Halo 5 NEWS!!! Officially called Halo 5 Guardians!

Halo5-Primary-TeaserArt-Vertical-RGB-Final-jpg

From MicroSoft/XBOX:

Any time you transition to a new platform, there is the opportunity to look at things with a new perspective. For us at 343 Industries, the launch of the Xbox One was an opportunity to think about what stories we wanted to tell, how to tell them, and how best to push the “Halo” franchise to showcase the platform. And, most importantly, combining our passion for “Halo” with the vocal and informative input from our fans.

“Halo” isn’t simply a perennial game franchise, it’s a part of the Xbox platform itself. In terms of innovation and ideation, it’s sometimes important to people who might not even play “Halo.” And of course it’s a passion and an essential experience for two generations of gamers.  So we asked ourselves, how do we begin and where do we go with “Halo” on Xbox One?

In the past, “Halo” games have pushed the Xbox forward, showcasing the console and its ecosystem in entertaining and innovative ways. Making a “Halo” game that runs at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade, is non-trivial.  It’s a task that we, at 343 Industries, are taking very seriously to ensure we deliver the “Halo” game that fans deserve, and a game that is built from the ground up for Xbox One.

I’m happy to reveal that “Halo 5: Guardians,” the next installment in the legendary saga of the Master Chief, will launch on Xbox One in fall of 2015.  In the tradition of every “Halo” game since its debut in 2001, it is a massive and exciting project.

“Halo 5: Guardians” is a bigger effort than “Halo 4.”  That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine.  Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.

It’s a game that will hopefully demonstrate the talent, learnings and abilities of the 343 Industries team. A game that will incorporate the things we learned from “Halo 4” about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale – and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the “Halo” universe.

HFFL: This is great news so far!

And 2015 won’t simply be the year of “Halo 5: Guardians,” it will also be a year that offers us a unique opportunity. The opportunity to invite old friends and new audiences into that universe through the “Halo” television series, launched as a unique collaboration with Steven Spielberg and some of the finest creative minds in the business.  A series that will stand alone, as well as complement and enrich the game experience.  We’ll have more to share on the “Halo” television series as we near its projected fall 2015 release.

YES!!! Finally some news!!!

Halo Concept Art: Reach Equipment and Characters

Today we take a peek at some equipment and spartan armor of Halo Reach.

haloreach_equipment_civilian_milling_machines_by_ryan_demitaAbove we see some machinery. You can find the mechanical arm at the bottom, on the last level of the campaign. It’s within the final room just before you climb the ladder to use the MAC canon.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_weapons_explosives_fury_bomb_by_isaac_hannaford
I can really appreciate this piece. The shading is superb and the metallic sheen is near perfect for a piece of concept art.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_parts_powerup_mountVarious equipment packs. If I recall, the one near top right is the M-spec reentry pack.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_full_customization_concepts_by_isaac_hannafordVarious armor sets. The red color of the armor shows some of the differentiation and multiple configurations the Spartan IIIs can have.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_full_markiv_by_isaac_hannaford

A concept showing both the male and female default armor of Noble 6.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_full_spartan_portrait_01_by_isaac_hannafordAnother armor concept. This one makes me think ODST meets Spartan.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_full_spartan_portrait_02_by_isaac_hannafordDefault Noble 6? Some additions.

Often as is shown by the red armor pic and the one immediately above, base models are used which then have layers added to them to create a different effect.

The following are 9 graphics of Spartan helmet concepts.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_cqb_helmet_by_isaac_hannafordThe CQB helmet of Reach. While this color version didn’t make it in the game, I’m very happy that the helmet itself did.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_eod_helmet_01_by_isaac_hannafordhaloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_eod_helmet_02_by_isaac_hannaford.jpghaloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_eod_helmet_03_by_isaac_hannaford.jpgThe above three show subtle differences in the EOD helmet, most notably the visor.

