot is very effective at taking out shields and finishing off enemies.

Next up was Oddball on Complex. Lots of running about. Easy to take out a ghost here if you can get it somewhat cornered. Lots of places to run around on. Holding the ball can be easy if you’ve got cover, but due to the pace of the game, that won’t last long. I used the Scattershot here and killed some enemies with that satisfying disintegration. My team lost, however I held the ball the longest of anyone during the game. Even in the loss, I had a lot of fun. I can’t wait to explore these maps and plan out strategies for them.

Now, keep in mind, EVERYTHING was unlocked. All armor, all loadouts. Everything. So I doubt the game will move THIS fast at launch. However, as people rank up, you will notice a difference. Will it be slight? Will it be game changing? Again, hard to tell, since everyone had all the options available to them. This definitely will separate skilled/long time players with new ones. It will also severely hamper those who would seek to start new accounts to pwn people with as they won’t have all these options available to them. While they might be good, the prolific player will have a good chance at beating them due to better loadouts and specializations. Now THAT is what I call balanced. It really does help those who aren’t as skilled have a chance. And really, though I consider myself above average in skill, I”m happy that everyone will have the chance to unlock all of these things. I firmly believe everyone should have everything and use the full game dynamics. It just means that lesser skilled players and those that don’t play as much will take longer to get to those unlockables, but it’s there for them!

I have to say that the sound quality of the game far and above exceeds what I had hoped for. The sound of the armor as it hits the ground comes with a satisfying choonk. The weapons fire sound powerful regardless of what weapon you are using. Everything is really amped up!

Lighting is simply amazing. Well lit yet great shadows make for believable settings no matter the map you play on.

It’s VERY easy to see that 343 has taken it’s time to get everything right. From talking with those folks at the con, you absolutely get the sense that they all have a passion for Halo and are just as much fans of the franchise as we are.

Folks, the Halo Legacy is in GREAT HANDS! I can’t wait till all of you too can share in the excitement and fun that is Halo 4 to come!
