Halo 5 First Impressions: destructoid-New Toys Familiar Feel

This is a reblog from destruction:

Halo 5: Guardians has some new toys but a familiar feel
by Rey Gutierrez

Meet Kelly, Fred, Linda, and John!

Master Chief, Cortana, Grunts, Elites and the UNSC, all names that should sound familiar to Halo fans and fans of gaming alike. Before we had “Guardians,” there was just evolved combat in the original Halo: Combat Evolved, which released on the first Xbox on November 15, 2001. Since then, the Halo franchise has endured several sequels, prequels, books, spin-offs, and I’m sure a collection of naughty fan-fiction in the darkest reaches of the Internet. Continue reading

Halo Escalation #22 preview with covers for #23/24!

As per usual, we get a nice little preview of the upcoming issues of Escalation. Today we have issue 22’s preview. Before I get to that, let’s see what Darkhorse is saying about it:

“The Absolute Record” Part 4—On a hidden world, Spartan Commander Palmer and the fugitive Dr. Catherine Halsey go head to head for control over the ultimate trove of Forerunner secrets. The six-part sequel to Spartan Ops ratchets up to its explosive conclusion in this thrilling issue by Duffy Boudreau (BlackAcre) and Douglas Franchin (Person of Interest).

Okay, on with the cover and the first four pages (via Darkhorse.com) Continue reading

35 DAYS OUT: HANDS ON WITH HALO 5’S CAMPAIGN
By Arthur Gies

We spend more than two hours with Halo 5’s campaign to bring you our impressions — and video recaps of two full campaign levels

After playing Halo 5: Guardians‘s campaign for, give or take, about two hours and change, I am both much more excited for it, and a little disappointed in what I’ve seen.

Please note that this text avoids discussion of Halo 5‘s story entirely, primarily because there are plot spoilers we’re prohibited from discussing and also because two missions isn’t enough to make any substantive sort of observation. Also, because it’s 2015 and there’s a tendency to label the lightest bit of impressions or thoughts about a game near its release a “review,” I need to say up front that this is not a review. I’ve played a fraction of Halo 5‘s campaign, and what I played is a build a few months away from release. It was slightly glitchy in spots and it wasn’t final, so some things could change in either direction. Continue reading

Halo 5 First Impressions: game informer -Coming to Life

Halo 5: Guardians’ Campaign Feels Like A Series Coming To Life
by Mike Futter

H5CampaignSept-610

There’s no denying the power of Microsoft’s Halo franchise. The series has been synonymous with the Xbox since the original hulking black and green console launched in 2001.

And as much as I’ve enjoyed past outings, something about the two Halo 5: Guardians campaign missions makes me feel like the series is coming alive in a new way. Past adventures with the Master Chief and Halo ODST’s Rookie have felt solitary to the point of loneliness. Even with Cortana’s infrequent chatter, Halo made its bones pitting one man against an army of absurdly powerful adversaries.   Continue reading

Halo 5: Guardians’ campaign isn’t as Call of Duty-esque as you think
by Joe Skrebels

Halo is approaching “holy text” levels of significance in people’s minds by this point. Bungie’s famous 30-second combat loop doctrine is the unimpeachable, transformative sacrament, those wide-open, blood-spattered sandboxes our promised land, with shiny, shiny Master Chief standing above it all, a faceless gunmetal Messiah. Suggest that any of these elements be changed or, Cortana help you, be the one changing them and watch as conservative zeal rains forth like so much 140-character brimstone. Continue reading

‘Halo 5: Guardians’ is good fun, but it’s better with friends
by Nathan Ingraham

H5-Guardians-Enemy-Lines-Establishing-Kraken-01

I’m a pretty huge video game fan, but I’ve never played a minute of the Halo series in my life; I’ve never even owned an Xbox console. As such, it’s somewhat appropriate that a preview of Halo 5: Guardians was my introduction to the series — it’s the first Halo game for the Xbox One, and it’s undoubtedly a title that Microsoft is looking at as a system seller. The game shouldn’t have a hard time getting long-time fans back into the fold, but what about someone like me? Continue reading

Halo 5: Guardians Introduces Huge Missions, and Intimate Stories
by Mike Mahandy

Halo 5: Guardians asks a difficult question at its outset: is the Master Chief, Halo’s longtime protagonist and iconic leading man, really a good person?

“Hunt the Truth,” a fictional podcast series created as a prelude to Halo 5’s release, revealed skeletons from John 117’s past that call his true nature into question. Not only are there rumors about his mysterious upbringing, and involvement in a lethal incident with fellow soldiers–he’s also gone AWOL since Halo 4’s ending. Continue reading

Halo 5 Blue Team Opening Cinematic

H5G-Cinematic-Blue-Team-jpg

We’ve seen Fireteam Osiris jump into action. Now Blue team gets their own intro as well!

Okay, I will say, it was cool to finally hear Fred, Linda and Kelly voices. I do feel this intro was lacking by comparison to Osiris. Don’t know if that was intentional or not. Don’t get me wrong, we ALL know Blue team is bad are. This intro just didn’t feel as much to the Osiris vid.

I can’t wait to see them in action more though. More importantly, PLAY as them!!