Any one of those would have been great for the design in-game.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_gungir_helmet_by_isaac_hannafordHere we have the Gungnir helmet. This is the first Spartan Helmet to feature a near visor-less visage. But for the small eyehole, there is no apparent way by which the Spartan can see out. It’s presumed the helmet has a view screen within that shows the Spartan their surroundings. The design is very cool. Something even more advanced than what we’re used to for Spartans. I am glad however the Bungie stopped at this one and didn’t create anymore without visors.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_helmet_by_isaac_hannafordThis looks to be the final concept of the Mark V [b] helmet. here in green, ultimately as we know the default became steel in color. I love the clean lines of this design. It looks completely plausible as a helmet, even in rendered form.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_helmets_by_isaac_hannafordYou may have likely seen this image before. While some of these designs, didn’t make it into the game, it appears 343 borrowed a couple for Halo 4. The bottom left and bottom right looks similar in concept to the Orbital and Venator helmets, respectively.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_recon_helmet_by_isaac_hannafordHere the Recon helmet has had a slight redesign from previous game. I like this version a lot. For some reason, that bottom one reminds me of a snake. I can’t quite put my finger on why though.

haloreach_equipment_unsc_armor_mjolnir_helmet_skull_helmet_by_isaac_hannafordAnd finally for this article, we have the HAZOP helmet. HAZOP meaning, hazardous operations. Most people refer to it as the skull helmet though. This was one of my favorite helmet designs of Reach. Now if this had also been combined with the actual skull helmet, it would have been beyond cool.

Once again, this is a little late. Heh, I have to blame my wife on this one…She started playing the Avengers movie right next to me. That made writing this extremely long as I couldn’t help but watch most of the movie as it played. LOL.

Tomorrow we look at some of the Halo 4 counterparts to these concepts.

What was your favorite helmet in Reach and why? Let me know by replying below!

Some news of the Halo digital feature!

Mike Colter, an actor on the tv show “Good Wife” has been tapped to star in the digital feature. Several sites are reporting this. I got the following from Nerdist.com:

mike-colter-970x545

Structured similarly to Machinima’s Halo: Forward Unto Dawn and written by Paul Scheuring, the digital project will not follow the Master Chief we know and love. Rather, it will follow a different 26th century surgically-enhanced super soldier. Colter is likely to play a new character named Marlowe, who TheWrap describes as a “rising star in a futuristic army who is troubled by aspects of the military industrial complex he inhabits. Approaching combat situations with caution and logic, he inspires loyalty in his fellow Spartans.” Sounds like a real stand up guy, eh? Although considering Ridley Scott is producing, I’d say the chances of him being a secret robot are pretty damn high.

Now this is interesting news. We suspected this wouldn’t follow Master Chief as it’s likely that 343 wants to keep him for the next Halo game. So the question is, will Colter’s character be a Spartan II, III, or IV? I’m going to go with IV here. In part due to the description above. “troubled by aspects of the military industrial complex”. This is not something Spartan IIs were known for. Even Spartan IIIs, while a being a little bit of loose canons didn’t typically think like this. However, Spartan IVs, YES. Since they were brought into the program at adult ages, they already come with experience of the outside world. So those feelings could carry over.

In any event, I’m glad to find SOMETHING about the show. Now we know it WILL have Spartans for sure.

The Halo Bulletin 5-14-14

halobulletinheader_5-14_800-2e42f7b361e2427a88aecdb1177f7d6f

The weather in the Pacific Northwest over the past few days has been fantastic. The sun is shining each and every day, we’re into the 70s, and there is no rain in sight. I know this because I’ve been checking the weather forecast on my computer from inside the studio, where we are prudently planning for things ahead, one of those things being E3. By the time everyone leaves the studio each evening, the sun has likely gone down, but we move closer and closer to being able to share things with you early next month in Los Angeles. Many of you have been sending us countdown tweets or reminders for the past few weeks (and for many of you, months) which generally read something along the lines of “100 days until E3 (insert really excited exclamation here!)” and while we’re excited to see the event draw nearer, we realize we now have less than 30 days before the show. This preparation has us quite busy, so we have a lighter Bulletin today, but I managed to bother the Franchise team to answer some lore questions, and we’ve got a few Matchmaking goodies to talk about. Let’s get into it!

HFFL: Yes, HURRY UP E3! I would like some news of the Halo XBOX One Edition and if it will come with or without the Kinect!

Matchmaking Playlist Update

mm-banner_800-c5838ffa1ee14388948faa29350c14f8

This Monday, we introduced Dominion Light, a 4 vs. 4 playlist that features smaller maps and slightly modified settings for smaller teams. We hope you’ve been enjoying the game type and the hunt for any last commendations, as well as the Commando armor set. Additionally, we updated Halo 4’s “Select Playlist” screen UI to indicate which playlists are new, featured, and which have received new maps and/or game types. We’ll continue to update this screen to provide an easy way to see what’s been added. Next week, we’ll have some news regarding the upcoming King of the Hill playlist as well as some other updates to a variety of playlists, but for now, we’ve got a new Community Choice Poll. This week, we want to know which game type you’d like to see featured in the new upcoming King of the Hill featured playlist!

Community Choice

5-14_commchoice-3set-e77443756725402cbbdd172e248f2487

Shotgun King
In the same family as Shotgun Ricochet and Shotgun CTF, Shotgun King equips players with Thruster Packs, Plasma Grenades, and a Shotgun. Get ready for some up close and personal combat.

Rocket King
Rocket King is not a game type for the faint of heart. Players willing to get in the Hill in this game type need to be ready for immediate explosions as well as lots of respawns.

HFFL: YES! I love chaotic game types like this. I’m voting for this one!

Mosh Pit
A game type that will be familiar to Halo 3 players, Mosh Pit uses one central Hill that doesn’t move, and provides players in the Hill with increased shields. There is only one rule: if you’re killed, just head back to the Hill and jump right in.

HFFL: This is a pretty good choice too. I’m all for one hip and one hip only! Lots of predictability in this game type.

Head here to vote on the Halo Waypoint forums, where voting will be open for approximately four days. Check back next week to find out which game type is the winner and will be included in the playlist!

Knowledge Drop: Community Q&A

After last month’s Knowledge Drop, we received more questions than ever on Twitter and the forums, and I’ve been sending them over to the legendary Franchise team in search of some answers. Learn about some lore below, and if you have any questions of your own, send them over to us on Twitter or in the discuss link at the end of this article. If you already sent us your questions but haven’t been answered yet, fear not – they are patiently waiting in line with the other questions, and may very well be answered soon.

Question: Do the ships of Battlegroup Dakota have class names, or are they just “ship class A/B/C”?
-@TheTrekspert

Answer: Interestingly, these ships were all part of the most recent Visual Guide, but didn’t make it in due to space limitations. Here are their names, but alas, which is which? Some of the more vigilant of Halo spaceship fans will likely be able to tell.

HFFL: For those that don’t know, Battlegroup Dakaota was at Earth when the Didact attacked it and later joined with the UNSC Infinity for the mission back to Requiem.

Vindication-class Light Battleship
Length: 1,580m (5,183ft)

Poseidon-class Light Carrier
Length: 719m (2,359ft)

Strident-class Heavy Frigate
Length: 1,887ft (575m)

One hint is that the ships are not completely to scale with each other as objects in the game, but the dimensions above represent their fictional sizes. It’s possible we may dig deeper one day.

HFFL: Okay, since they want to be a little secretive and you folks KNOW I love Halo’s spaceships, HERE are the ships:

In the graphic below, they are in order as presented above, Vindication, Poseidon, Strident:

3 UNSC ships 2

(side note, I pulled the different images from the net. I don’t know who the person is who got the screenshots.)

Here they are in relative scale to each other:

3ships scale size

HFFL: (I’ll be adding these to my Halo ships scale sized poster shortly. (Likely tomorrow)

Q: What ever happened to Endurance? Did she Compose herself to drive a Promethean?
-@Mr_Admirals

A: Keeping in mind that the terminals in Halo 4 are impressions of reality created by the Domain, whereas the novels are far more literal in their interpretation of the universe, you actually get a glimpse of Endurance at the end of the terminals when the Librarian takes Requiem’s Prometheans under her control. Her fate is clearly conveyed here.

Q: In the 1st level, the Dawn has a vacuum resistant energy barrier. Was that tech taken from the Covies or made by humans?
-Onyx81

A: A little of both. There had been early experimentation with these kinds of barriers, but recovered Covenant technology ultimately tipped the scales to actual production.

Q: What made everyone of every race/culture/ethnicity suddenly drop all hate for each other and come together to form the UNSC?
-LimaOmegaLima10

A: The UNSC is an imperative of the UEG and both are the offspring of the Interplanetary War (and really the answer to it), which actually saw humanity at a state where the above kinds of hatreds weren’t the main ones in circulation. Frieden and Koslovic ideologies dominated the landscape and produced a variety of kinds of animosity. The UNSC wasn’t forged during a time of peace, but rather as a solution to a violent war.

Screenshot Spotlight: Sticky Detonator

Last week, we turned the spotlight on Multi-Team. Take a gander at the following Sticky Detonator screenshots, and maybe even find inspiration to make your own.

Screenshot spotlight Sticky Det

HFFL: I like “Cast Glare” (more for the Spartan’s armor than the sticky set, “Out of Ammo” again, more for the Spartan (love that crackling effect), and “Shocking“. Great use of a light filter there!

For your chance at being in the next spotlight, take a screenshot featuring the Shotgun and then tag it with “Shotgun” and “Halo Waypoint,” and maybe, just maybe, yours will be featured in the next Halo Bulletin!

And with that, this week’s Bulletin comes to a close.
Until next week,
Bravo

Halo Concept Art: Halo 4 UNSC, Cortana and Master Chief

Each of these articles I’ve endeavored to show you something new. Today might buck that trend, depending on what you’e seen before. Many of these were part of the advertising campaign for Halo 4. Still, I hope you enjoy them. As always, if you ant to see them bigger, click on the pic!

First up personnel of the UNSC.

halo_4_scientistmale_final_sheet_by_kory_lynn_hubbellThis is one of the official orthogonal views from Halo 4.This would have been a typical male scientist aboard the UNSC Infinity. We didn’t quite see this version. Though it’s pretty safe to assume it evolved into Dr. Glassman as well as the several unhooded scientists seen in Spartan Ops.

halo_4_scientistmale_variant_2_by_kory_lynn_hubbellAnd here’s the hooded version. While the previous is similar in detail, this version is much better, just by the addition of color. I can’t stress enough how much color application to concepts helps to bring them to like.

halo_4_unsc_fleet_officer_lasky_by_kory_lynn_hubbellCommander Lasky. Now this is a proper finalized concept. All the details are there. Heh, strangely though the right one is incorrect. Note the forearm device. It’s in the wrong spot on the right. Obviously the head of the character changed. I’m glad for it too as this one looks a bit bedraggled and war torn. I appreciate the friendlier face we got in the game.

Lasky Trivia:
• He was the leading character of the Forward unto Dawn miniseries.
• There was a planned action figure by McFarlane that got to the near final stages before being pulled. (Much to the chagrin of collectors, me included!)
• Mega Bloks included a micro action figure of Lasky in their Halo Mega Bloks Mammoth set. (You can see my multi-part review of it here: Pt1, Pt2, Pt3, Pt4.)

Next is a compilation of various Marines seen in Halo 4.
halo_4_unsc_marines_by_kory_lynn_hubbell
halo_4_unsc_marine_infantry_2_final_by_kory_lynn_hubbell
And a close-up of one of them. Now, while I wasn’t fond of many of the aesthetic changes made to Halo, I actually have grown to like this marine style. For me, I think the Halo 3 style will be the truest version of them, but these are definitely second to them. In the compilation pic, you can see through subtle changes in torso armor, helmets, and color, 343 achieved a varied look without having to redesign each particular version of the marines. That’s great planning there.

Now Cortana. Sweet sweet Cortana, what did 343 do to you… sigh. Before I talk about a few pieces, I have to add that I was disappointed that 343 found it necessary to kill her off. In my opinion, she’s the number 2 character in the whole of Halo. She’s only second to Master Chief. Considering her unique creation, I had hoped she would survive rampancy and achieve meta-stability. Or at the least as the campaign went on, Chief would have found a way to save her. It’s not going to be the same, without her. Okay…now the pics.

halo_4_cortanaThese 3, to me, almost appear to be a little evil. Now that could be the rampancy state starting to show through. The other thing is the face. She looks a lot like Christina Ricci, the actress.

halo_4_vinyl_cortana_ks_by_john_libertoIn the above, I get a feeling of a cross-over between the Halo 3 Cortana and the Halo 4 Cortana. I really like this version and would have been quite happy with it being in the game. The color work here, even in mostly blue hues is very well done. There is a lot of depth to the rendering.

halo_4_chief_cortana_final_by_john_libertoThe above was made popular as a wraparound magazine cover. The front half showing Chief, while the back showing Cortana. This has also been available as prints. I can appreciate the work that went into this one. Tons of detail. Also, if you take a moment to consider it, with nearly everything else being blue, except Chief, his seeming to walk away from Cortana and her just looking on, this seems to have been a clue as to the ending of the game.

Using that last one, we’ll segue over to Master Chief.

halo_4_master-chief-sketchThis early sketch of Master Chief shows his armor in a very different version from what was ultimately used. Here the helmet is a lot more simpler as are the shoulder plates. As a concept though, it’s a great place to start the creative process that eventually led us to the Chief in Halo 4 that we know.

halo_4_m-092_kill_small_by_kory_lynn_hubbellThis storyboard concept of the final battle between Master Chief and the Didact is quite fun to read. The Didact looks a bit like General Greivous from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. I like the caption used for Chief in the fourth panel. (Second row, first column) I’d love to see more of this kind of concept art released as well as it shows the creative process really at work.

Many of the next 10 are well known, so I’m going to just post them with little commentary and let you appreciate them.

Some of those have already become iconic to Halo 4. This is fantastic art, even if not so much in the concept phase.

Tomorrow we’ll look at other Spartan armor from Reach as well as some equipment concepts.

Thanks again as always for checking out HaloFanForLife.com. There’s a lot more to come, so keep coming back to see loads more Halo stuff!

Halo Concept Art: Halo 4’s Covenant, Flood and Forerunners

Hello folks. Sorry for the late post on this. I was quite busy today.

As you can see by the title, we’ll take a look at characters from Halo 4 that are either alien in nature of flood. Let’s start off with the Covenant.

halo_4_artehalo4cortana_kotakubr08In this graphic you can see the near in-game version greyed out at the upper left corner. The larger one reminds me more of the Reach Zealot with a mix of Ultra as well. I think I actually prefer the larger one. The large ornamental helmet is more reminiscent of Elite helmet of high rank. There is a slightly odd pairing of colors in this concept. It’s as if the artist (or someone directing them) were not sure of which color to go with, so they chose a hybridization of sorts.

halo_4_artehalo4cortana_kotakubr09Now here we have an Elite minor. This is very close to the in-game version. I definitely like the look of this elite. Thinking back to Halo CE, this looks like the natural progression for the armor of the minor. Kudos to 343 on this simple redesign!

halo_4_brute_rmx_by_paul_richardsWhat’s curious about the above pic is that we didn’t get Brutes in the game, with exception to one cutscene. Perhaps this concept was to be that Brute. He looks very imposing. That shield he’s holding looks a lot like a Hunter’s shield. In any event, I don’t think any of us would want to mess with him. I miss Brutes in Halo. I do hope they make they’re way back in to the next one in some iteration.

halo_4_creature-designLastly for the Covies is the redesigned Jackal (Kig Yar). The largest one is closer to what we’ve had in previous games. Though the taller and stunted beak is prominent. The near final designs on the left of this image show various Jackal ranks. I love everything about them, except for the head. I really don’t see why 343 felt the need to change that. Yes, they look more fierce, but they’ve also lost their “lithe-ness”. That head makes them look more bulky. Since Halo 4’s launch, we’ve now had an in-universe explanation that this is yet another sub-species of Jackals. GRRRR….stick with continuity folks. See, this is why you do not just change designs to change them… As I said, everything else is great, but that head redesign just kills it for me. I don’t expect 343 to go back to a previous version in the next game, sigh. So, we’re stuck with this stunted beak version. Strangely enough, we DO see the classic long thin versions in the Halo Escalation comic books by Darkhorse. So if you are craving to see them in a new format, I suggest getting those comics.

Moving on to the Flood.

halo_4_flood_dispersal_01_by_paul_richardsWe did not expect to see any kind of flood in this game as they had been effectively eradicated once again. Or at least that we know of. Above shows various forms. They might be infection forms or carrier forms or even a means to disperse the flood through space? There’s a lot of variety there. Perhaps when (and I do expect them to return), the flood are back in Halo, we’ll see some of these designs crop up again.

halo_4_flood_dispersal_04_by_paul_richards

halo_4_infection_flood_02_by_paul_richardsIn the above pic the anatomy of the flood’s claw arm is shown in various forms. All look dangerous with pincers and jagged edges. The choice to with up that arm from left to right is a little perplexing. Of course in matchmaking it makes sense as you use that arm to strike at Spartans.

halo_4_infection_flood_03_by_paul_richards

halo_4_infection_flood_04_by_paul_richardsIn the rendering above the claw arm is still on the left. It still looks like the typical flood we know, except that the head isn’t snapped back in some strange pose.

halo_4_infection_flood_05_by_paul_richardsNow this concept I like. It shows a great variance between designs. The one marked #2 looks more like a Promethean Knight’s head. Perhaps that is where it was developed from? Number 3 is the one we got in game. Number 1 is very odd. Who knows, perhaps these might become Flood forms in future games and are from previously unknown alien species.

halo_4_infection_flood_06_by_paul_richardsNow I think it’s safe to say we know were the exploding head idea for the Knights came from.

halo_4_infection_flood_07_by_paul_richardsThe large head here looks more like something out of Star Wars. Jedi master Saesee Tiin to be exact. I’m glad it wasn’t picked.

halo_4_infection_flood_08_by_paul_richards

Undoubtedly and early sketch, with not much defined detail.

Looking at the flood concepts, it seems like minimal effort was put into fleshing them out, in lieu of just getting more designs out for someone to choose from. It was likely known early on that the flood would not have a large presence in Halo 4. Thus, no reason to take a ton of time to develop a lot of assets for them.

halo_4_spartan_infection_flood_armor_01_by_paul_richardsFinally we do get some color in the concepts. The middle shooing the infected parts of a spartan. Now here’s one thing to note. Spartan’s that I recall, were not supposed to be able to be infected. Either that or they tried to with Master Chief and just couldn’t crack his armor. Meh…

halo_4_spartan_infection_flood_armor_03_by_paul_richardsAnother take on the form, this time with more depth to it.

halo_4_spartan_infection_flood_armor_02_by_paul_richardsFor the last of the Flood concepts, we have the official orthogonal view rendering. I hope you can see by the addition of color really helps to engage the viewer. This rendering has a lot more detail as well. While I’m still a bit confused as to the total redesign, I’m okay with it.

Now, Forerunners!

halo_4_ancient_promethean_01_by_paul_richardsAncient Prometheans looks quite different from what we got in-game. These of course are the Forerunner Prometheans, not the composed Knights that were put into the game. That slight bot of orange helps to define an other wise bland color palette. The designs themselves are pretty cool. I would have liked to have seen them in full color though, rather than mostly greys.

halo_4_ancient_promethean_by_paul_richards
halo_4_artehalo4cortana_kotakubr13
In the concept above, we have the Knight as it might have been. Able to change form and had a full sized human inside, rather than nothing and something slightly more than ornamental small arms in the front of it. I know I would have preferred this design over what we got. I just think the Knights in Halo 4 look too clunky.

And finally for this article, we have a drawing of sentinels. Thankfully these all look similarly to ones from previous games. I’m glad 343 didn’t venture too far away from that classic design.

XBOX One drops in price to $399…with no Kinect

The news was revealed today on XBOX.com that the XBOX One started June 9 will have an alternate version that is kinect-less. The price drops to $399 for that version.

Here is what XBOX’s Phil Spencer (Head of XBOX) has to say officially about this:
________________

Since the beginning, we have focused on delivering great games and entertainment experiences for you. Your feedback matters to us and it shapes the products and services we build. Your feedback showed up in the Xbox One console we launched back in November and in the monthly updates we’ve delivered since.

Today, we’re excited to share more ways your feedback is impacting the products we build.

First, beginning on June 9th, in all markets where Xbox One is sold, we will offer Xbox One starting at $399*. This is a new console option that does not include Kinect. For $399, our new Xbox One offering will continue to deliver access to the best blockbuster games like “Titanfall,” “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” “Forza Motorsport 5,” “Dead Rising 3,” and the upcoming “Watch Dogs,” “Destiny” and “Sunset Overdrive.” You will also be able to access popular entertainment apps, such as Twitch, YouTube, and Netflix, as well as watch live TV and use OneGuide.  Finally, you will continue to be able to use many of the unique features of Xbox One including the ability to get game invites while you watch TV, switch between games and entertainment apps, enjoy Twitch broadcasts, and upload your favorite gaming moments.

Next, we’re bringing more value to Xbox Live Gold members and offering all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners access to entertainment apps whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership.  In early June, here is what you can expect from the new generation of Xbox Live:

  • Free games with Games with Gold**. Since Games with Gold launched on Xbox 360 a year ago, over 12 million people have enjoyed great free games, resulting in nearly 200 million hours of free fun playing Games with Gold titles. We’ve been learning from your feedback and have focused on making improvements each month to the selection of titles. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Games with Gold for Xbox 360 and as a thank you for helping shape this program, members will receive an additional free Xbox 360 game in June. The Games with Gold titles for Xbox 360 in June are “Dark Souls,” “Charlie Murder” and a bonus game of “Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.” We’re pleased to bring Games with Gold to Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One in June. Members will have subscription-based access to free games ranging from top hits to breaking indie stars. The program will launch on Xbox One with “Max: The Curse of Brotherhood” and “Halo: Spartan Assault.” A single Gold membership will get you access to the free games for both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

  • Exclusive Discounts. Deals with Gold will also launch for Xbox One in June, delivering discounts for great games each month, with significant savings for Xbox Live Gold members. The first titles offered in June will include “Forza Motorsport 5,” “Ryse: Son of Rome,” and a few other surprises. In the coming months, we will offer significant savings of up to 50 – 75 percent off certain titles. This program will continue to be available for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360. And new on Xbox One, we will launch a virtual VIP room exclusive to Xbox Live Gold members where we will feature free games, monthly deals, and other great benefits.
  • Popular entertainment apps will be available for all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners. Xbox 360 has been a leader in delivering entertainment experiences for years, with over 170 global entertainment apps and experiences available today. We’re constantly adding new partners and experiences to the growing catalog on Xbox One. Coming in June, anyone with an Xbox will be able to access popular entertainment experiences – whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership. This includes great gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more.*** Microsoft experiences including Internet Explorer, Skype, OneDrive and OneGuide will also be available to all Xbox customers.**** You can find a full list of apps and features that will be available below.

We’ve heard that you want more choices from Xbox One. You want a wide variety of options in your games and entertainment experiences and you also want options in your hardware selection.

To be clear, as we introduce this new Xbox One console option, Kinect remains an important part of our vision.  Many of you are using Kinect for Xbox One every day. In fact, more than 80 percent of you are actively using Kinect, with an average of 120 voice commands per month on each console. Some of the most popular voice commands include “Xbox On,” “Xbox Broadcast” and “Xbox Record That.” We will continue to offer a premium Xbox One with Kinect bundle to deliver voice and gesture controls, biometric sign-in, instant personalization, instant scanning of QR codes, and enhanced features only available with Kinect in games such as “Kinect Sports Rivals,” “Just Dance 2014,” “Project Spark” and more.

If you buy Xbox One for $399 and later decide you want to have all the experiences Kinect enables, we will also offer a standalone sensor for Xbox One later this fall. We’ll share more details about the standalone Kinect for Xbox One in the coming months.

HFFL: Here is my opinion about this. Consoles should be first and FOREMOST about gaming. While I understand Microsoft’s ideas for innovation, the public simply doesn’t want, or was ready for a console that does what they already have in other forms. Those being internet access, cable tv shows, Skype, among others. Yes, some innovation for games will be lost. However, this is clearly a move by MS to compete with Sony more for this generations console race. I see it as a great business move for them as well as the consumer saving $100. It’s a win-win, despite any potential lose of Kinect enabled games.
